PAKISTAN: Sentenced to Death for Blasphemy
Sources: Aljazeera, Deutsche Welle, Daily Mail

In 2013, Asif Pervaiz was working in a garment factory where he was reportedly pressured by his supervisor, Muhammad Saeed Khokher (also referred to as Saeed Ahmed Khokher), to convert from Christianity to Islam. After Asif sent text messages resisting the supervisor's demands, the father of four was accused of blasphemy and taken into custody where he has since been awaiting trial for seven years.
On September 8th, a court in Lahore ruled that Asif was guilty of blasphemy, sentencing him to three years in prison for "misusing" his phone and fining him $400 CAD. After serving his sentence, he is to be put to death by hanging. Asif rejects the charges against him and intends to appeal the ruling. On the other side, Muhammad denies that he had ever pressured Asif to convert.
At present, more than 80 people are in Pakistani prisons on charges of blasphemy. The contentious law drew international outrage in the case of Asia Bibi, a Christian mother who was sentenced to death over alleged blasphemous remarks but finally acquitted in 2018 after nine years of imprisonment (read more).
Despite Asia's release, the ongoing threats of angered civilians made it necessary for her to flee the country to an undisclosed location in Canada where immigrated family members were awaiting her arrival. Even when not convicted, such allegations alone can pose risk of endangerment to accused Christians and their families. For further reports on the various perils facing believers in Pakistan, go to our country report.
Remember Asif, along with his family, during this time of danger and suffering. Pray that the courts will rule justly on his behalf and that the government will curb such abuses by revoking the country's blasphemy laws, which have been frequently exploited to target vulnerable Christian minorities. May religious freedom be brought to the nation so believers can live in safety and peace among the other members of their communities. In the meantime, please continue to prayerfully lift up the many Pakistanis who are still imprisoned for their faith, along with those like Asia Bibi who have been forced to live in fear beyond the prison walls because of these allegations.

SRI LANKA: Disruptions by Mob Violence

Mob demonstrations are a common way to disrupt and protest Christianity in the nation of Sri Lanka. Although opposition often comes from the dominant Buddhist community, two recent incidents in the Batticaloa District appear to have been instigated by Hindu leaders.
On July 19th, a group of 45 people, including a member of the Hindu temple's board of trustees, forced their way into the Jesus Witness Church in Kommanthurai soon after the worship service had concluded. During the attack, the pastor and his family were assaulted and chairs were broken. The pastor's mobile phone was also damaged after he attempted to record the incident, which has since been reported to the police.
On August 8th, a funeral service in Palliyadithona was halted when approximately 50 villagers raided the cemetery and demanded that the funeral be conducted according to Hindu rites. The pastor called the police and the burial was finally able to take place two hours later, under the watchful protection of several officers.
While Christians can officially gather for worship in Sri Lanka, the tensions caused by opposing community members have become more complex. These followers of Christ are now finding themselves caught between the predominantly Buddhist Sinhalese population and the mainly Hindu Tamils. More information on the persecution of Christians in Sri Lanka is available here.
Please pray for the emotional, physical, and spiritual protection of Christians in Sri Lanka as they seek to practise their faith by faithfully gathering for worship despite the threat of danger. As they demonstrate the love and grace of God, may their commitment to the teachings of Jesus serve as a powerful testimony to those around them. Pray that the hearts of all people groups in Sri Lanka -- including those opposing the churches -- will be open to the Gospel so they too will understand the truth of God's Word and turn in faith to Christ.

INDIA: Christians Face Rising Threats

Christians in India are facing horrific levels of violence from Hindu radical extremists. This deadly campaign coincides with a government agenda to turn the country into a Hindu nation. A report from VOM Canada's partner, CBN News, provides context for some of the situations being reported. Click here to view the report.
A recent incident in Uttar Pradesh illustrates the severity of the hate crimes inspired by religious intolerance against Christians in India. On August 21st, "Prasanna Kumar" (whose name has been changed for security reasons) was attacked and brutally beaten. Claiming that Pastor Kumar was forcibly converting Hindus to Christianity, ten men pulled him from his motorcycle and threw him to the ground, where they relentlessly kicked him and beat him with wooden clubs.
The attack became so savage that Pastor Kumar thought he would not survive. "God gave me the grace to accept even death," he proclaimed. However, the thought of leaving his wife and young daughter was excruciating. After physically assaulting him for nearly two hours, the men finally left, promising to kill the pastor if he ever returned to the village.
After Pastor Kumar was found, members of his congregation assisted him to the police station. However, local officers refused to file a complaint, claiming he was attempting to register a false report. Finally, after the intervention of a church leader from outside the district, a report was filed but to date no action has been taken against the attackers.
Shifting the blame from the offenders to the victims is not uncommon. In Badaguda, Odisha state, followers of traditional tribal religions have blamed the prayers of Christians for driving away their gods. In one instance, the village headman told a pastor: "When you pray, our gods leave us. So you must stop praying. We will not let you conduct prayers inside the village."
The Christians erected a temporary shelter outside the village, but it was destroyed and the church members were beaten. Rather than attempting to stop the attackers, however, the police have threatened to arrest the Christians for "disturbing the peace" should they continue to gather for worship. For more on the persecution committed against believers in India, go to our country report.
May the Lord mightily use His people in India as bright lights amid the darkness surrounding them. Pray that He will strengthen and protect His followers as they rebuild their Christian communities, share their stories of faith, and encourage others who have experienced the trauma of persecution. Ask Him to specifically intervene on Pastor Kumar's behalf, fully healing and strengthening him. Additionally, intercede for the authorities in India, that they will cease to ignore the mob violence directed towards Christians by taking a stand against discrimination and intolerance -- using the law to protect the rights of all India's citizens.
If you would like to post a prayer of praise or petition on behalf of our persecuted family around the globe, visit VOMC's prayer wall.

