Gracious God

"The Lord is compassionate and gracious," Psalm 103:8a

Scripture Focus: Psalm 103

When you think of "God," what words come to mind? Are "compassionate" and "gracious" among them? Maybe. But perhaps like many people, you think of the words "angry" or "judgmental." You might read the Bible and wonder how anyone could love such a terrible, holy God. Looking at your own sin may have you wondering if God would ever forgive you.
The Bible presents God as compassionate and gracious. In Psalm 103, David recalled the words that the Lord spoke to Moses after Israel's idolatry with the golden calf: "The Lord, the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness" (Exodus 34:6). God judged some Israelites, but He also heard Moses' pleas and spared many. God renewed His covenant with His people and remained with them.
God never abandons His people. Neither will He abandon you. Do not let your sin stop you from coming to Him. Yes, the Lord is a judge, but He judged your sins on the cross so that right now He forgives you (1 John 1:9) and welcomes you into His glorious presence.

Insight: "For the LORD your God is gracious and compassionate. He will not turn his face from you if you return to him." (2 Chronicles 30:9b)
