Israel will host some 25,000 Ukrainian citizens until the danger in their home country passes, Israeli Interior Minister Ayelet Shaked said on Tuesday.

Under the plan, Israel will grant the approximately 20,000 Ukrainians already in the country, most illegally, temporary protection from repatriation, the Interior Ministry said in a statement. In addition, Israel will take in another 5,000 Ukrainian refugees.

“Initially, they will be given a temporary visa for three months. Should the fighting continue beyond this time, all those present in Israel will be allowed to work,” the statement said.

All Ukrainians are eligible and can apply through the Israeli Foreign Ministry. Applicants will be subject to a short background check.

Israeli citizens will also be able to apply to invite Ukrainian citizens, up to one nuclear family per applicant, according to the statement.

In addition, Israel expects to absorb some 100,000 Ukrainian refugees in the coming weeks and months within the framework of the country’s Law of Return, said Shaked.

“Ukrainians fleeing the war, both those who have a Jewish background and their family, will be able to come to Israel and receive full citizenship. Therefore, Israel is expected to be one of the world’s leading countries of destination and refuge for Ukrainian citizens fleeing the war, both in absolute numbers and certainly based on the country’s size,” the statement said.

In response to the announcement, Diaspora Affairs Minister Nachman Shai sent a letter to Cabinet Secretary Shalom Shlomo and asked that the issue of Israel’s refugee absorption policy be raised at the next cabinet meeting on Sunday.

“On the Polish-Ukrainian border I saw with my own eyes the endless stream of refugees leaving Ukraine,” Shai wrote. “It is a human tragedy of unimaginable proportions. Hundreds of thousands of families have fled. This is a humanitarian crisis of historic proportions. Israel must stand on the right side of history, and give these refugees shelter. A people whose history has included many years of being refugees is not now permitted to shut its eyes in the face of this current refugee crisis.”

The theory that US-run bio labs in Ukraine were developing COVID-related diseases as part of a plan by Dr. Anthony Fauci to release a new pandemic on the world was debunked by the mainstream media as “QAnon conspiracy theories” and “Russian disinformation.” But testimony by a US government official in front of Congress has revealed that at least part of this “conspiracy theory” is, in fact, true.

AN ADMISSION OF GUILT
On Tuesday, the US government admitted to running the labs when the Undersecretary of State for Political Affairs Victoria Nuland testified before a Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing on Ukraine in Washington, DC, and said that the United States was working with Ukraine to prevent invading Russian forces from seizing biological research material. 

“Ukraine has biological research facilities, which we are now quite concerned Russian troops, Russian forces, may be seeking to gain control of,” she stated to the US lawmakers on March 8. “We are working with the Ukrainians on how they can prevent any of those research materials from falling into the hands of Russian forces should they approach,” 

ACCUSATIONS OF BIOLOGICAL WARFARE BEFORE IT OCCURS
Despite the admission that the US was running the labs in Ukraine, Sen. Marco Rubio asked Nuland if the Russians would more probably be responsible should a biological or chemical weapon attack occur inside Ukraine. Nuland responded, “There is no doubt in my mind, Senator.” 

Western media had labeled this claim made by Russia and China as Russian disinformation. Politifact and Snopes fact-checkers labeled the claim as false, stating, “There are no U.S.-run biological weapons labs operating in Ukraine.” Twitter suspended accounts for posting this claim. Politifact went further, citing an “expert” as claiming that this was part of a long-running disinformation program of “spreading the false claim that the U.S. has Biolabs along each of their borders, insinuating that America is responsible for unleashing COVID-19.”

CURES, NOT DISEASES
“While the U.S. may provide funding to upgrade or build labs in other countries, the labs are run by the partnering nations, and the program’s goal is to prevent biological threats, not create them,” Politifact concluded. “We rate this claim False.”

USA Today fact-checkers also labeled it as ‘false,’ citing Politifact as an “independent fact-checking source.”

The prestigious Foreign Policy site described it as a “discredited QAnon conspiracy theory.” The article called for the claim of US bio labs in Ukraine to be removed from the internet by “regulated social media networks” as it appeared on “unregulated platforms such as Telegram and 8Chan.”  According to Foreign Policy, the theory of labs in Ukraine was based on Russia’s intention to “destroy bioweapon-manufacturing labs to prevent the American infectious disease expert Anthony Fauci from creating a sequel to the COVID-19 virus.”

PATHOGENS AND TOXINS OF SECURITY CONCERN
It should be noted that the website of the US Embassy in Ukraine describes the “Biological Threat Reduction Program” run by the Department of Defense in conjunction with the Ukrainian Department of Defense. The program runs an unspecified number of laboratories to handle “pathogens and toxins of security concern.”

The website stated that the lab in Ukraine was involved in “Risk Assessment of Selected Avian EDPs Potentially Carried by Migratory Birds over Ukraine.” Coronavirus and severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) are avian viruses. The lab also researched the Crimean Congo hemorrhagic fever virus, closely associated with COVID-19.

Last week, the Russian Defense Ministry claimed that there was “evidence of a US-financed military biological program developed in Ukraine.” Moscow said the lab was “revealed during Russia’s special operation in that country.”

Israel’s defense minister said on Monday that the time to act on Iran was now, before the ayatollahs’ regime was protected by a “nuclear canopy.”

“The world must mobilize to stop Iranian aggression,” said Benny Gantz in a post on social media, a day after Israel announced that the Israel Defense Forces had intercepted Iranian drones en route from Iran to Gaza last year.

Whether or not a new nuclear agreement is signed in Vienna between Iran and world powers, said Gantz, “it will not be the end of the road for us—nor should it be for the countries of the region and the world, which must continue to act against Iranian aggression.”

The State of Israel and its defense establishment would take all necessary measures, “political, economic and if needed, also military,” in order to defend our sovereignty and ensure the security of the citizens of Israel.”

Iran’s aggression, said Gantz, “whether it emanates from Iranian territory or through Iranian proxies, is a threat to global peace and to regional stability, as well as a threat to the State of Israel.”