~WORN OUT KNEES~
On February 26, 1829, a Jewish boy named Loeb Strauss was born in a cottage in the Bavarian village of Buttenheim. As a young man, Loeb changed his name to Levi and wound up in California, where he opened a textile company. One day, a gold miner walked into Levi’s shop. “Look at these,” said the miner, pointing to his pants. “I bought them six months ago, and now they are full of holes!” When Levi asked why, the miner explained, “We work on our knees most of the time.”
“What you need is some really strong material,” replied Levi. A tailor was called—and the rest is history. Soon miners across the West were wearing Levi Strauss’s jeans.
It seems to me that we Christians should have the same problem that plagued that miner—worn-out pants—for we ought to do most of our work on our knees.
Worn Knees Mean Reverence
We don’t have to kneel to pray, of course. The Bible describes many postures in prayer. Jesus prayed while standing with His eyes lifted to heaven. In Gethsemane, He fell prostrate on His face. In 1 Chronicles 17:16, David sat before the Lord in prayer. Sometimes Bible heroes prayed while lying on their beds or walking along the road as the disciples did with Jesus.
As we turn ourselves, our plans, and our problems over to Him, He intervenes. When we bow before Him, we’re acknowledging Him as our “Maker, Defender, Redeemer, and Friend.”
Worn Knees Mean Obedience
Worn knees also imply obedience. One of the strangest incidents in the life of King David involved moving the ark of the covenant from the village of Kirjath Jearim to its new home in Jerusalem. According to 1 Chronicles 13, David anticipated the day with excitement, for “the thing was right in the eyes of all the people.” Placing the ark in a new cart, they started off as David and all Israel played music before God.
The music stopped abruptly, however, when the oxen stumbled, the cart tottered, and a man named Uzza reached out his hand to steady the ark. God instantly struck him dead, “and he died there before God.”
It wasn’t until afterward that David realized what had gone wrong. He had failed to arrange for the ark to be transported as prescribed by the Mosaic Law. Second, he had failed to pray and to inquire of the Lord about how to go about it. “We did not consult Him,” David confessed in 1 Chronicles 15:13.
Sometimes we make the same mistake. We should be on our knees before accepting a job offer, making a purchase, choosing a new church, or making any decision of consequence. People are quietly watching, and they know when we’re living in prayerful obedience or when, on the other hand, we act without consulting Him.
Worn Knees Mean Dependence
It’s also obvious to others when our knees draw down blessings from above. In the January/February 2003 issue of Pray! Magazine, Elmer Towns said that he and his wife made it through college by faith, praying together and trusting God to meet their needs.
“One evening,” he wrote, “the only thing in the kitchen cabinet was a can of tuna, so my wife served a tuna casserole. As we clasped hands to thank God for the food, I prayed, ‘God, you know we are broke. You know it’s two days until payday. You know we are willing to fast until we get money, but we ask you to please take care of our needs.’”
Just as they finished, the laundry man came to the door. He quickly explained that he hadn’t come to pick up but to deliver. “A few months ago,” he said, “your landlord asked me to pass along twenty dollars to you to pay for having thawed the pipes for him. I had forgotten about it until today.”
If you want to pull down blessings from above and impact the world around you, you’ve got to be surrendered to God’s will, taking life on your knees, bowed in humble reverence, obedience, and dependence on Him.
Do your knees give off signs of life? Like a California miner, let’s each declare: “I do most of my work on my knees.”
-Dr. David Jeremiah

ANGOLA

Population: 25 Million

Christians: 4 million

Praise God that Angola has been touched by the Gospel; may the power of the Gospel continue to impact this country.

War and suffering have ravaged this country and therefore many challenges exist for the church:

A deep sense of forgiveness to be shown by the Christians to all in society. May the Gospel be the oil of love that touches this country.

That the Believers would walk worthy of their calling, living holy lives.

For deep and powerful unity amongst a fragmented society: may the Church work together in unity.

Despite remarkable church growth, many occult and unBiblical practices remain. There is a lack of good and powerful Bible teaching. There are many people who go to church and claim Christianity, but not many disciples.

Training of pastors and Bible teachers is an urgent need: please pray for the agencies seeking to train men and women to serve in the church.

Please pray for the ministry of the Church to young people; this is a time of peace--please pray that the Church would make use of this unique opportunity.

There are peoples and areas of the country still un-reached, please pray God would call men and women to Go.

Bible translation is an ongoing need, as is Christian literature. People are hungry for the truth of God's Word. Please pray that the need would be met!

PAKISTAN: Teen Girls Kidnapped for Forcible Marriages

Maira Shahbaz and Saneha Kinza Iqbal
Photo of Saneha (on right): Church in Chains
On April 28th, 14-year-old Maira Shahbaz (also referenced as "Maria") had been abducted at gunpoint by Mohamad Nakash and his two accomplices while she was walking to her home near Faisalabad. She was then forced to convert to Islam and marry her abductor. The teen girl's parents challenged the validity of the marriage but Mohamad presented a marriage certificate falsely stating that Maira was 19 years old. The kidnapper has also issued death threats against Maira and her family if they continued to pursue this action.
On July 30th, a court ruled that Maira should be allowed to stay in a women's shelter until the Lahore High Court was able to hear her case. However, on August 4th, the High Court judge ruled that the conversion and marriage were legal. She was ordered to remain with Mohamad and "be a good wife." The court disregarded her birth certificate and baptismal certificate, which indicated her true age. Following this ruling, Maira was reportedly in tears. A friend and advocate stated, "With this ruling, no Christian girl in Pakistan is safe."
According to the most recent reports, Maira has managed to escape her captor and is now in hiding somewhere in the Faisalabad area, along with her mother and siblings. The police have reportedly been ordered by the courts to ensure her security.
On July 22nd, 15-year-old Saneha Kinza Iqbal was kidnapped on her way to church by Saeed Amanat, a 30-year-old married man with four children. Saeed is a security guard at a hospital in Faisalabad where Shaneha's mother was admitted for treatment in June. During this time, he became familiar with the young girl, finding out where she lived.
When Saneha did not return home after prayers that morning, a neighbour confirmed seeing Saeed in a vehicle with her. Although the girl's family reported the incident to police, the officials refused to take any action. Saneha's brother, Waseem Morris, then went to Saeed's home where the abductor's father promised that Saneha would be returned, but a few days later he changed his mind. On July 28th, the kidnapper phoned the young girl's family, threatening them if they took any further action.
While Saneha's fate is not known at this point, her family is concerned that she will be forcibly converted to Islam and married, similar to the situations facing Maira and another young teen girl, Huma Younus, whose case was previously reported by VOMC earlier this year (read more). Despite the efforts of Maira's family to have action taken, police refused to cooperate with them until August 19th.
Please lift up Maira, Saneha, Huma, and other previously abducted Christian girls, to the Lord in prayer, asking Him to mightily intervene by rendering His justice in each of their cases. Ask that He will also provide needed help and consolation to their distraught families. Pray that God's ministering angels will surround each of these girls, their loved ones, and all who courageously advocate on their behalf, with divine protection. May His Holy Spirit's conviction be upon the abductors, and all who encourage such crimes against vulnerable teen girls, bringing to light the seriousness of their wrongful actions so they will acknowledge their need for repentance and endeavour to do what is right.

