Jews During the Holocaust
When Jews during the Holocaust tried to escape and gain entry into countries around the world, many turned them away. It is such a heartbreaking truth that the Jewish people needed refuge, and nation after nation sent men, women, and children right back to the Nazis to be killed. We are talking about innocent people who were slaughtered in cold blood. Why didn’t the world help? Why did so many turn a blind eye to the atrocities taking place? Although it is so unbearable to think about that, we cannot forget the one country that opened their doors and saved many Jews.

The Philippines
One special nation across the world from Germany accepted the Jewish people and gave them protection. The Philippines, under the leadership of President Manuel L Quezon, could not stand by and watch an innocent nation be destroyed. He wanted to help. He felt it was the “right thing to do.” Quezon wondered why other countries did not help. Over 1300 Jewish people were saved because of Quezon’s courage and bravery to do the right thing when everyone else would not.

Saving an Entire World
In the Talmud it says that whoever saves one life, it is as if he saved an entire world. It makes so much sense. Imagine how many Jews are alive today because 1300 Jews were saved during the Holocaust by one man. Children, grandchildren, great-grand children. Saving one person means saving their future offspring as well.

The Jewish nation is forever grateful to people like President Quezon who did everything in their power to help during the Holocaust.

Jewish News has teamed up with Chelsea Football Club has to launch an exhibition honouring Jewish Olympic athletes murdered in the Holocaust.
The 49 Flames initiative, composed of portraits illustrated by British-Israeli street artist Solomon Souza, tells the extraordinary stories of 15 sports-men and women who perished during the Shoah.
The Blues’ manager Frank Lampard, who introduced the virtual exhibition in a video made by the club alongside Emma Hayes, the Chelsea Women’s manager, said it “brings back some of the darkest moments of our history, and reminds us that all parts of society, including Sport, were affected”.

The initiative tells the stories of cousins Alfred and Gustav Felix Flatow, German Jewish Gold medallists at the first modern Olympics held in Athens in 1896, who both died of starvation in Theresienstadt.
It recalls the plight of German Jewish track and field athlete Lilli Henoch, who set 4 world records and won 10 German national championships, in four different disciplines. In 1942, Lilli and her mother were deported to Riga where they both perished.

It shines a light on chess player Salo Landau, Roman Kantor a Polish Olympic épée fencer and world champion table tennis player Gertrude Kleinova.

It also features contributions from Holocaust educators, Jewish News editor Richard Ferrer, Israel’s president Reuven Rivlin, human rights activist Natan Sharansky, the government’s antisemitism adviser Lord John Mann, and Holocaust survivor Sir Ben Helfgott, a champion weightlifter who captained the British Olympic team.

This comes after Chelsea, with the backing of its Israeli-Russian owner Roman Abramovich, launched a campaign in January 2018 called ‘Say No To Antisemitism’.

As part of its initiative to root out racism at the club, it sent a delegation to the March of the Living in Poland, played a fixture against New England Revolution in the US to raise money for causes fighting antisemitism, and agreed to host a conference on tackling Jew-hatred.

In march of this year, a 12-metre mural by Souza was displayed at the club’s home ground, Stamford Bridge, depicting three former footballers who were imprisoned by the Nazis, including Julius Hirsch, the first German Jew to be capped by his country – before he was murdered in Auschwitz, British prisoner of war Ron Jones and Hungarian, Arpad Weisz.

Frank Lampard, Manager of Chelsea, said: “Sports has an enormous power to unite people and by sharing the stories of these athletes, we hope to inspire future generations to always fight against antisemitism, discrimination and racism, wherever they find it.”

Emma Hayes, Manager Chelsea FC Women’s manager backed the project, saying: “This is so important as we know that sport has not been immune to the horrors of the past. This exhibition brings back some of the darkest moments of our history.

“We see the Holocaust through the eyes of male and female athletes from around the world. The stories of Jewish athletes such as Lilli Henoch, Anna Dresden-Polak and Gertrude Kleinova remind us why we as a club and individual sports professionals can never take our freedoms for granted.

Last month, Hayes interviewed Ruth Bourne, a Jewish veteran who worked at Bletchley Park, which was instrumental in deciphering the Nazis’ secret ‘enigma’ code.

Chelsea was among 19 clubs – in addition to the Premier League itself – to adopt the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance definition of antisemitism, last week. Only Sheffield United declined to back the move.