It is now, while a nuclear agreement is being negotiated in Vienna, he continued, that we must remember: “If Iran reaches the nuclear threshold, it will become even more dangerous to world peace. Now is the time for the world to mobilize to stop it. As I have said in the past, the State of Israel will take all the measures necessary to prevent Iran from becoming an existential threat.”

Could a Purim Iran deal turn the world around? Upon looking at the recent developments of the soon-to-be signed Iran Nuclear deal, a Purim-like miracle could occur with modern-day Persia and their plot to annihilate the nation of Israel.

FIVE PERMANENT MEMBER NATIONS
In the bizarre reality of international politics, Russia is acting as a major party in the ongoing negotiations in Vienna by the Biden administration focused on reviving the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) known as the Iran nuclear deal. The P5+1 signed the agreement, that is, the five permanent member nations of the UN Security Council (China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States) plus Germany.

President Donald Trump withdrew the United States from the JCPOA in 2018.

AN AVALANCHE OF AGGRESSIVE SANCTIONS
After 11 months of negotiations that seemed to be leading to a resolution, Russia created an impasse on Saturday when Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov interjected, saying that the Western sanctions over the invasion of Ukraine had become a stumbling block for the nuclear deal. Lavrov cited the “avalanche of aggressive sanctions that the West has started spewing out, which hasn’t ended as far as I understand,” over the Ukraine conflict.

“We requested that our US colleagues… give us written guarantees at the minimum level of Secretary of State that the current [sanctions] process launched by the US will not in any way harm our right to free, fully-fledged trade and economic and investment cooperation and military-technical cooperation with Iran,” Lavrov said at a news conference.

A POWERFUL TOOL SERVING BOTH COUNTRIES
Both Iran and Russia are significant oil producers, and cooperation will undoubtedly be a powerful tool serving both countries. Conversely, western nations, including the US, are interested in removing sanctions against Iran to replace Russian oil sources that are proscribed due to sanctions against Russia. A successful deal would bring significant volumes of Iranian oil back to global energy markets in the months ahead.

Secretary of State Anthony Blinken disagreed, attempting to keep the war in Ukraine separate from the Iran deal.

A RUSSIAN-AMERICAN INTEREST
“These things are totally different and just are not, in any way, linked together. So I think that’s irrelevant,” Blinken said in an interview with CBS’s “Face the Nation” show. Blinken added that it was not only in America’s interest but Russia’s as well that Iran not be able “to have a nuclear weapon or the capacity to produce a weapon on very, very short order.”

Iran followed Russia’s lead, telling the US negotiators that they consulted with the Russian government. Russia wanted a written U.S. guarantee that Russia’s trade, investment, and military-technical cooperation with Iran would not be hindered in any way by the sanctions.



WHAT MOSCOW WANTS
“It is necessary to understand clearly what Moscow wants. If what they demand is related to the JCPOA, it would not be difficult to find a solution for it,” said an Iranian official. “But it will be complicated if the guarantees that Moscow has demanded are beyond the JCPOA.”

Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei has made public calls for closer ties with Russia. Russia’s Invasion of Ukraine was preceded by a visit from Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi to Vladimir Putin in Moscow, the first of its type in five years.

Russia is a significant trade partner for Iran, especially regarding Iran’s excess oil reserves. Iran is the only country in Western Asia invited to join the Collective Security Treaty Organization, Russia’s international treaty organization, in response to NATO. While much of the Iranian military uses Iranian-manufactured weapons and domestic hardware, Iran still purchases some weapons systems from Russia. In turn, Iran has helped Russia with its drone technology and other military technology. Also, due to the regional aspirations of Turkey, a NATO partner, Iran is strengthening its ties with China.

PURIM COMING UP
Rabbi Hillel Weiss, the former spokesman for the Sanhedrin, noted that negotiations for the Iran deal have been in the works for quite some time. Before the invasion of Ukraine, diplomats had announced that it was about to be signed. Nonetheless, it was not signed, and the holiday of Purim is around the corner (March 16-17).

“It is not by chance that after all this time, the signing, or rejection, of the Iran deal is going to happen on Purim,” Rabbi Weiss said. 

The rabbi then referred to a verse from the Book of Esther:

The reference to “the opposite happened” is understood to be a central theme of the holiday. The day that Haman established as the destruction of the Jews turned out to be a day of celebration and salvation.

Rabbi Yekutiel Fish, a prominent Jerusalem mystic, stated unequivocally that the current war in Ukraine is the precursor to the pre-Messiah War of Gog and Magog. The rabbi citedthe Midrash in Bereishis Rabbah (לך לך מ”ב, ד) which states:

Rabbi Elazar bar Avinah said, ‘If you see kingdoms taunting each other, you can anticipate the footsteps of the Messiah.” The Midrash bases this on the age of Abraham in which kings were battling each other which culminated in Abraham’s “redemption”.

“In the end of days, the nations that hate Israel will be poised to fight each other,” Rabbi Fish explained. “This is certainly the case with Russia and Ukraine, both of which have a long history of hating Jews. But the nations that hate Israel will realize that fighting among themselves will, in the end, be good for Israel. So they will get together to settle their differences so they will not fight each other but will, instead continue to kill the Jews, as they have always done. But this will not succeed. This will, of course, be due to God intervening and preventing them from harming Israel.”

“Choosing between Russia and Ukraine is difficult,” Rabbi Fish said. “Both have a long history of oppressing Jews. But in this specific case, Russia is the aggressor, transgressing the Biblical prohibition against murder. Of course, God directs the events and whether or not there will be war. But man chooses how he fits into that plan.”

“I don’t think we are in the first stages of Gog and Magog,” Rabbi Fish said. “I KNOW  we are in the first stages of Gog and Magog. But Gog and Magog will be focused on Jerusalem. World War Three will precede Gog and Magog and this is what we are seeing right now, just as WWI and WWII were parts of Gog and Magog.”

Rabbi Chaim Kanievsky, one of the most prominent rabbis of this generation, was asked about the conflict in Ukraine. His answer was unequivocal; the final redemption is imminent.