ETHIOPIA: Christians Targeted in Violent Outbreaks

Fire damage in Shashamene.

The Oromia region of Ethiopia is in the midst of turmoil as separatists spread dissent against the government. The murder of prominent singer Hachalu Hundessa on June 29th set off the civil unrest, leaving hundreds dead.
During the third week of August, a violent outbreak took place in a predominantly Muslim village of Senbete Sinkile. In the attack, which was perpetrated by a youth wing of separatists known as the Qeerroo, it appears that Christians in particular were targeted. While there were no fatalities resulting from this attack, a number of people were injured and damages were done to a church and the homes of various Christians in the village. A number of victims were forced to flee, despite flood conditions, seeking refuge in the mainly Christian city of Awassa.
Back in the month of June, the town of Shashamene had also faced terrible violence and destruction at the hands of the Qeerroo. The homes of two pastors were burned to the ground and anything not burned was then vandalized. One of the pastors, Mesfin, said that the imam from the nearby mosque stood by and laughed as his house was being burned. This pastor's motorcycle was also completely destroyed by the attackers.
The wives of the two pastors owned small businesses to supplement their families' modest incomes; those buildings were set on fire as well. VOMC partners have been able to provide financial assistance to these pastors' families, equipping them to continue ministering to the needs of others in their village. For more on the difficulties facing Christians in Ethiopia, go to our country report.
Pray for each person who was victimized by these recent incidents of violence, asking for God's comforting presence to be tangibly sensed in their lives. In the process, may they also receive needed healing of the trauma and devastating loss that resulted from the attacks. Pray that those who were forced to flee their homes will experience God's wonderful provision and restoration. Overall, may His Spirit of peace come to the region -- and into the hearts of individuals -- so differences can be resolved and a sense of unity be established in these Ethiopian communities.

Photo: ChinaAid
Pastor Wang Yi of the Early Rain Covenant Church is presently serving a nine-year prison sentence. He was arrested, along with his wife, in December 2018. While Pastor Wang's wife, Jiang Rong, was released on bail, the authorities have barred her from interacting with family, friends, and church members. She is being constantly monitored by security agents and essentially has no freedom of movement.
When Pastor Wang and Jiang were originally arrested, their young son, Joshua Shuya Wang, went to live with his grandparents. He has since been reunited with his mother but is also restricted from interacting with others. Each day, he is taken by a police vehicle directly to a public school where he is being indoctrinated. It is believed this government intimidation is a response to Pastor Wang's refusal to compromise his faith while in prison.
Since the church's closure, the property is now being rented out for the operation of area businesses without permission from the church. Previous reports relating to the Early Rain Covenant Church are available here.
Remember to uphold Pastor Wang as he faithfully serves his sentence, asking the Lord to keep him safe while in prison and minister to his daily practical and spiritual needs. Pray that God's protection, provision and encouragement will also sustain his wife Jiang and their young son Joshua -- granting each member of this ministering family a steadfast endurance in the midst of governmental oppression. While awaiting Pastor Wang's release, may God honour this faithful servant's unwavering testimony by using it as a means to reach fellow prisoners, guards and governing officials with the Gospel.

A SWEET-SMELLING OFFERING

Numbers 28.2b: “See that you present to Me at the appointed time the food for My offerings

made by fire, as an aroma pleasing to Me.”

The Lord God smells your offerings. Noah's offering had a pleasing aroma to the Lord (Genesis

8.20-21). That means that it was an acceptable sacrifice to Him.

Our worship/offerings must be preceded by the fear of the Lord before they can be acceptable:

Hebrews 12:28: “Therefore let us be grateful for receiving a Kingdom that cannot be shaken, and

thus let us offer to God acceptable worship with reverence and holy fear ........ .”

Notice this: The Ephesus Church in Rev. 2 had some really good qualities in God's sight. They

were hard workers, a persevering people. They were bull's-eye good at testing and disclaiming

false teachers. They had endured hardship for the Lord's Name and had not grown weary. Now,

that commendation should look good on anybody's performance appraisal – Right?

Not necessarily so! In all that good – something absolutely vital was missing. Hear the Words of

the Lord Jesus to them: “I hold this against you: You have forsaken your first love” (Rev. 2.4-5).

Without that relationship, the whole structure of all their good performance appraisal collapsed

(Rev. 2.5).

Remember that though we have physical bodies, we (the church) are a spiritual structure (1

Pet. 2:5), saved to worship our God acceptably (Heb. 12:28, John 4.23-24); and He gave us His

Word to show us how (Ps. 119.105).