If only the world saw this. If only the mainstream media showed the true face of the IDF. Israeli soldiers are humans. They are not barbaric. They do not go on killing sprees. It may seem like something insignificant, but it shows something crucial: The IDF is not evil. They value life and do not hate the “Palestinian” people. All that Israel wants is to live peacefully in its historic and Biblical homeland.
Yes, the IDF can and must defend its people and country against terrorism. But that doesn’t mean that they are war machines or murderers. They are brave defenders who wish they didn’t have to fight.
Hebron gets a lot of negative media attention. It is portrayed as a place of violence and apartheid. But the truth about Hebron is that it is an ancient, Biblical Jewish area. And currently, the Jewish people only have control of 3% of it. Yes, 3%. The “Palestinians” control 97%. And who is not allowed onto the other side? The Jews are not allowed on the Arab side. That is the only apartheid taking place. Arabs are allowed in that 3% of Hebron that Jews have control of.
It is important to see that there are moments in this area that are not contentious. There are simple and peaceful moments like the one shown in this video. It shows what could be when violent Muslim extremists are not around to act violently.

The United Nations was once a place that helped an ancient people return to its ancient homeland. They helped Israel create its modern state in the 1947 vote.
If you looked at the UN today, you would never know that it is the same organization that once voted FOR Israel. Now, the UN has been hijacked by the world’s worst dictatorships. The world’s worse human rights abusers have put the international world in danger. Not only are they trying to murder Israel, but the United Nations is made up of countries that torture their own people.
If the body that was created to ensure the safety of the international world is now being taken over by the very countries they were supposed to protect the world from, what is the point of it?
UN Watch is Saving the World
UN Watch works hard to save the world from the dictators of the UN. It gives dissidents a voice. It gives those who have been silenced by their countries a voice to speak up and share the truth. Without UN Watch, many more people would suffer.

It is truly a shame that there even needs to be an organization like UN Watch to stop the UN from all its immoral decisions. The hypocrisy and double standard that takes place in that agency is despicable. Their main focus is targeting Israel, but as the few of many examples in this video showed, the United Nations also discriminates against other peaceful people. Democracy and human rights must prevail. If the UN continues to allow itself to be a place where tyranny and abuse is the norm, the future of the international world is in grave danger.

Prince Charles, former Prime Ministers Tony Blair and Gordon Brown and Israeli President Reuven Rivlin were among a series of world leaders who hailed the legacy of the late former Chief Rabbi, Lord Jonathan Sacks, in an online memorial event on Sunday evening.

Religious leaders including current Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis, the Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby and Israel’s former Ashkenazi Chief Rabbi, Yisrael Meir Lau, also spoke about Rabbi Sacks’ legacy.


The tribute – in which Rabbi Sacks was widely described as a “teacher” by global leaders – was held to coincide with the end of the ‘Shloshim’, the 30-day period of mourning since Rabbi Sacks died last month aged 72 after being diagnosed with cancer.

President Trump has made one of his basic policies the firm belief that China is the most dangerous foe to the United States and the free world. This has not been the viewpoint of previous Presidents or Republican candidates for President. Mitt Romney clearly stated that he viewed Russia as the #1 strategic foe. Barack Obama rarely focused on China as a threat. This was a unique viewpoint that Donald Trump the candidate espoused as part of his America-first economics and trade-oriented foreign policy.

Due to the horrible effects of the coronavirus and President Trump’s harping on what he calls the “China virus,” most North Americans today would probably agree that China is the main threat. They are both an economic and military threat. Any country that has the most money, with the largest military, and the production of the vast majority of goods in the world that the West has grown addicted to, has truly amassed a huge amount of power.

What can be done to combat this? This is the $64,000 question. President Trump has advanced policies that shift the trade imbalance back to strengthening the United States manufacturing base. This is certainly a good move – especially on things such as pharmaceuticals. But will that be enough? Almost definitely not. If there is one thing that multilateralism is important for, it should be to contain the threat from China. When one bully gains too much strength, the key is to sideline the bully as much as possible. China is perhaps the wealthiest country in the world, but they lose their power to the extent that the buying countries do not cooperate with them. The reason this is so difficult to combat is the enormous power of big tech, and big tech’s cooperation with China. This will require nerves of steel from politicians who will probably lose much of their support if they confront the power of big tech and China head on. But, let us not make the mistake of thinking that big tech and China will become less powerful if we ignore the threat. The gorilla will only get larger if we keep feeding it bananas.