Is Ukraine the innocent victim in its conflict with Russia? The answer isn’t so simple.

That’s because casualties reported by mainstream media due to a Russian offensive were later discovered to be perpetrated by Ukrainian forces themselves.
One such example was the execution of Israeli national Roman Brodsky, 37, who was shot and killed while trying to escape the country. The media initially blamed Russia, but as it turns out, it was carried out by Ukrainian troops.
So does the Ukrainian government have a hidden agenda that the West refuses to discuss?
One Ukrainian official may have just revealed that this is precisely the case.
Ukrainian Parliament member Kira Rudik spoke with Fox News last week, Calling for a “New World order.”
When asked if she was surprised by the Ukrainian people’s will to fight, Rudik responded by saying that now is a “critical time because we fight for this New World Order.”
The ‘new world order is often associated with a covert globalist agenda to erse sovereignty and bring about a one-world government. This political ideology would be consistent with Ukraine’s desire to join the European Union, which Russia vehemently opposes.

That’s because the EU is known to be the driving force behind open borders in Europe and delineating state sovereignty. It can also explain why the entire western world had united against Russia over its invasion while remaining silent when other western countries invaded sovereign states, like when the US invaded Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2003.

A Russian strike on a TV tower in Kyiv on Tuesday afternoon has also damaged the Babi Yar Holocaust memorial site, according to Ukrainian authorities.

“Russia has launched a missile attack on the territory where the Babyn Yar memorial complex is located. These villains are killing Holocaust victims for the second time,” Andriy Yermak, chairman of the Ukrainian Presidential Office, said on Twitter.


Natan Sharansky, chair of the advisory board of the Babyn Yar Holocaust Memorial Center, confirmed the damage.

“[That] Putin seeks to distort and manipulate the Holocaust to justify an illegal invasion of a sovereign democratic country is utterly abhorrent. It is symbolic that he starts attacking Kyiv by bombing the site of the Babyn Yar, the biggest of Nazi massacre[s],” Sharansky wrote.

On Twitter, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky lamented the irony of the memorial being hit.

“What is the point of saying ‘never again’ for 80 years, if the world stays silent when a bomb drops on the same site of Babyn Yar?” he wrote.

He added that “at least 5 killed. History repeating…”

Israel’s Foreign Minister Yair Lapid strongly condemned the attack on the Babi Yar site.

“We condemn the attack on the Jewish cemetery near the memorial site commemorating the Holocaust of the Jews of Kyiv and the murder of the Jewish people in Babi Yar. We call for preserving and respecting the sanctity of the site,” Lapid wrote.

Yad Vashem also “vehemently condemned” the strike by Russian forces and urged the international community to take action, stating, “We call on the international community to take concerted measures to safeguard civilian lives as well as these historical sites because of their irreplaceable value for research, education and commemoration of the Holocaust. Rather than being subjected to blatant violence, sacred sites like Babi Yar must be protected.”

The Babi Yar Holocaust memorial sits on top of a mass grave containing some 34,000 Jews who were murdered there in 1941 by the Nazis and their collaborators during their occupation. Last year, plans were unveiled to erect a new memorial center on the site to commemorate the atrocity.

Separately, on Tuesday, the Babyn Yar Holocaust Memorial Center also asked the International Criminal Court to speak out against Russian President Vladimir Putin’s false claims of genocide as a pretext for war.

“If President Putin wants to denounce genocide, he should reach out to those in the system of international justice, not begin a war against the people of Ukraine under false pretenses,” the center said in a statement.

Reports of Russia recruiting Syrians and Chechnyans to their war in Ukraine have Gog and Magog war implications, according to one rabbi who says that Esau embodied by Russia among other nations will unite at the end of days with Ishmael, represented by the Muslim world.

Many Palestinians studied at Soviet universities, including PA President Mahmoud Abbas., the leaders are fearful of antagonizing either superpower. 
Nonetheless, the PA has remained silent on the issue of Ukraine.

Israel Offers to Broker Peace Between Russia, Ukraine
Israel, which has long maintained warm relations with both countries, has found itself walking a diplomatic tightrope in recent days between expressing support for Ukraine, while not outright condemning Russia’s actions. The Kremlin says that Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett has offered to broker an end to fighting between Russia and Ukraine.

In a call on Sunday between Bennett and Russian President Vladimir Putin, the Russian government said that Bennett said that Israel is ready to play mediator, the Associated Press reported. However, the report did not indicate whether the Russian leader accepted the offer.
However, a readout from the Israeli Prime Minister’s Office about the call did not mention any offer by Bennett to mediate peace.
“The two discussed the situation between Russia and Ukraine,” the Israeli readout said.
On Sunday it was announced that Ukrainian and Russian peace negotiators agreed to meet near the border between Ukraine and Belarus. Despite the tentative talks, there has been no immediate ceasefire declaration as Russian forces continue to lay siege on the country.

Israel Defies Washington; Refuses to Provide Missile System to Ukraine
Israel stopped the US from transferring several batteries of the Iron Dome missile defense system to Ukraine due to concerns that it would damage Jerusalem’s relations with Russia, the Ynet news site reported on Tuesday.
According to the report, the Iron Dome’s capabilities — especially during the 2021 Gaza war — intrigued Ukrainian defense officials.
Representatives of Ukraine lobbied aggressively in Washington to convince US members of Congress to transfer the rocket and mortar defense system to them last year.
Kyiv officially requested the Biden administration to transfer both Patriot and Iron Dome systems to Ukraine in the spring of 2021.
There were no fears of a potential war with Russia during that time. This could be why both Democratic and Republican lawmakers backed the transfer.

