The devastating impact of a huge tsunami in the Indonesian city of Palu has been revealed in chilling aerial photographs – in a natural disaster estimated to have killed 832 people. The tsunami, which was triggered after a magnitude-7.5 earthquake, ripped through the Pacific Ring of Fire and crashed into the Palu at 500mph, causing widespread destruction. Indonesian media, citing the national disaster agency,
said Saturday that a further 540 people were injured in Palu City alone, on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi. Fears are mounting for the fishing town of Donggala, which was closer to the epicenter of the quake, but which rescuers have not been able to reach. The town of Mamuju was also severely affected but currently impossible to access due to damaged roads and disrupted telecommunications.

The ground has entered a strange liquid-like state in some areas of Indonesia due to the intense stress and shaking from an earthquake on Friday that caused the death of at least 832 people. The soil can be seen moving around like running water and even waves forming in what is known as liquefaction. Liquefaction happens when saturated soil loses its strength and stiffness in response to applied stress,
such as the shaking from an earthquake. Twitter users have described the phenomenon as “terrifying”. The earthquake also caused a tsunami that hit the island of Sulawesi, with waves as high as 6metres, according to the Indonesia Disaster Management Agency. Many homes, businesses and vehicles along the coast were washed away and damaged hospitals forced to shut down. Vice President Jusaf Kalla said the final death toll could be in the thousands. Hundreds have been killed on Indonesia’s Sulawesi island, which was struck by a 7.7-magnitude quake – triggering a tsunami that swept through two coastal towns. Scores of houses have been flattened, burying victims under rubble.
The disaster claimed the lives of some 384 people and left around 500 injured after the tsunami hit the coastline with 3-meter (10 foot) high waves, the spokesman of Indonesia’s National Disaster Mitigation Agency said on Saturday.

He added that the number of victims may further rise. The announced death toll only includes the data from Palu, but the casualties in nearby Donggala Regency are currently unknown.

Harrowing images have come from Indonesia, showing the scale of destruction that the Sulawesi quake inflicted on the towns of Palu and Donggala, located close to the epicenter of the quake that wrought havoc on the island on Friday afternoon.

Rescue efforts have been hampered by a power blackout that hit the affected towns, making it impossible for the authorities to estimate the real number of victims.

Dr. H. Wiranto, Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs, said on Friday evening that the authorities were still having difficulties with receiving feedback from the regions severely affected by the disaster. He said that the government might have to resort to the satellite communication provided by the National Disaster Mitigation Agency if power is not restored by Sunday morning.

The Palu airport has also been damaged, losing 500 meters of its 2,500-meter long runway. However, the authorities said the remaining length will be enough for Hercules cargo aircraft to land and bring essential supplies to the hard-hit.

The Ring of Fire, which stretches the length of the Pacific basin, has rumbled back in life with 19 quakes in the space of just 24 hours – and a scientist has said we can expect plenty more before the end of 2018.  Yesterday witnessed 19 tremors, including one 30 miles east-southeast of the Solomon Islands with a magnitude of 5.8, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported. Another measuring 5.5 was recorded 31 miles east-northeast of Fiji’s Ndoi Island.
Ben van der Pluijm, a geologist at the University of Michigan, told Express.co.uk: “On a yearly basis we have roughly 1500 magnitude 5-5.9 earthquakes around the world. “So far we are at roughly 1100 for 2018.” Mr van der Pluijm said it was important to keep recent events in context. He explained: “It’s worth remembering that one magnitude 6.5 earthquake releases the same amount of energy as 30 magnitude 5.5 earthquakes.

The Greek island of Crete was hit by two earthquakes in the space of four minutes, just days after a landslide injured seven people on the island of Zakynthos. Two earthquakes have struck off the coast of the Greek island of Crete, the US Geological Survey (USGS) said. The quakes measuring 4.5 and 4.4 in magnitude struck at around 6am BST (8am local time), just four minutes apart. The first 53km south-west of Tympakion and the other 55km from Tympakion.
Professor of Geology at the University of Athens, Efthimios Lekkas, said the two quakes hit at a depth of 10km. He said “the earthquake was felt in Messolonghi, Aegio and Zakynthos, where there is a possibility that the beach of Navajo was also affected.” Last week the authorities decided to shut down the beach of Navagio on the Greek island of Zakynthos, also known as Zante, after a landslide on September 13.

Katla, a giant volcano hidden beneath the ice cap of Mýrdalsjökull glacier, is busy filling its magma chambers. An eruption in Katla would dwarf the 2010 Eyjafjallajökull eruption. The volcano is long “overdue” for an eruption, as it has historically erupted once every 40-80 years. The last known eruption in Katla was in 1918.
A group of Icelandic and British geologists have recently finished a research mission studying gas emissions from the volcano. The studies showed that Katla is emitting enormous quantities of CO2. The volcano releases at least 20 kilotons of C02 every day. Only two volcanoes worldwide are known to emit more CO2.