Former Foreign Secretary David Miliband has admitted that watching the situation in the Labour Party today was “frustrating”, mixed with “admiration for those fighting an incredibly good fight”. 
Speaking to an audience of more than 300 at the Jewish Labour Movement’s one-day conference, Mr Miliband, who is now chief executive of the New York-based International Rescue Committee, took part in a wide-ranging discussion with journalist Jonathan Freedland in a conversation he had designated “The Age of Impunity”.
By this, he said, he meant “the abuse of power to the extent where crimes are not punished… the power balance has got out of whack in war zones around the world. And that is linked to the retreat from democratic values, where countries have suffered a reduction in domestic political freedoms. At the international level there has also been a retreat from democratic norms”. 
 Mr Miliband noted that in America, “a re-elected President Trump would have been given impunity to take things further”. But he warned that “while Trump may have been defeated, Trumpism has not”, suggesting that there were still elements in the Republican Party which supported Trump’s policies. 

Turning his attention to UK politics and the most recent election defeat of his former party, Mr Miliband emphasised the importance in politics “of an attractive candidate. My party lost with the worst results since 1935. You shouldn’t need a Biden victory to tell you that you are more likely to win with an attractive candidate rather than one who pushes away the voters: Jeremy Corbyn repelled voters left, right and centre.”

Politics of the left, he said, required people to be “both radical and credible. Unless you get both, you’re not going to get people to put their faith in you”. He believed “a broad coalition” was “absolutely key to being able to govern.” 
He said that “never in my wildest nightmares, in any of the arguments I had with the hard Left, did I ever dream that we would argue about antisemitism. Maybe I was naive. I don’t think people ever looked at me and said, oh, there’s a Jewish Foreign Secretary: I think they said, oh, there’s a Labour Foreign Secretary who is Jewish, which is different. So the idea that this has become the hill on which the hard Left wants to fight is repugnant.” 

Mr Miliband declared: “People say to me, we’ve got to deal with antisemitism because it’s offending the Jewish community. No! we’ve got to stop antisemitism because it’s offending everyone. Never did I think the words ‘Labour’ and ‘antisemitism’ would be in the same sentence”. 

On Brexit and the choices facing the Labour Party, Mr Miliband said he thought there would ultimately be a deal, but that Labour could only vote in favour of it, or abstain. “Brexit is not going to be done [with this vote],” he warned, “there will be negotiations between Britain and the international system for a long time to come.” 

Asked by Jonathan Freedland if he could predict circumstances under which Labour might seek to re-join the European Union, Mr Miliband said this was “a frog-boiling situation, not a leap off a cliff situation”. But, he added, Labour could not accept a future “where the Tories winning four elections on the trot is business as usual. It’s our fault that it’s business as usual” — but that it was possible to change that dynamic.

The shadow foreign secretary, Lisa Nandy, yesterday confirmed Labour’s opposition to both the BDS movement and settlements in the occupied territories.

Speaking during the Jewish Labour Movement’s One Day Conference, Nandy said: “We are opposed to the settlements. We believe they are not just a breach of international law, but by changing the facts on the ground they make a two-state solution more distanced than it would otherwise be.


“We’ve repeatedly urged the Israeli coalition Government not only to stop the settlement building, but also to drop their plans around annexation.”

The former chair of Labour Friends of Palestine added: “We’re not in favour of boycotts or the BDS (boycotts, divestments and sanctions) movement- I never have been actually. I’ve always felt that the best way to advance the situation is to take people with you. BDS pushes people away instead of bringing people together.

“What we’re trying to do is fight for the rights of people for safety, security and dignity, and also to unravel some of the harm that has been done. We want to create the context in which progress is possible.”

In July, Nandy controversially suggested that if Netanyahu’s Government pressed ahead with annexation plans, then the UK should block goods from the occupied territories.

The Wigan MP also told delegates about being inspired by her grandad who, as a Liberal MP, always felt very strongly about the establishment of Israel and played a small role in that process.

On antisemitism in the Labour Party, Nandy said: “The processes really matter and an independent process is absolutely essential. What I saw happen over the last few years was that by failing to take action, particularly on high profile cases of antisemitism, a green light was given to antisemites to find a natural home in the Labour Party.

“If you don’t create a culture that is not only welcoming to Jewish people, but also actively hostile to racism then you’re in a very bad place indeed.”