In a recent blog post, billionaire currency manipulator and political activist George Soros seemed to draw parallels between the Nazis and the modern Russian military. He compared the current Russian invasion to the 1944 siege of Nazi-held Budapest by the Soviet army.
In the post published on his blog on Saturday, Soros called to “stand with Ukraine, as they stand with us.” He then compared Russia’s invasion of Ukraine to the siege of Budapest, then a Nazi-occupied city, by the Soviet forces. During the war, Soros served as a Nazi collaborator in Budapest, Hungary.
“Brave Ukrainians are now on the frontline and risking their lives in an onslaught that reminds me of the siege of Budapest in 1944 and the siege of Sarajevo in 1993,” the tycoon wrote.
This quote implies that Soros is comparing the Ukrainian troops to the Nazis who were inside occupied Budapest and the Russian troops of today to the Russian troops of 1944 who were fighting against the Nazis.
The statement was also seen on Soros’s Twitter account but was removed after users pointed out the contradiction. The blog post is still accessible on Soros’ website.

What Israel Must Learn from Ukraine’s War

Israelis recognize that no outside power, not even the U.S., can be relied on to guarantee survival in the face of a powerful threat. The first lesson to be learned (or relearned) from Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is that the absence of deterrence can be fatal for any nation. The bravery and determination displayed by the leaders and citizens of Ukraine are impressive, but have not prevented Putin’s onslaught. In the West—mainly the United States and NATO—good intentions and strong words of support notwithstanding, the lack of a credible deterrent to dissuade Putin was clearly evident, including to the Kremlin.


Deterrence of a powerful and determined opponent is inherently complex and uncertain. During the Cold War, strategists agonized over the best means of preventing Moscow from challenging and weakening American power and the NATO alliance, including MAD—mutual assured destruction. But when the Soviet state collapsed, and the end of history was declared, deterrence was largely forgotten, allowing Putin to build up his forces without interference. By the time the United States and NATO woke up to the threat, Russia had full control.
For Israel, the events in Ukraine are an important reality check.

[ICYMI] Ukrainian Jews, Christians Unite in Prayer for Peace
On Sunday, Rabbi Bleich tweeted that Ukraine’s Jewish President, Volodymyr Zelensky, called him and requested that the Jews of the country pray for the safety of all Ukrainians.The Chief Rabbi of Ukraine, Rabbi Yaakov Dov Bleich, invited Christians and Jews to join in prayer for his country. 
“The Chief Rabbi unexpectedly invited all us Christians and all Ukrainians to read Psalm 31 during these difficult times,” says Anatoliy Raychynets, the Deputy General Secretary for the Bible Society in Ukraine.
“For me, as a pastor, that Psalm … well, I read it differently now, because it’s about our current situation in Ukraine. This ancient prayer – written several thousand years ago – now we see is so alive, is living.”

As Russia pummels Ukraine in an invasion waged on Thursday, Moscow’s Deputy Ambassador to the UN, Dmitry Polyanskiy, leveled the same type of sentiment at Israel as the Kremlin did towards Ukraine.

“We’re concerned over Tel Aviv’s announced plans for expanding settlement activity in the occupied Golan Heights, which contradicts the provisions of the 1949 Geneva Convention. Russia doesn’t recognize Israel’s sovereignty over Golan Heights that are part of Syria,” he tweeted.


Putin refused to recognize republics Donetsk and Luhansk as sovereign Ukraine like the Golan.

Interestingly,  Polyanskiy referred to Israel’s capital as Tel Aviv rather than Jerusalem.

Russia has boosted Syria’s President Bashar Assad in Syria’s decade-long civil war. Many speculate that Russia’s latest comments regarding Israel respond to Israeli Foreign Minister Yair Lapid, who seemed to side with Ukraine after announcing that Israel will follow suit if Washington enacts sanctions against Moscow.

If Russia, whose troops are embedded throughout Syria, invades Israel in the bordering Golan Heights, it could fulfill a Rabbinic prophecy covered by Israel365 News.

A RABBINIC PROPHECY
Rabbi Yitzchak Dovid Grossman, the scion of one of the most respected Hassidic families in Jerusalem, related a story from his childhood. A prophecy was discussed by his father and another rabbi concerning the outcome of the current crisis in Ukraine.

Rabbi Grossman describes how he used to sit by his father, Rabbi Yisrael Grossman, the head of the Agudath Yisrael rabbinic court, and learn Torah in the synagogue.

“When they wanted to honor someone in the synagogue, they would allow them to sit next to my father,” Rabbi Grossman related. “One day, a man sat down next to my father. My father treated him with great respect, but I didn’t know who it was because I was very young at the time. He began to tell my father a story that he listened to with great interest. It seemed so exceptional that I remember it to this day.”

“The man related what he heard when he was with the ‘Yanuka’ in Stolin (Belarus) many years earlier,” Rabbi Grossman said. The ‘Yanuka’ was Rabbi Yisrael of Stolin. He was the son of Rabbi Asher, the spiritual leader of the Stolin branch of Hassidic Judaism. The Yanuka was born in 1869, and his father passed away when he was just four and a half years old. His piety and Torah knowledge were already so remarkable that at that young age, he was appointed as the sect’s spiritual leader in his father’s place until he passed away in 1922.

Rabbi Grossman related how the Yanuka once gathered his followers together for a special message.

“The Yanuka told his followers what would be before the arrival of the Messiah,” Rabbi Grossman related. “Two roosters will be fighting terribly, trying to kill each other, when along will come a third rooster who will finish them both off.”

The story finished with an unpredictable ending.

“But Israel, thanks to their great belief in God, will be spared from danger,” Rabbi Grossman said.

Rabbi Grossman’s father was confused after he heard the story.

“What are you talking about?” his father asked at the time. “What is all this talk about, roosters?”

The mysterious stranger answered in the name of the Yanuka, who passed away more than two decades before Rabbi Grossman was born. “The two roosters are Russia and America. Who is the third rooster that will finish off both the US and Russia? That will be China,” the Yanuka said more than 170 years ago.

“At the time, China was like a kindergarten,” Rabbi Grossman said. “They were a huge country but backward in culture and technology and had a military that had no real weapons. Who could have imagined that China would one day be the biggest threat in the world?”