Turkey has woken up to a 5.2 magnitude earthquake rocking the country this morning, around 92km from the popular tourist city of Antalya on the south coast of the country. On Wednesday morning, a powerful 5.1 magnitude earthquake struck the region at around 5.21am BST (7.21am).  The epicenter of the earthquake is said to have taken place 66 km south of popular resort Tekirova in the area of the town of Döşemealtı, Greater Antalya.
The quake struck around 93.9 km (58.4 mi) south-southeast of Greater Antalya. The quake was felt also in Cyprus, with local media reporting that people evacuated buildings as a precautionary measure. Initial reports from the US Geological Survey (USGS) state the depth of the quake is around 58.8km, with tremors felt in surrounding areas around the metropolitan area.

Hurricane Florence is quickly gaining strength in the Atlantic Ocean as it moves on a track for a direct strike on the East Coast. The National Hurricane Center predicts Florence will reach Category 4 status, and states of emergency have already been declared in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. After the Ministry of Civil Defence initially warned the Kermadec tremor could trigger a tsunami, officials quickly quashed that possibility.
In a tweet, the Ministry said: “There is no tsunami threat to New Zealand following the 6.8M earthquake SOUTH OF THE KERMADEC ISLANDS at 4.19pm. “ Seismologist John Ristau said: “People aren’t imagining that they felt anything, they did feel it. “They’re just feeling this large earthquake that’s a few hundred kilometers away, north of the North Island.”

A strong 6.4-magnitude earthquake shook the southern Philippines on Saturday (Sept 8), sending frightened residents fleeing from buildings, officials and eyewitnesses said. The quake struck off the coast of the southern town of Manay at about 3.16pm at a depth of 14km, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said in a statement.

A powerful earthquake triggered a landslide that engulfed houses on Japan’s northern island of Hokkaido early on Thursday (Sept 6), television footage showed, injuring and trapping dozens of people and cutting power to millions. A landslide along a long ridge in the rural town of Atsuma could be seen in aerial footage from public broadcaster NHK. At least 19 people were missing and 120 people were injured in Hokkaido after the magnitude 6.7 quake, it said.
There were no early reports of deaths but a man suffered cardiac arrest after falling down some stairs, Japanese media reported. “The shaking was vertical. It was sudden and strong,” one man in Sapporo told national broadcaster NHK. Another Sapporo resident said: “I was scared. Inside the shop I felt the tremor, which lasted for about 30 seconds… I was on the sixth floor, it was really scary.”

DEVELOPING: Two powerful earthquakes has rocked the northern Japanese city of Sapporo as a major typhoon has killed at least 10 people in the south of the country. The Magnitude 7 quake hit 112km south
of Sapporo on the island of Hokkaido, according to the US Geological Survey. The tremor struck at an approximate depth of just 10km. The second quake was registered at 6.7 and struck shortly after the first. No tsunami warnings have been issued following the tremor.

Large-scale disaster drills were held across Japan on Saturday, as Sept. 1 is designated Disaster Prevention Day in the nation. In a central government drill based on the scenario of a massive earthquake originating in the Nankai Trough off the Pacific coast, officials including Cabinet members gathered at the Prime Minister’s Office in Tokyo, arriving on foot. The Metropolitan Police Department and the Kanagawa prefectural police also held an exercise in preparation for an earthquake directly
beneath Tokyo. Part of National Highway Route 246, which connects Tokyo and Kanagawa Prefecture, was closed from a little past 9 a.m. for up to about 45 minutes. On the premise that an accident involving a large bus happened on a bridge on the closed route, the flow of ordinary cars was regulated and a special lane for emergency vehicles was established. People including the passengers were evacuated and the bus was towed away by a tow truck.

Greece has been struck by two earthquakes this morning, with witnesses describing the quakes as “extremely strong” – with tremors felt as far away as the tourist hotspot Greek islands. The first earthquake hit Greece at 8.12am BST, registering 5.1 magnitude. It struck near the town of Kardítsa, 144 miles from the capital of Greece. Just over an hour, later another strong earthquake hit the same region. It registered 4.4 magnitude.
Witnesses recorded their experiences on earthquake tracking website EMSC-CSEM. One said the earthquake “started with a 1-3 second roar and another 6-8 second of rumbling. Light fixtures swaying for at least 1-2 minutes afterward.” Another said: “I was sleeping and suddenly I felt a strong quake and woke up.” A third said the quake was “extremely strong”. A magnitude 4.4 earthquake centered in the San Gabriel Valley rattled a sizable chunk of Southern California Tuesday evening, the U.S. Geological Survey said. It struck at 7:33 p.m. about 2.5 miles north of La Verne at a depth of 3.79 miles, according to the agency. That depth — relatively shallow — is what

USGS reports the epicentre is 31 km (19 miles) west of the city of Javanrud.

Reports confirm the shake was also felt in Kurdistan.

Houshang Bazvand, the governor of Kermanshah, told state news agency IRNA that at least 90 people have been injured.

Local media reported at least one person has been killed.