This headline may seem like it has come in the End of Days. Yes – an Arab country has congratulated Israel’s Prime Minister for his nomination to win the Nobel Peace Prize. In truth, the leadership of the Arab country, the United Arab Emirates, also deserves it. But, for internal reasons within their country, they may not want it. The last time an Arab leader of a country made peace with Israel, it was King Hussein of Jordan. It was done with relatively little fanfare. Nothing then happened to King Hussein. But prior to that, Anwar Sadat came to Israel, spoke in the Knesset, and made peace with Israel in a very public way. The story dominated the airwaves of all of the news channels for many months. Anwar Sadat was assassinated within a few years afterwards.

It takes a lot of courage for an Arab country to make peace with Israel. For many decades, the anti-Israel rhetoric has become somewhat second-nature when discussing the State of Israel. But Israel’s economic and military strength have convinced enough of it’s intractable fores, that perhaps it’s time to put their swords down. The incentives for economic prosperity are too overwhelming for moderate Arab countries like the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain. They understand that the main threat they have is Iran and radicalized Islam within their midst. By strengthening their economies and warming up to the West and Israel, they open up their economies to even more growth. More importantly, they strengthen the movement to isolate Iran as the powerful bully in the region that everyone is united against. Bahrain and the UAE look at Syria, and they see how Iran has wreaked total havoc there in order to centralize it’s hold on Syria. They see how Lebanon has basically been a mess for decades, with Iranian backed militias basically setting up a country within the country.

It is a wise choice for the moderate,yet wealthy Arab countries to switch to the Western side – at least on the economic level. They have not shed their Muslim religion – at least not publicly – and they are able to straddle their connection with the West with their business ties to the Soviet Union, China, and other major economies. But, the main point is they have shed their focus on the Arab-Israeli conflict as a central issue in their foreign policy. The Middle East has indeed become a much more peaceful oasis in what has historically been one of the most conflict filled areas in the world. If Benjamin Netanyahu does not deserve the Nobel Peace Prize, who does?

Labour’s deputy leader Angela Rayner has promised to suspend “thousands and thousands” of party members unless they “get real” about antisemitism.

Speaking during the Jewish Labour Movement’s virtual One Day Conference, she warned Labour members:


“If they think making people feel unsafe or unwelcome in our meetings is a response to the Equalities and Human Rights Commission (EHRC), report, then they need to be out of our party immediately.

“We should have some humility and humbleness, and we should be listening and aware of how hurt and upset people are.

“If I have to suspend thousands and thousands of members, we will do that.”

Rayner’s unequivocal pledge came as she confirmed there had been suspensions following a Nottingham East Constituency Labour Party meeting on Friday, in which party rules were broken after a motion calling for the restoration of the whip to Jeremy Corbyn was passed.

Addressing Corbyn’s reaction to the EHRC report, Rayner delivered a blistering attack on the former Leader for his “totally unacceptable” comments, adding that “any attempts to downplay the issue of antisemitism are part of the issue.”

“I don’t think Jeremy quite gets how really upsetting it is when he made those comments.

“I understand that he thinks he’s always tackled issues of antisemitism and racism, but on this he’s wrong. He has to accept as a leader that we failed.”

In October, the EHRC’s report into Labour’s antisemitism crisis concluded that there were “unlawful acts of harassment and discrimination for which the Labour Party is responsible.”

Mr Corbyn was thereafter suspended by the party for claiming that “the scale of the problem was… dramatically overstated for political reasons by our opponents”.

Alan Dershowitz is very well known. Although his Liberal friends think he is too Conservative, he does not identify as a Republican. He is, in fact, a Liberal lawyer; part of the Democratic party.

But no matter who he wants to win any election, he wants it to be done according to the legal process. As should every American. He wants the Constitution to be upheld, as should every American.


Dershowitz knows what he is talking about. He is well aware of law, history, and current events. You might disagree with him, but he is speaking on the basis of facts and reality. He is speaking on the legal side – things of which people have never even heard about.

Elections are not simple. There are so many factors. But no matter what, the law has to be followed. The Constitution has to be protected. Dershowitz might be wrong about Trump losing or he might be right. But the point is, that whatever happens should be by the books. It should be legitimate. And if there is one message to take from all of this, it is that the law matters and must be protected. When it is not, law-abiding citizens have every right to challenge the situation.

The Electoral College is a brilliant part of the system of government of the United States. The point of abolishing the electoral college is for the Democratic Party to take over the country – once and for all. If the electoral college is lost, then the Democratic Party will change the rules in such a way that their dominance will be permanent. So argues Mark Levin. He has a point, and it is rather scary.