“The vision of righteous men is almost like prophecy and can foresee things regular men cannot,” Rabbi Grossman said. “God should protect us from what the Chinese leaders have in mind.  We are already beginning to see all that was prophesied to be before the Messiah. We are currently in the final stages of the Moshiach (Messiah).”

“The only solution at this stage is to increase in prayer and belief in God, to engage in charity, and to do God’s will,” Rabbi Grossman said. “We are about to see that God is One and His name is One.”

Rabbi Grossman is the sixth generation of his family residing in Jerusalem. He is universally respected and has been offered the position of Chief Rabbi of Israel twice but declined both times to continue his outreach work.

PUTIN’S PERSONAL JEWISH CONNECTION; A RAY OF HOPE FOR THE JEWS IN UKRAINE

As the Russian military invades Ukraine, many people are deeply worried over what this means for the tens of thousands of Jews who may come under his rule. Though Putin is undoubtedly the aggressor in this conflict, attacking ruthlessly to absorb Ukraine, once the dust settles, there is reason to believe his government will not be oppressively anti-Semitic.

It should first be noted that anti-Semitism has long been an issue in Ukraine.  A third of the Jews of Europe previously lived in Ukraine between 1791 and 1917, within the Pale of Settlement. The large concentration of Jews in this region historically made them an easy target for anti-Jewish actions and pogroms. This culminated in the Holocaust. Many historians argue that the destruction of the Jewish population of Ukraine, reduced from 870,000 to 17,000, could not have been accomplished without the aid of the local population, because the Germans lacked the manpower to reach all of the communities that were annihilated, especially in the remote villages. Anti-Semitism is still a powerful social phenomenon but is considered a “household” issue and not systemic.

In November, Russia played the anti-semitic card when Deputy Chairman of the Security Council, Dmitry Medvedev, published an article aimed at Ukraine and its Jewish President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. In the article, Medvedev accused Zelensky of repudiating his Jewish identity to serve rabid nationalists. The Russian diplomat compared the Ukrainian president to the Sonderkommando, Jews who were forced by the Nazis to work in the death camps, disposing of the bodies of their brethren.

Nazi references have been thrown in both directions. In a televised address Thursday, Zelensky compared Putin’s invasion of Ukraine to to Hitler’s invasions that sparked World War II.

As a former lieutenant colonel in the KGB, Putin is undoubtedly ruthless. But he is not known to be personally anti-Semitic. In fact, the opposite seems to be the case. At the International Assembly of Chabad Representatives in 2007, Russia’s Chief Rabbi, Rabbi Berel Lazar, often referred to as “Putin’s Rabbi”, told a remarkable story about the Russian leader, which he heard from Putin himself.

“When he was a young child, he grew up in a very poor family. His parents were always out at work. He was fortunate that the next-door neighbor was a Hasidic Jewish family, and they always made sure to invite him over,” Lazar explained. “They were extremely kind to him, and he realized that not only were they kind to a child that wasn’t theirs, not only were they kind to a child that wasn’t Jewish, but they were kind to a child in a time and place when it was dangerous to do that.”

“Thirty years later, because of the gratitude he felt for that family, and for the respect he felt for the Jewish people as a whole, as deputy mayor of the city of Leningrad, he granted official permission to open the first Jewish school in the city.”

The family in Lazar’s story was that of Anatoly Rakhlin, Putin’s high-school wrestling coach, a man he considered to be a father figure and at whose funeral he cried. Putin described the family in his autobiography, First Person.

“(They were) observant Jews who did not work on Saturdays, and the man would study the Bible and Talmud all day long,” he wrote. “Once I even asked him what he was muttering. He explained to me what this book was and I was immediately interested.”

Putin’s Jewish connection was not an anomaly limited to his childhood memories. In 2005, when Putin made an official visit to Israel, he visited his high-school teacher, Mina Yuditskaya Berliner, who lived in Tel Aviv. He even bought her an apartment in the city when he heard she was living in poor conditions.

Arkadi and Boris Rotenberg were his judo sparring partners under Coach Rakhlin, and remain his close friends to this day. The Rotenbergs are billionaire contractors, and the relationship is mutually beneficial, with the Rotenberg brothers getting government contracts worth many billions of dollars.


In fact, Putin has surrounded himself with rich and successful Jews, such as Moshe Kantor (net worth $2.3 billion), Lev Leviev (net worth $1.5 billion), Roman Abramovich (net worth $9.1 billion) and Victor Vekselberg (net worth $13.6 billion). They are all close friends and confidantes of the Russian president, and they are all quite openly Jewish.

On the Jewish New Year, Putin sent a holiday greeting to Rabbi Lazar, wishing the Russian Jewish community a “sweet and happy New Year.”

“For centuries, Jewish values inspired lofty ideals,” Putin wrote. He said that these values enhanced “relations among different peoples…through charity and education, all in the interest of the public good.” In a direct manner, he pledged “fierce opposition to any manifestation of anti-Semitism and xenophobia.”

Putin puts his money where his mouth is and donated a month of his salary as president to the Jewish Museum in Moscow. His name is proudly listed on the museum wall as a donor.

Perhaps due to his connection with Jews on a personal level, Putin can be said to view Russian Jews as first and foremost good Russian citizens. This has already had international repercussions. When Putin met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in September to discuss the developing situation in Syria, the meeting produced positive results, with Putin expressing his strong connection with Israel.

“We never forget that in the State of Israel reside many former Soviet citizens, and that has a special implication on the relationship between our two states,” Putin stated. “Every Russian action in the area has always been very responsible. We are aware of the artillery against Israel and we condemn it. “

In 2011, at the  Euro-Asian Jewish Congress in Moscow, Putin said, “Israel is, in fact, a special state to us. It is practically a Russian-speaking country. Israel is one of the few foreign countries that can be called Russian-speaking. It’s apparent that more than half of the population speaks Russian.”

In 2014, Putin was one of the few political leaders who supported Israel’s Operation Protective Edge, saying at a meeting with representatives of the Rabbinical Center of Europe to fight anti-Semitism and xenophobia, “I support Israel’s battle that is intended to keep its citizens protected.”