So, let us look at our worship: Remember the woman coming into the house where our Lord

was having dinner (John 12.1-8)? She poured out her worship on the Lord Jesus in the form of a

very expensive perfume – and it was, oh, so sweet to Him. The fragrance filled the house. Judas

complained that the perfume could have been sold and the money given to the poor, but our Lord

accepted this woman's worship and said that it was the proper thing to do.

Now beware of thinking that our Lord does not want us to help the poor. On the contrary, it is

good and godly to do so– especially to those of the household of faith (Gal. 6.10). However, if your

zeal for helping the poor is squeezing out the time that you should be soaking in the perfume of

God's Presence through His Word (S of S 1.3) -- then you have left your first-love, and your

offering of help for the poor ceases to be acceptable to the Lord. It loses the characteristic of

being a sweet aroma to Him. So we see two aspects of what is worship acceptable to God: It is

brought to Him in holy fear and awe, and it is brought to Him out of a First-love relationship.

Now, the church in Ephesus had good qualities – but she had lost that sweet aroma that her

Lord was looking for. What a crash this church had taken (“remember the height from which

you have fallen”). The preacher, Charles Spurgeon, brings a sobering reality to our attention in

this description of the Ephesian church: Apparently the pastor of the church had not noticed that

they had fallen from that high place. In Sardis a dead church had a reputation for being “alive”

(Rev. 3.1); and in Laodicea (Rev. 3.14-22), a lukewarm church, in their pride, thought they were

doing just fine.

None of these churches were aware that their worship or serving had lost its sweet smelling

aroma for the Lord. There was no First-love relationship there, no soaking in God's Presence for

His sweet fragrance to rub off on them. There was no longing for the sweet taste of His Word (Ps.

119.103), which would have been pleasing to the Lord God. There was no delight to run in the

path of His Word (Ps. 119.35). These churches had deceived themselves. Folks, don't try to live off

of a reputation you may have received from people who might praise you for your works. His

thoughts are higher than ours (Is. 55.8-9). Let God's Word examine you. Let the report that our

Lord gave the churches in Revelation also speak to you (1 Cor. 10.11).

Folks, reverence and godly fear approaches the Lord (Ps. 5.7), and delights at the awesome fragrance of His Presence (S of S 1.3). The believer finds more joy in God's Word and in prayer

and worship to Him, than the world can find with all its riches (Ps. 119.14).

The believer stays there in the Lord's Presence for a time (Ps. 27.4) and soaks it up, during which

a marvellous thing happens- that fragrance/aroma that accompanies His Presence with His

people rests on their worship and offerings of service - and are pleasing to Him.

Let us each one strive to smell God's pleasing Presence, and then seek in turn to be a pleasing

aroma as we daily present our lives to Him (Romans 12:1, 2 Peter 1:10).

Love to you all in Christ Jesus,

Sandy & Michael

RUSSIA: Strict Opposition to Missionary Activity

Source: Forum18

Rubles, gavel

In July 2016, Russia passed religion laws restricting "illegal missionary activity" by either citizens or foreigners. This activity could involve speaking to people about religion, or the distribution of either printed, audio or video materials. Between January and June of this year, there have been 42 known prosecutions, resulting in 36 convictions. All those who were convicted received fines.

Most of the recent convictions had not involved religious organizations but rather individuals who were sharing their faith. Those charged were convicted because they did not notify the authorities of the existence of their "religious group," even though they were acting as individuals.

These issues do not only affect Christians but also Muslims and citizens belonging to other religious groups. According to Russia's current laws, individuals or groups engaging in missionary or evangelistic activities of any kind could possibly be subjected to stiff opposition. The Forum18 news agency has compiled a list of known prosecutions that have taken place within the first six months of 2020. This webpage provides more details.

Prayerfully uphold our brothers and sisters in Russia who are presently encountering opposition for sharing their faith. Ask the Lord to provide for those who have received fines so they will have the resources required to pay the penalties. Pray that the government will respect its citizens' rights for religious freedom by honouring Russia's constitutional guarantees for such privileges. In the meantime, may God's people be encouraged to not "grow weary of doing good" but rather look with an expectant hope to His promises of vindication and abundant spiritual harvest (Galatians 6:9).

~KINDNESS~ (this is in tribute to my beautiful father in Law who sadly passed away yesterday)
Everyone at some time or another can be a help to others. Everyone also has times they need help from others. Giving and receiving is not only a principle of sowing and reaping, but a way of life. We are both givers and receivers of kindness and receive blessings in either role.
We must forget ourselves, many times, that we may be a helping hand. One of the first laws of being blessed is that we will bless others. Why? Because when we help others, God takes care of our needs. When we truly give of ourselves is when we truly give, and we then learn the joy of giving.
When young and helpless, we were receivers of the nurturing love of our parents who cared for all our needs. When old, many times the role is reversed and we are either caregivers, or helpers, for those who cared for our every need; years before.
Regardless of what role you are in, whether giving or receiving, do all with joy and reliance upon the strength of our Lord.
Remember, we can do all things through Christ Jesus who strengthens us. Giving starts the receiving process. Our outflow determines our inflow, in most everything we do. The blessing is in giving and also in receiving. Kindness is a fruit of the Spirit.
Remember the words of Ralph Waldo Emerson, who said, "You cannot do a kindness too soon, for you never know how soon will be too late!
Blessings,

GARDEN OF GRACE
Each day we are called to God's garden of grace
He beckons us sweetly and calls, "come unto me"
He paid the price for our salvation and our sins erased,
Our Savior is our Dearest Friend, who has set us free.

He awaits in the garden in the most secret place
We know where to find him every day,
As we draw nigh, we can almost see his joyful face,
He'll draw nigh to us in this blessed gospel way.

The Rose of Sharon blooms, who is fairest of them all
His beauty and splendor, we can always behold,
He is our peace and refuge.......the Lily of the Valley,
The fairest of ten thousand to our soul.

