Russian woman indicted for role in conspiracy to influence 2018 elections

With a little over two weeks to go until the midterm elections, authorities are trying to get out ahead of the type of interference that occurred during the 2016 presidential election.

To this end, the Department of Justice (DOJ) indicted a Russian woman for being part of a conspiracy to influence the November 6 elections. The complaint was unsealed by intelligence officials on Friday.

The Allegations
In a clear attempt to take more proactive measures than those of 2016, the DOJ has charged 44-year-old Elena Khusyaynova with election interference. According to the criminal complaint, Khusyaynova is alleged to have sought to “defraud the United States by impairing, obstructing, and defeating the lawful functions of the U.S. Department of Justice and the Federal Election Commission in administering federal requirements for disclosure of foreign involvement in certain domestic activities.”

Khusyaynova is believed to be a financial overseer for “Project Lakhta,” a unified Russian effort to influence elections. The group carries out this mission by creating thousands of email and social media accounts targeting American hot-button issues, including gun rights, immigration, women’s rights, and the NFL national anthem protests.

“The Conspiracy has a strategic goal, which continues to this day, to sow division and discord in the U.S. political system, including by creating social and political polarization, undermining faith in democratic institutions, and influencing U.S. elections, including the upcoming 2018 midterm election,” authorities wrote in the complaint.

With more than $35 million in funding over the past two years, the project appears to be backed by businessman Yevgeny Prigozhin. Readers may better remember Prigozhin as “Putin’s chef,” so named because of his closeness with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Russia at it again
There is still an ongoing investigation being conducted by special counsel Robert Mueller centering around Russia’s interference in the 2016 presidential election. Thus far, Mueller has issued a number of indictments.

The first came in February, when 13 Russians and three Russian organizations were charged with fraud and conspiracy for using social media to interfere in the presidential election. This was linked to the Internet Research Agency, which is believed to be part of Project Lakhta.

Then, in July, Mueller charged 12 Russian military officers for hacking the Democratic National Committee prior to the 2016 election.

Despite this, Russia shows no signs of letting up. Worse still, others appear to be taking its lead.

Continuing and Expanding Threat
In a joint statement, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, Justice Department, FBI, and Department of Homeland Security wrote, “We are concerned about ongoing campaigns by Russia, China and other foreign actors, including Iran, to undermine confidence in democratic institutions and influence public sentiment and government policies. These activities also may seek to influence voter perceptions and decision making in the 2018 and 2020 U.S. elections.”

FBI Director Christopher Wray stated that this is a reminder that election interference is still a threat.

“This case serves as a stark reminder to all Americans,” he said. “Our foreign adversaries continue their efforts to interfere in our democracy by creating social and political division, spreading distrust in our political system, and advocating for the support or defeat of particular political candidates.”

“We take all threats to our democracy very seriously, and we’re committed to working with our partners to identify and stop these unlawful influence operations. Together, we must remain diligent and determined to protect our democratic institutions and maintain trust in our electoral process,” he continued.

Democrats have asked for violence… and now their supporters are acting on it.

Ronald Derisi allegedly threatened to kill two GOP senators for voting for Kavanaugh’s confirmation.

The Trail
Derisi thought he was being slick by buying a prepaid phone, but he still left a trail.

Rather than pay for the phone with cash, which would have made it all but impossible to track him down, the genius used his credit card to make the purchase.

With prepaid phone in hand, Derisi started calling senators and leaving threatening messages for them.

One of the voicemails released was more than a bit disturbing…

“We’re tired of this guy sucking taxpayers’ money! Getting a free f***ing ride!”

“How many more years you gonna do it? None! He’s a dead man! 9-millimeter, side of the f***ing head!

“If f***ing Kavanaugh gets in, he’s dead f***ing meat! Actually, even if Kavanaugh doesn’t get in he’s f***ing meat. 9-millimeter, side of the head, you f***ing old bastard.”

According to reports, the man left close to a dozen messages like this for the two senators.

While Derisi has been charged in both cases for threating to kill the senators, the names of the senators he threatened have not yet been released.

Insanity Continues
We, along with several other conservative outlets, have continuously warned that Democrat rhetoric would eventually create this exact scenario.

People like Maxine Waters cannot continuously tout violence against GOP officials without being held accountable.

The sad thing in all of this is the role the media has played in it.

There has been no public roasting of Maxine Waters, Hillary Clinton, or Eric Holder, all of whom have suggested violence as a way for the Democrat party to regain power.