Perhaps even more surprising is a clue that Putin may favor building the Third Temple. During his third official trip to Jerusalem in 2012, Putin paid a late-night visit to the Kotel (Western Wall). When he arrived at the holy site, the Russian leader stood in silence for several minutes, offering up a personal prayer, after which he read Psalms from a Russian-Hebrew prayer book.

An Israeli bystander called out in Russian, “Welcome, President Putin.” Putin approached the man, who explained the importance of the Temple Mount and the Jewish Temple. Chadrei Charedim, an Orthodox Hebrew news site, reported that Putin responded, “That’s exactly the reason I came here – to pray for the Temple to be built again.”

After this remarkable exchange, the Sanhedrin sent a letter to Putin calling on him to fulfill his prayer. At the time, President Putin did not respond to the Sanhedrin’s request.

The invasion of Ukraine puts Israel in a difficult position. As a close ally of the US, Israel would like to follow its lead if President Biden chooses to sanction or actively confront Russia. At the same time, Russia has a strong military presence in Syria with a naval and airbase. Until now, Russia has given its tacit agreement, turning a blind eye to Israeli airstrikes targeting Iranian military assets in Syria despite having advanced S-300 and S-400 anti-air systems in place. In response to Israel’s expressions of support for Ukraine, Russia denounced Israel’s sovereignty over the Golan Heights at a meeting of the U.N. Security Council.

Following months of Russian troops massing on the Ukrainian border and Kyiv approving a national state of emergency, Putin finally pulled the trigger and launched an armed invasion of Ukraine. According to one well-known rabbi, Russia is ‘Gog’ as described in the Book of Ezekiel.

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS
Following the decision to invade, the Kremlin evacuated its Kyiv embassy. US president Joe Biden approved sanctions to move forward against the company that built the Russia-to-Germany Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline and against the company’s CEO.

On Thursday, Russia waged an assault on Ukraine, as Putin called on Ukrainian “comrades” to lay down their weapons.

Russian security officials announced that they had successfully attacked Ukraine’s air defense systems following that announcement. Neutralizing the infrastructure of Ukrainian Air Force bases as smoke can be seen billowing from a Ukrainian military airport in Chuguev. Ukraine also reported that enemy Russian forces have completed seized control of two villages in the country’s east as underground subways have been converted into bomb shelters.

EVACUATING THE JEWS
The Israel365 organization has embarked on a daring mission to rescue Jewish Ukrainians from all-out war and return them safely to Jerusalem.

Despite having a majority of Jews, these Jews were eventually expelled in the beginning of Israel’s 1948 war for independence by local Arabs and Jordanians with tacit approval by British troops.

After the war, Arabs came and squatted in the properties. Now Israel’s Supreme Court has ruled that the Squatters must leave or owe the landlords money.

The violent protests by the Arabs and Jewish leftists are in protest over the removal of illegal squatters and land thieves. Despite the fact that the Arab squatters have lost every court case, the protests and riots continue.

Approximately 15 Russian officers and military personnel appeared in the small town of Lyubavichi in western Russia. The town lacks paved roads, electricity, and other amenities, but it was reported in ColLive that the Russian soldiers came to the small town to pray at the gravesides of rabbis buried in the ancient Jewish cemetery.

The city was the birthplace of Chabad Lubavitch Hassidut, one of the largest sects of Judaism. Founded about 500 years ago, the name of the city means (appropriately enough) ‘brotherly love’. It was the seat of four generations of Chabad ‘Rebbes’ (spiritual leaders) between 1813 and 1915. The second Chabad Rebbe, Dovber Schneuri (1773–1827), moved from Lyady to Lyubavichi in 1813. The third Rebbe of Chabad, Menachem Mendel Schneersohn (1789–1866), and the fourth Rebbe, Shmuel Schneersohn (1834–1882) are buried in Lyubavichi.

The group included Jason Nadjafov Radjaf who was awarded the auspicious title of  “Russian Hero” by President Vladimir Putin, General Alexander Ilitz Sabaleir who was awarded a “Red Star” medal, “Hero of the Red Star Order” Colonel Alexander Ibnovitch, and the head of the paratroopers union of the Smolensk region, Alexander Lukin.

They reportedly came to pray “for peace between the countries in the region” and “to prevent a war.” They told the surprised Jews present that they had travelled to the remote site after hearing that prayers offered at the gravesides of the holy rabbis were answered. 

Their visit commemorated the  33rd anniversary of the Russian withdrawal from Afghanistan. It is believed they all participated in that war which has been dubbed the “Soviet Union’s Vietnam” due to its grinding failure and demoralizing effect on the military. The Soviets’ failure in the war is thought to be a contributing factor to the fall of the Soviet Union.

While in the small town, they visited the memorial to the Jews of Lyubavichi who were killed in the Holocaust. The town currently has 200 inhabitants, none of whom are Jewish. 

Chabad set up a visitors’ center in the small town and an estimated 10,000 people visited the center before the pandemic. Rabbi Gavriel Gordon who oversees the center explained to ColLive the phenomenon of non-Jewish supplicants at the rabbis’ gravesides:

“In recent years, the town Lubavitch has become a place where thousands come each month to Daven (pray),” Rabbi Gordon said. “Most are Jewish, but almost every day I meet non-Jewish people who heard about the place. People flock here from across Russia, and everyone is happily welcomed. I believe that the prayers of the senior officers will be accepted, and perhaps a war will be averted.”

Praying at the gravesides of holy rabbis is a Hassidic tradition. Just as these generals prayed at the graveside of rabbinic leaders of the Chabad branch of Hassidut in Lyubavichi from 160 years ago, Ivanka Trump prayed at the graveside of the last Chabad “rebbe”, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, in New York before both elections her father ran in. The first prayer visit in 2016 was clearly successful as President Trump won an upset victory over Hillary Clinton. The second prayer visit in 2020 at the Chabad “rebbe’s” graveside was not as successful as the president lost his campaign effort. The gravesite,  known as the “Ohel”, is located in the Old Montefiore Cemetery in Queens, New York. Thousands of Jews and non-Jews visit his grave site every year to pray for blessings in the merit of the rebbe’s  righteous memory

A prophetic allegory first told 170 years ago has resurfaced, related by one of the most respected rabbis in Israel who heard it many years ago when he was a boy sitting with his father. The rabbi explains that the story, first told by a wonder-working Hassidic leader, foretold a conflict between Russia and the US, but in the end, China would emerge victoriously.