In God's garden of grace, the fragrance is so sweet
Each flower is watered by from God's loving hand,
His presence is so real-- all his promises He'll fulfill,
He tends his garden and on each promise, we can stand.

His garden of grace can be found inside our heart's open door.
His Spirit lives within, to guide us each new day,
He meets with us in fellowship and our spirits can soar,
In God's garden of grace....we see Jesus, the only way.

Blessings In Christ,

Radwan Muhammad is a Kurdish teacher and headmaster for a Christian school in the city of Afrin in northern Syria. He was ordered by the Sham Legion (Faylaq al-Sham) -- a coalition of Sunni Muslim groups -- to turn over the school building for an Islamic school. According to local sources, Radwan told them, "I will hand you the building in one case only: if Jesus Christ comes to earth again."
On July 30th, Radwan was detained by the group and has been accused of apostasy. Sources say that he is being held at their headquarters in Afrin and have expressed concerns for his life, fearful that he may be executed. The Sham Legion is controlled by Turkey and associated with the Muslim Brotherhood. Many of the fighters are former al Qaeda and ISIS members. The city of Afrin has been under Turkish control since 2018. For more information on the difficulties encountered by Christians in Syria, go to our country report.
Please pray for Radwan's safe release and that the Christian school will be able to continue. May the Turkish authorities respect the rights of people residing in the Afrin area and restrain the agenda of militia groups under their control. Also intercede for the believers of the Kurdistan region -- bordering Syria, Turkey, Iraq and Iran -- who are presently facing oppression from all sides.

Shamiram Isavi Khabizeh
Photo: Article 18
In July 2017, Pastor Victor Bet-Tamraz was sentenced to ten years in prison. Arrested in 2014 during a Christmas celebration, he was convicted of evangelism, illegal house-church activities and "acting against national security" (read more). In June 2017, his wife Shamiram was also arrested and received a sentence of five years.
Since their conviction, they have faced multiple appeal hearings, only to be notified of their cancellation for various reasons. The couple's latest hearing, scheduled for July 1st, was likewise cancelled. Then on July 19th, Pastor Victor was informed by his lawyer that their final appeal had been rejected. Both Pastor Victor and Shamiram received notification on August 11th that they had five days to turn themselves in to Iran's notorious Evin Prison.
Reports have recently surfaced that the couple fled the country on August 15th, the day before the deadline. Their daughter Dabrina lives in Switzerland and will not disclose their location for safety reasons. However, she assures people that they are "safe and well." The couple regrets having to leave their homeland but, considering the harsh conditions at the Evin Prison, felt it was necessary at their age. They intend to resume their attempts to clear their names from abroad with hopes of returning to Iran if the charges are dropped.
"We continue to pray and hope for their sentences to be dropped," states Dabrina. "We pray for justice -- both for my parents and for all believers suffering in prisons." To learn more about the persecution of Christians in Iran, go to country report.
Praise God that Pastor Victor and Shamiram have found a place of refuge until their case is justly resolved. Pray that efforts to clear their names will be successful. Continue to prayerfully uphold the many Christians presently suffering in Iranian prisons, along with numerous others who are facing oppression and an uncertain future because of their faith in Christ.

ALGERIA: Court Upholds Church Closure Order
Source: Middle East Concern

Church members hang signs protesting
the illegal closure of their church.
The Spring of Life Church in Makouda is the second largest Protestant church in Algeria with about 700 members. In October 2019, it was ordered to be closed, along with two other churches (see this report). The closures happened under Ordinance 06-03, which states that permission must be obtained before using a building for non-Muslim worship.
Since the ordinance was enacted in 2006, Algerian authorities have failed to respond to any application for permission. As a result, it became common practice to rent a building and then inform local authorities that it is being used as a place of worship. Starting in November 2017, however, authorities began acting on the ordinance by closing several churches.
In response to the closures, ten of the churches filed cases with the administrative courts. The Spring of Life Church recently received a court ruling upholding the order to close. The congregants of other closed churches are concerned that this may set a precedent for similar rules. There are also concerns that this may embolden governors to order more closures.
On the same day that the Spring of Life Church was closed, the Full Gospel of Tizi-Ouzou (the largest Protestant church in Algeria) was also forced to close. Video footage of that raid is available here.
Prayerfully remember the church leaders represented by Algeria's various denominational groups as they seek to wisely address these mounting challenges and determine how to carry on with the work of the Gospel. May the country's governing leaders and those of the courts come to understand the importance of religious freedom, and thereby enact laws in support of such.

UNFOLDING THE MASTERPIECE

“And the world passes away, and the lust of it. But he who does the will of God abides forever… 1 John 2:17.”

From our point of view, as disciples of Jesus Christ, there is both a desire and a struggle involved in discerning the will of God. Yet, understanding the will of God involves great rewards. The Bible promises “…he who does the will of God abides forever.” Who would not want to live The Life that abides forever? Who would not want to enjoy the abundant life Jesus promises? (John 10:10b)

From God’s point of view, He is working on a beautiful masterpiece. The Bible assures us: “For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them.” (Ephesians 2:10) These good works have already been planned by God. They are ordained for us to unfold by our walk of faith. The Bible makes clear our approach should be to actively pursue the opportunities the Lord has prepared for us.

Understanding that this masterwork is started by God, The Apostle Paul told the churches at Colossae: “Therefore if you have been raised up with Christ, keep seeking the things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your mind on the things above, not on the things that are on earth. For you have died and your life is hidden with Christ in God.” (Col. 3:1-3) Therefore, we must continue to ask, seek, and knock so God can complete the beautiful work He is doing in our lives. (Read Matthew 7:7-8)

Of course, understanding the will of God will not always be easy. It involves more than a sentence in a story or a lyric in a song. It is seeing the story to which the sentence belongs and the song for which the lyrics are written. By definition, to understand something carries the idea of assembling facts into an organized whole and making sense of them – like pieces of a puzzle coming together until the image is made clear. We might compare it to a novelist writing, editing, and rewriting a story until the sound of the words is in line with the message placed in his heart by God.