A video was recently posted to the internet in which Rabbi Yitzchak Dovid Grossman, the scion of one of the most respected Hassidic families in Jerusalem, related a story from his childhood in which a prophecy was discussed by his father and another rabbi concerning the outcome of the current crisis in Ukraine.

Rabbi Grossman begins by describing how he used to sit by his father, Rabbi Yisrael Grossman, the head of the Agudath Yisrael rabbinic court, and learn Torah in the synagogue.

“When they wanted to honor someone in the synagogue, they would allow them to sit next to my father,” Rabbi Grossman related. “One day, a man sat down next to my father. My father treated him with great respect but I didn’t know who it was because I was very young at the time. He began to tell my father a story that he listened to with great interest. It seemed so exceptional that I remember it to this day.”

“The man related what he heard when he was with the ‘Yanuka’ in Stolin (Belarus) many years earlier,” Rabbi Grossman said. The ‘Yanuka’ was Rabbi Yisrael of Stolin. He was the son of Rabbi Asher, the spiritual leader of the Stolin branch of Hassidic Judaism. The Yanuka was born in 1869 and his father passed away when he was just four and a half years old. His piety and Torah knowledge were already so remarkable that at that young age, he was appointed as the sect’s spiritual leader in his father’s place, until he passed away in 1922. 

Rabbi Grossman related how the Yanuka once gathered his followers together for a special message.

“The Yanuka told his followers what would be before the arrival of the Messiah,” Rabbi Grossman related. “Two roosters will be fighting terribly, trying to kill each other, when along will come a third rooster who will finish them both off.”

The story finished with an incongruous ending. 

“But Israel, thanks to their great belief in God, will be spared from danger,” Rabbi Grossman said.

Rabbi Grossman’s father was confused after he heard the story.

“What are you talking about?” his father asked at the time. “What is all this talk about roosters?”

The mysterious stranger answered in the name of the Yanuka, who passed away more than two decades before Rabbi Grossman was born. “The two roosters are Russia and America. Who is the third rooster that will finish off both the US and Russia? That will be China,” the Yanuka said more than 170 years ago.

“At the time, China was like a kindergarten,” Rabbi Grossman said. “They were a huge country but backward in culture and technology and had a military that had no real weapons. Who could have imagined that China would one day be the biggest threat in the world?”

“The vision of righteous men is almost like prophecy and can foresee things regular men cannot,” Rabbi Grossman said. “God should protect us from what the Chinese leaders have in mind.  We are already beginning to see all that was prophesied to be before the Messiah. We are currently in the final stages of the Moshiach (Messiah).”

“The only solution at this stage is to increase in prayer and belief in God, to engage in charity, and to do God’s will,” Rabbi Grossman said. “We are about to see that God is One and His name is One.”

Rabbi Grossman is the sixth generation of his family residing in Jerusalem. He is universally respected and has been offered the position of Chief Rabbi of Israel twice, but declined both times in favor of continuing his outreach work.

Justin Trudeau has worked hard to suppress the popular protests against government mandates, invoking broad emergency powers in a move that many lawmakers consider improper and even illegal. One of his allies in this was Chrystia Freeland, the current deputy prime minister of Canada. As minister of finance, Freeland is charged with employing financial measures against supporters of the protest that include targeting crowdfunding platforms, authorizing Canadian banks to freeze accounts suspected of funding the blockades, and suspending insurance on vehicles in the protests. While last week Trudeau accused Conservative supporters of the protests of “standing with people who wave swastikas”, it has since been revealed that his fiscal enforcer is the granddaughter of an actual Nazi collaborator.

Rumors have been circulating for several years that Freeland’s maternal grandfather, Michael Chomiak, was a Ukrainian journalist with ties to the Nazis during World War II. This came to the forefront in 2014 when Freeland was exceptionally critical and called for international action against Russia for its invasion of Crimea. The Russian government sees Freeland as virulently anti-Russian and has placed her on their travel ban. Her family ties to the Nazis via Ukraine were noted in the media. Freeland denied the rumors, labeling them as Russian disinformation.

“American officials have publicly said, and even Angela Merkel has publicly said, that there were efforts on the Russian side to destabilize Western democracies, and I think it shouldn’t come as a surprise if these same efforts were used against Canada,” Freeland told reporters after they raised questions about the articles about her grandfather. The Globe and Mail also reported that an official in Freeland’s office denied the minister’s grandfather was a Nazi collaborator.  

The rumors persisted and were eventually verified. The Ukraine Archival Records held by the Province of Alberta show that Chomiak was an editor for the newspaper Krakivski Visti initially in Krakow and later in Vienna and then Bavaria as the Allied and Russian forces advanced. The Russians executed Nazi collaborators well as SS members. Krakivski Visti was seized by the Nazis from their Jewish owners and then operated as Nazi propaganda outlet.

Editorials in the newspaper described Poland as “infected by the Jews.” After the mass murder of Jews in Kyiv at Babi Yar, the editors wrote that the Jews got their “comeuppance” and without the Jews, the city was “beautiful, glorious.”

It was in Bavaria that Chomiak surrendered to Americans and, three years later, immigrated to Canada to reunite with his sister. 

The Los Angeles Holocaust Museum described the newspaper’s wartime operations:

“The editorial boards carried out a policy of soliciting Ukrainian support for the German cause,” the Holocaust Museum noted. “It was typical, within these publications, to not to give any accounts of the German genocidal policy, and largely, the editions resorted to silencing the mass killing of Jews in Galicia. Ukrainian newspapers presented the Jewish Question in light of the official Nazi propaganda, corollary to the Jewish world conspiracy.”