The one who understands the will of God sees each piece of the puzzle from two perspectives. Although some of the pieces have rugged and painful edges, the disciple also sees them from God’s perspective being fitted firmly together to complete the masterpiece in us that will shine for all eternity. As the Apostle Paul told the believers at Philippi: “For I am confident of this very thing, that He who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus.”

SOUTH SUDAN: Christians Killed in Church Attack

At least 23 people were killed and 20 wounded when unidentified gunmen stormed an Anglican church in the village of Makol Cheui on July 27th. After killing the church's deacon, along with women and children who had sought refuge in the church compound, they vandalized the church, destroying worship instruments.
After killing the people of the church, the attackers moved throughout the village. When they finished their slaughter of innocent lives, the village was burned to the ground. Initially, six people were missing, and six children had been abducted. However, their bodies were later found in the bush.
Warring factions in South Sudan have created an extremely unstable situation. While 90 percent of Jonglei State would identify themselves as Christians, the overall population consists of many different ethnic groups. Among these groups are also those who oppose Christianity. Hundreds have died in the violence between the various groups. Attacks such as this risk jeopardizing ongoing peace talks within the country, in attempts to end the civil war.
Speaking about this situation, as well as another attack in which an archdeacon and three pastors were killed in the village of Jalle, Bishop Moses Anur Ayom gave the following statement: "I am not happy about this issue of killing and destroying churches. I would like to appeal to the international community to intervene. As a church leader, I forgive the gunmen. The Bible says we have to forgive those who do wrong to us."
Please pray that God's love and peace will prevail in this very troubled nation. Also prayerfully uphold the church leaders who are seeking to provide guidance to their people. May the perpetrators responsible for these recent attacks realize the gravity of their sin and come to Christ in genuine repentance, seeking the forgiveness that only He can provide and ultimately surrendering their lives to Him.

PAKISTAN: Man Charged with Blasphemy
Sources: CLAAS, Pakistan Christian Post, UCA News

A Christian man was beaten and charged with blasphemy on August 5th, following comments made on his Facebook account about the Islamic celebration of Lailat al Miraj. The celebration involves eating sacrificial meat. In response, Sohail Masih allegedly posted: "It is not possible that the blood of goats and bulls can wash away sins. The incident of Miraj is based on a lie." The post came to the attention of a mosque leader, who claimed that "Muslims were extremely hurt" by the comment.
As news of the post spread, a group gathered and began to beat Sohail. Police intervened, taking him to the police station. When the crowds heard that charges had not yet been laid against him, they began to attack the station until the accused was charged with blasphemy.
With the help of police, Sohail's wife Shunila, and their two young daughters, escaped to another city where they are being protected, since mobs threatened to burn down their house. Investigations into the incident raise disturbing questions. Those who know Sohail, a salesman at a small shop, say that he could not write and did not know how to share a post on his phone. It is believed someone may have maliciously shared the picture using his account while he was helping a customer. His wife acknowledges that he had seen the post but had not shared it, nor would he have done such a thing.
Pakistan's infamous blasphemy laws have been frequently abused, often as a way to attack Christians and even at times to obtain personal gain in business disputes. For more on the persecution facing Christians in Pakistan, go to our online country report.
Please remember Sohail in your prayers, along with his wife, young daughters, parents and others who are facing backlash because of this incident. Pray that the truth will be revealed and justice will ultimately prevail, bringing freedom to the innocent. Also intercede for Pakistan's governmental and judicial leaders who need to recognize the many ways in which these laws are being seriously abused. May they be willing to make the necessary changes, despite opposition from Islamic leaders and members of the general public.

PRAISE REPORT

NEPAL: Pastor Finally Released on Bail

Pastor Keshab and his wife Junu after his release.
Photo: Morning Star News
Pastor Keshab Raj Acharya was finally released on bail in late June after spending three months in prison. Sources state that the bail amount was exorbitant, considering the charges against him.
Pastor Keshab was first arrested on March 23rd, after a video was uploaded to YouTube in which he allegedly stated that God could heal COVID-19 through prayer. Despite denying that he uploaded the video, Pastor Keshab was arrested after being asked to pray for a woman who had contracted the virus. He was then charged with spreading false information and misleading his followers.
Released on bail April 8th, Pastor Keshab was rearrested the same day and further charged with "outraging religious feelings" and "attempting to convert." Bail was set at approximately $5,500 CAD, which his wife couldn't afford to pay, and so he was returned to prison. When the bail was finally able to be posted on May 13th, police arrested him a third time while he was still at the courthouse. This time, he was charged with printing and distributing Gospel tracts.
After being denied bail again, Pastor Keshab was transferred to a remote prison that is renowned for its harsh conditions. In late June, a judge reviewed the case and set bail at $3,300 CAD. Five days later, Pastor Keshab was finally released. On behalf of their family, which includes the couple's two young children, his wife Junu is thankful for the prayers and support of fellow Christians. During this time, however, as the church was unable to pay the rent for the facility, they had to vacate the building.
Join us in praising God for working out Pastor Keshab's eventual release! Pray that all the charges against him will be dropped and that he will remain free to raise his young children in the ways of the Lord and continue ministering to others, despite this setback. May God provide these believers a suitable worship facility, in fulfillment of the Scriptural promise that He will build His church and the gates of hell will not prevail against it (Matthew 16:18). Additionally, may this pastoring couple be given wisdom and divinely appointed opportunities as they endeavour to bring this about in their community.

Guangxi Province, which is the home province for these people, is a spiritual desert. Please pray for the small number of believers there. The church has to grow among the Han Chinese Mandarin. Then they will reach out to this people group.

Again, there has been growth in the church, but most of the believers are not well taught and so error is rampant. Please pray that the believers would be well taught.

Please pray that they would have the resources and the Bible in their own language.

STRIPPING AWAY THE LAYERS OF SELFISHNESS

“Who is wise and understanding among you?  Let him show by good conduct that his works are done in the meekness of wisdom. But if you have bitter envy and self-seeking in your hearts, do not boast and lie against the truth.  This wisdom does not descend from above but is earthly, sensual, and demonic. For where envy and self-seeking exist, confusion and every evil thing are there.  But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality and without hypocrisy. Now the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace...James 3:13-18.”

God has laid this scripture on my heart this morning. These scriptures speak clearly to us about the motives in each of our hearts. I must confess my motives have not always been pure and clean before my Lord, and they are usually very insidious and deceptive.  Selfishness is our human nature and the very miracle of the Christian walk is allowing our Abba Father to strip away the layers of selfishness in our life.

You see, I have learned that this is not something we can do ourselves.  Because of the depth of our selfishness, only Abba Father can truly examine and know the selfish areas of our life.  The Psalmist David says "search me oh God and know my ways."  I remember the days before I was totally yielded to God how confusion and inner war raged on and on.  The battle to do God's way and our own selfish way was taking its toll on my physical, as well as emotional health.  Once free from those selfish desires was so freeing and a much less heavy load to carry.

I challenge each and every one of my precious brothers and sisters in Christ to ask Abba Father to "search our hearts" to empty those selfish, hidden areas in our lives.  Total freedom in Christ comes through this emptying and I rejoice that He has begun this emptying in mine... however, I know there are still those hidden recesses that need continued work.

I rejoice that I have a Father who never gives up on me, nor does He condemn me for my selfishness.  He just continues to peel away those ugly layers and with each peeling, I can love my Abba Father even more deeply..  Truth, knowledge, and wisdom are my heartfelt desire for all who read this right now. Praise be to our God and Father who loves us dearly and unconditionally!

Churches burned to the ground. Tens of thousands displaced. Tragic numbers gruesomely killed.

You likely have not seen or heard this on the news.

Increasing insurgent violence and terrorist attacks are devastating the nation of Mozambique. The people are traumatized and suffering.

And the world isn’t talking about it.

But God sees this unfolding tragedy. He cares deeply. And He offers the only eternal solution through His son Jesus.

Because ultimately the greatest problem in Mozambique is not violence, it is the sin that separates humanity from God. And Jesus’ blood offers redemption, forgiveness, and eternal life to every Mozambican.

As Muslim extremist groups attempt to sow fear, God’s perfect love continues to cast it out.

May the people of Mozambique receive Jesus' love, and may His peace reign in their hearts, homes, and across their nation.

Together let's watch and pray,

KAZAKHSTAN: Church Buildings Confiscated

City officials in Kazakhstan's capital of Nur-Sultan have ordered the confiscation of the Grace Presbyterian Church building, as well as the place of worship being constructed on the same site for the Agape Pentecostal Church. The authorities claim that the land is needed for a new public kindergarten.
In 2001, Grace Church purchased a former college building and has spent considerable money renovating the property. The compensation now being offered to the church by the city is considered well below market value.
Members of the Agape Church dreamed of having their own building for years, and all official approvals for the building had been received from the city. They had only recently begun construction on their facility when the order was received.
As for Grace Church, this is not the first time it has faced troubles. In 2014, the same order was given, also ostensibly to build a kindergarten. At the time, an agreement was reached. Additionally, back in 2014, the former pastor was convicted of allegedly harming the mental health of a church member. Even though that same member denied all allegations, the pastor received a four-year suspended sentence (see this report). For more information on the persecution of Christians in Kazakhstan, or to review previously posted reports, go to our country report.
Please prayerfully uphold the congregation members and leaders of these two churches as they deal with the legal challenges set before them. Pray that this issue will be resolved without unnecessary duress and that the church members will be able to retain rightful ownership of their property. May Christians in Kazakhstan be given open doors of opportunity to spread the Good News of the Gospel throughout their communities by testifying of God's life-changing power -- even among the governing officials opposing them -- so many more will be enlightened to His sovereignty, truth and righteousness.

ERITREA: Thirty Christians Arrested at Wedding

Eritrean authorities continued their ongoing crackdown on unregistered religious groups when 30 guests were arrested at a wedding ceremony in late June. These Christians were arrested in the capital city of Asmara, joining 15 others who had been previously arrested in April and sent to a prison camp.
The government of Eritrea is known as one of the most oppressive in the world, notorious for its arbitrary arrests and detention of people -- without any trial. Last year alone, between May and August, more than 330 Christians were arrested.
Since religious restrictions were instituted in 2002, only four religious groups are legally allowed by the government: Eritrean Orthodox, Roman Catholic, Lutheran and Sunni Islam. Membership in any other group is strictly prohibited, and even members of these legally recognized groups are not necessarily immune from harassment.
View an informative video report, including interviews with persecuted Eritrean believers. Additional reports on incidents of persecution in this country are available at our online country report.
Remember the hundreds of believers presently being imprisoned in Eritrea, some of them already having endured many years of inhumane treatment under terrible conditions. Pray that these prisoners and their families be endowed with inner strength through the divine intervention of the Holy Spirit. May those responsible for the country's oppressive laws realize the error of their ways and come to respect the rights of all citizens by treating others as they themselves would like to be treated.