In fact, it later came to light that Freeland has known of her grandfather’s Nazi ties since at least 1996 when she helped edit a scholarly article for the Journal of Ukrainian Studies.

While hiding the truth of his activities, Freeland was unabashedly proud of him. On 24 of August 2016, a day after Black Ribbon Day, commemorating victims of both Stalinism and Nazism, Freeland Tweeted the following: “Thinking of my grandparents Mykhailo & Aleksandra Chomiak on Black Ribbon Day. They were forever grateful to Canada for giving them refuge and they worked hard to return freedom and democracy to Ukraine. I am proud to honour their memory today.”

As Russia masses its troops on the border with Ukraine and China rattles the sabers of its growing military, much conjecture is being made about how countries will align. The Centre for Research on Globalization published an article on its website suggesting that if a Cold War develops between the US and either Russia or China, Israel, considered one of the US’s most loyal allies, might remain neutral. 

NEUTRAL ISRAEL
The article quoted Israeli Foreign Minister Yair Lapid, who suggested that Israel would not automatically stand by the US in a recent interview with AxiosAxios, which suggested that Israel would not automatically stand by the US.

“At the moment, the [Israeli] assessment is that we don’t see a violent confrontation soon. I also don’t think a world war is about to start there,” Lap[id said. “We have a duty to act with caution about the Russia-Ukraine crisis that no other country has.” 

The author, Andrew Korybko, referred to the “false narrative” advanced by the mainstream media that Russia and Israel are enemies. At the same time, the article credits the “Alt-Media Community” (i.e., non-mainstream media) as advancing the narrative that “Russia/Putin is secretly anti-Zionists allied with the Iranian-led Resistance.”  The article in CRG suggested that Russia and Israel, in fact, have very close relations. This close alliance, the article suggests, will lead to Israel taking a neutral role in “the New Cold War’s Western Eurasian theater.”

“Israel isn’t an American puppet but is fiercely independent in terms of its foreign policy and that the US’ two top rivals have successfully cultivated excellent ties with it that are mutually beneficial,” the article concludes.

RABBI SPIRO: NOT SO BLACK AND WHITE
Rabbi Ken Spiro, a historian and Senior Lecturer and Researcher for Aish HaTorah Yeshiva, agreed that Israel could remain neutral in the current environment of shifting alliances.

“People try to frame international relations in black and white when it is actually a big mix of varying shades of gray,” Rabbi Spiro said. “No country is entirely the enemy of another, and alliances are nuanced.”

“The Soviet Union sided with the Arabs against Israel, but Russia is not the Soviet Union. The US used to be Israel’s staunchest ally, but now, the Democrats are turning on Israel, and even the US Jews can’t be relied upon like used to be the case. Obama turned on Israel, and now, from our side, Bennett is entirely unlike Netanyahu, though even that is not black and white.”

“We would like to think that countries have moral ideologies that guide them, but the bottom line is practical concerns. Unfortunately, governments have justified doing horrible things by using subjective morality. No country has permanent friends or enemies; only permanent personal interests.”

“Israel and the US do have an ideological and historical basis for our alliance, but Israel’s bottom line is survival in a very dangerous neighborhood. That places Iran, especially its nuclear program, at the forefront of our foreign policy. And if that means allying with Russia or being neutral and not aligning with the US, so be it. China and Israel have no ideological common ground, but China is a huge market for Israel’s high-tech. And for a country like Israel that has no natural resources, that means economic survival.”

RABBI WINSTON: “WHO IS FOR GOD? COME TO ME.”
Rabbi Pinchas Winston, a prolific end-of-days author, explained that Israel will begin in a neutral role in the developing Gog and Magog conflict but will certainly not remain so.

“On a Biblical level, the developing conflicts around the world are all focused on the growing conflict between Edom and Ishmael,” Rabbi Winston explained. “In modern terms, Edom has been split into different elements representing different aspects of Esau. Russia represents the brute militaristic aspect of Esau, Europe represents the religious aspect of Esau, and the US represents the materialistic aspect of Esau. Each one is in a separate conflict with its corresponding element in Ishmael. Europe is clearly losing the religious battle with Ishmael. Russia is at odds with Ishmael, occasionally winning and even allying with Ishmael. But eventually, it will be an all-out war. For the time being, the US is dominating Ishmael.”

“For now, Israel can be neutral as Ishmael and Esau fight it out and maneuver for dominance. In the end, we will be dragged into the war between Esau and Ishmael. Ishmael will beat Esau, but that is so God can show His greatness by establishing the Jews in Israel after the War of Gog and Magog.”

“This is clear from the fact that people are asking about where Israel stands in these issues. What connection does tiny Israel have with Ukraine and its conflict with Russia? But this is building up to Gog and Magog, and therefore people understand subconsciously that the focus will eventually shift to Israel.”

“It must be remembered that even though the Bible speaks about the War of Gog since it is a spiritual war, a war of good against evil, the boundaries will transcend politics and geography. It will be more about ‘Who is for God, come to me’ than about which country is allied with another country. There will absolutely be an individual choice, with each person choosing to ally with Israel or not. In this regard, Israel will not be neutral. Israel will be the litmus test, the way to determine who is on which side.”

Israel also fears that continued illegal construction in the Jerusalem-Jericho highway will inhibit the IDF's mobilization eastward in case of a war.
Defense Minister Benny Gantz and Prime Minister Naftali Bennett instructed the planning committee for Judea and Samaria to stop all discussions on building E-1, the corridor connecting Jerusalem to the city of Maaleh Adumim by the Jordan Valley. The plan involved building 3,500 apartment units on about three acres of land.

Along with the Meretz party, which is part of the government coalition, the pressure to stop the construction also came from Washington Israel Hayom. reports.

The plan was initially drawn up by former Prime Minister Yitzchak Rabin but has been delayed for several decades due to political considerations. Many claim that it will sever any chances of a future potential Palestinian State.