CHINA: Churches Converted to Cultural Centres

Continue to pray that Christians in China will be faithful
despite authorities' efforts to close churches.
Photo: Open Doors
As China continues its crackdown on churches, some state-approved Three-Self Churches have been "voluntarily" converted into cultural centres. In Jiangsu province, the Flowing Stream Church was disbanded in 2019, accused of "occupying the village's cultural base." It has now been turned into the "Yangzai Township Flowing Stream Village Cultural Service Centre" where the socialist principles of President Xi are promoted, in the governing officials' attempt to spread "positive energy" to the community.
A similar fate happened to the Beizhouzhuang Church. Shut down in October over registration problems, the members were to have "voluntarily" donated the facility to the community, turning it into the Beizhouzhuang Cultural Compound. The church has been unable to meet since being closed. There have been reports that dozens of other government-approved churches were forced to close as well.
If you have not yet had the opportunity to view Greg Musselman's interview with Bob Fu from ChinaAid, we encourage you to go to this page to learn more about the challenges facing China's Christians.
Pray that the Lord will make it possible for Christians throughout China to receive greatly needed fellowship, teaching and encouragement, despite the oppression they are experiencing. May they also be inspired with new and innovative ways to spread the Gospel message. Intercede for the members of any churches still in operation who are likewise facing the uncertainty of potential shutdown, asking God to minister spiritual strength, peace and hope to His persecuted people by impressing upon their hearts the promises contained in His infallible Word.

This island is literally divided. In 1974 Turkey invaded, capturing roughly 37% of the land. An actual 180 km barrier separates the Republic of Cyprus from the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.

Though this land is broken in two, God desires its 1.2 million people to be unified in Him.

Yet most Cypriots see religion as cultural. Turkish Crypriots claim Islam, while 78% of the Greek Cypriots adhere to the Greek Orthodox church. But ALL of them need a saving and life-changing relationship with Jesus. This is the reason Paul and Barnabas came to these shores 2,000 years ago.

Coronavirus lockdowns, oil disputes between Turkey and the UN, and a divided capitol complicate existing divisions. But a move of God could bring lasting reconciliation through Jesus.

And so we pray.

Together let's watch and pray,

The Prayercast Team
Pray for Cyprus

PAKISTAN: Call to Expel All Christians

A video from a Muslim cleric has gone viral in Pakistan, promoting hatred towards Christians and demanding that all of them be thrown out of the country. Referring to the followers of Jesus as "the worst infidels of the universe," the cleric speaking in the video declares that "Christians have no right to live in this Islamic country."
While the video is new, the message is not. The country's constitution refers to religious freedom for all citizens, but the government offers little to no help for religious minorities. Messages such as those contained in the video encourage intolerance which can lead to violence.
Over the years, blasphemy laws have been frequently abused by the accusers, as false allegations against Christians are often used for personal gain and may result in innocent believers unjustly languishing in prison for years or the tragic loss of their lives. To learn more about the persecution of Christians in Pakistan, or to access previously posted reports, go to our country report.
Pray that Pakistan's government officials and military leaders will defend the constitutional rights of Christians and other citizens who are representative of the country's various minority groups. May the antagonistic message contained in the cleric's video fall on deaf ears, so that those who hear it will not be influenced by the strife and hatred that he is instigating. Pray for the protection of Christians who must face such allegations and threats on a daily basis, asking God to give them the grace, wisdom and favour to live peaceably among the people of their communities.

NIGERIA: Men Assassinated as Warning to Christians
Sources: New York Times, Morning Star News, The Nigerian Voice
Keith China Nanjing - Page 4 Mail?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.vomcanada.com%2Fimages%2Fcountries%2Fnigeria%2Fng-executed-warning-youtube-sm
A Nigerian terrorist group released a video on July 22nd showing five men lined up for execution. The group included three humanitarian aid workers who disappeared last month, along with a security guard and a state employee.
In the 35-second video, the captors address "all those being used by infidels to convert Muslims to Christianity," threatening the country's Christians with the same fate as their abducted victims if they continue evangelizing. The video ends with at least four of the men being shot to death; however, the fate of the fifth is uncertain due to conflicting reports.
According to an unnamed witness, two of the aid workers and the security guard were Christians. It is believed that the terrorists responsible for this crime are from a splinter group of Boko Haram known as the "Islamic State West Africa Province" or "Khalifa."
The governor of Borno State, Babagana Umara Zulum, has expressed his condolences and pledged to continue seeking ways to end the violence. Further information on the suffering inflicted upon Nigeria's Christians is available here.
Remember the family and friends of those who have been killed in this horrific incident. Pray that those responsible for the executions will be located by the authorities and thus held accountable for their actions. May governing officials throughout Nigeria dedicate themselves to the ending of terrorist violence which has caused numerous casualties, the destruction of multiple homes and villages, and so much unnecessary heartache for thousands of injured and displaced victims.

REPORT UPDATE

PAKISTAN: Pregnant Teen Confined to a Single Room
Sources: Aid to the Church in Need, Independent Catholic News
Keith China Nanjing - Page 4 Mail?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.vomcanada.com%2Fimages%2Fcountries%2Fpakistan%2Fpk-huma-younas
In October 2019, 14-year-old Huma Younus was kidnapped from her home, forcibly converted to Islam, and then married to her kidnapper (read more). Since the abduction, her parents have been working on her behalf, seeking to annul the marriage, which by law is forbidden before the age of 18 without parental permission.
Court hearings have been previously delayed. The one scheduled for July 13th was postponed because the courtroom was shut down due to COVID-19. According to the lawyer assisting the family, Huma has been able to contact them by phone. He reports that she is now pregnant. When asked if there was a way to depart from the residence where she is being held hostage, Huma said that she is confined to one room and not permitted to leave.
The girl's abductor, Abdul Jabbar, has a brother who is a member of the armed forces. This brother has threatened the lives of Huma's family, stating that he would kill anyone who tries to help them. Jabbar's lawyer has used every means possible to delay the court proceedings. If the decision is delayed for three more years, it will likely be dismissed when she turns 18.
Please continue to pray for Huma's safety and eventual release. In the meantime, may God administer emotional, physical and spiritual strength to this teen and her distraught family. Also pray for the many other young girls in Pakistan who are facing similar situations, that they will reflect the character of Christ in their lives -- even while waiting for deliverance from captivity -- so their captors will surrender their lives to Him and do what is honorable in His sight.
If you would like to post a prayer of praise or petition on behalf of our persecuted family around the globe, visit VOMC's prayer wall.