The truth is that even if Democrats do try to abolish the electoral college and pack the Supreme Court, they will fail. The country is indeed not yet ready to jump over the edge as Mark Levin argues. The Democratic Party is going far-left and deep into the land of progressive and socialist thought. But, that is not true about the entire party. The Democratic Party has many reasonable members in the House and the Senate, and they will simply not vote to pack the court or to change the electoral college. They are Senators and Representatives of smaller States or States with smaller populations. They understand well that a decision to drop the idea of the electoral college is a decision to place all of the power in the big cities across the USA.

This will not happen in the short-term future. But the scary thing is that this idea is even being thrown around as a reasonable idea. The most important reason to be optimistic is that the United States has built-in checks and balances. The most important reason to be pessimistic is that so many of the cities of the United States are losing control of law and order – from the top down and the bottom up.


There is indeed much to be concerned about. But it is not as urgent as some argue. Even if Joe Biden does end up as the President, the sky will not fall the day after. Many warned like that after Obama was elected and then reelected. Those overstatements turned out to be fear mongering.

Israeli scientists have claimed a major breakthrough in the fight against cancer after using Nobel Prize winning technology to destroy cancerous cells in mice, leaving everything around them intact.
In what researchers have called a world first, the study from Tel Aviv University suggests the CRISPR Cas-9 gene editing system, which allows scientists to make precise alterations to DNA, can be used like “tiny scissors” to target and treat cancer in animals.


The technology, which gained its creators the Nobel Prize for Chemistry this year, was examined by cancer expert Professor Dan Peer, who said that there are “no side effects” from the process.

“This technology can extend the life expectancy of cancer patients and we hope, one day, cure the disease”, Prof. Peer said after his peer-reviewed research was published in the Science Advances journal.

“If we can use this technology, then within three treatments we can destroy a tumour. This technology can physically cut the DNA in cancerous cells, and those cells will not survive.”

Peer told the Times of Israel that there are hopes the process will eventually replace chemotherapy – a technique that, unlike the process used in the Tel Aviv study, is administered to the whole body.
His research involved hundreds of mice with two of the most aggressive types of cancer – glioblastoma, a brain cancer, and metastatic ovarian cancer.
The mice who received treatment were found to have double the life expectancy of the control group, with a 30 percent higher survival rate for glioblastoma and an 80 percent higher survival rate for metastatic ovarian cancer.
Peer said that his team plan to develop the treatment for all cancers and that the technique could be ready to use on humans within two years.
Treatment would be personalised to each patient based on a biopsy which would determine whether they received a general injection or an injection directly into the tumour.
“”It will probably take some time before the new treatment can be used in humans, but we are optimistic”, Professor Peer said.
“When we first spoke of treatments with mRNA twelve years ago, people thought it was science fiction.
“I believe that in the near future, we will see many personalized treatments based on genetic messengers – for both cancer and genetic diseases.”

The government is to allow places of worship to reopen when the second national lockdown ends.This comes as new details of coronavirus restrictions for England are set to be revealed by Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Monday – amid the expiration of the second lockdown on 2 December.
The winter strategy will enter into force next month and will include a strengthened three-tier system of local restrictions.

The government will allow congregational worship at churches, synagogues, mosques and temples – regardless of which tier they are in – but with Covid-compliant rules.
Responding to the news, Chief Rabbi Mirvis said: “The news that places of worship in England will be permitted to open for congregational worship once again when this period of lockdown ends on 2nd December will be widely welcomed by people of all faiths.
“I am grateful to the government for their work with us on this issue.”
Jo Grose, United Synagogue’s Communities Director, said: “We understand from government that places of worship will be permitted once again to hold services when the latest lockdown is lifted.
“We are yet to receive the exact details from government and as usual will not be able to issue guidance to our communities until we understand precisely what is permitted.
“We will be communicating with our shuls as usual to ensure they are able to plan accordingly, but this is good news and we look forward to re-opening again safely when the time is right.”
Rabbi Charley Baginsky, Interim Director of Liberal Judaism, commented that the movement will “wait to see what the evidence is and what the guidelines are before giving any definitive answers. Our communities are also autonomous and will make the appropriate arrangements that work for their demographic and within local tiers.
“However, we have been doing training and facilitating discussions on hybrid services, so that all of our communities feel as prepared as possible to carry out a range of hybrid services if and when that is apt. As always, our primary values are those of pikur nefesh and inclusion. All our communities look to balance these values online, in person and in hybrid and we will continue to support them in finding that balance and path forward.
Meanwhile, Marie van der Zyl of the Board of Deputies of British Jews said:  “We welcome the decision to allow places of worship to reopen following the current lockdown period.
“Since the announcement about this lockdown in England, we have been in dialogue with the Government and Public Health England about the data around places of worship, as our understanding is that where faith premises have made sure to meticulously observe social distancing regulations, there has been a minimal number of outbreaks associated with communal worship.
“Last week, we organised meetings for all the Jewish religious authorities with Public Health England and were in dialogue at the highest levels of government on the issue. While this is positive news, we continue to remind people to take great care in observing health guidelines, so we can all play our part to stop the spread and save lives.”

Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman discussed the possibility of normalizing relations between their two countries, a senior Saudi official said, though substantial agreement was reached on the subject during the hours-long meeting Sunday night.

According to a report by the Wall Street Journal Monday, one of the senior Saudi advisers familiar with the talks said that the meeting between Netanyahu and the Crown Prince in Neom, Saudi Arabia lasted a couple of hours, and centered on the possibility of normalizing ties between Israel and Saudi Arabia, as well as concerns over Iran.

Netanyahu and Mossad chief Yossi Cohen flew to Saudi Arabia at approximately 10:00 p.m. Sunday night onboard a private aircraft owned by Israeli businessman Ehud 'Udi' Angel.

Joined by US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, the three met with the Saudi Crown Prince in Neom, Saudi Arabia for clandestine talks.

Both the Israeli Prime Minister’s Office and the Saudi Foreign Ministry declined to comment on the meeting.

Foreign Office decision to list the holy city as separate to Israel branded ‘absolutely inappropriate’ by the Board of Deputies
The Board of Deputies has criticised Whitehall mandarins as “absolutely inappropriate” after Israel and Jerusalem were listed separately as places from which visitors to the UK will no longer need to quarantine.

The angry reaction followed an announcement on Thursday from the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) regarding its weekly update on Covid-related travel corridors.


Jerusalem is listed separately because it includes East Jerusalem, which both Israelis and Palestinians claim, and whose status under international law remains that of an occupied territory.

However, the Board tweeted its feelings after ‘Israel’ and ‘Jerusalem’ both appeared in a list of countries as bullet points on the government’s website.

“Absolutely inappropriate to list ‘Jerusalem’ as a separate country,” it tweeted. “We have taken this up with the FCDO this morning and they are urgently reviewing it.”

On its website, the FCDO said it “no longer advises against all but essential travel to Israel, and no longer advises against all but essential travel to Jerusalem (including to East Jerusalem (Occupied Palestinian Territories)). Israel, and Jerusalem are both now on the list of countries and territories where self-isolation is not required on return to England, Wales, and Northern Ireland.”

Conservative Friends of Israel Parliamentary Chairmen Stephen Crabb, Lord Eric Pickles (Lords), and Honorary President Lord Polak urged the government to make an immediate correction to the advice about Jerusalem.

“The announcement of a travel corridor with Israel is excellent news. However, the FCDO’s decision to define Jerusalem as a territory separate from Israel is offensive and hostile.

“Jerusalem is the capital of Israel. To describe Jerusalem as anything other than an integral part of Israel is a fiction divorced from reality and the travel advice must be immediately corrected”.

A campaign to donate a life-saving vehicle for Israel in memory of Lord Sacks is launched today by Jewish News and MDA UK.
The initiative seeks to raise £135,000 to purchase the first of a new batch of bloodmobiles which will transport teams to collect some of the 1,100 units each day that keep the country’s blood supply full. Bearing the name of the former chief rabbi, it will eventually find a home at the new British-funded Blood and Logistics Centre, which is due to open next year.


MDA UK described Lord Sacks, who passed away last week aged just 72, as a long-time “champion” of the charity and revealed £18,000 had already been pledged before the campaign was publicly launched. Chief Executive Daniel Burger said: “Eighty percent of Israel’s blood supplies are collected remotely and the current fleet is up to 19 years old and some are close to being beyond economic repair.  In addition, as Israel’s population and tourist population grows, MDA needs to increase its blood inventory in line with this growth and therefore these new vehicles play an essential part in this growth.

Former prime minister Tony Blair, who has hailed Lord Sacks as “my hero” who enhanced hios knowledge about the place of Israel for Jews, told Jewish News: “This would be a fitting tribute to Rabbi Sacks, a truly exceptional man and humanitarian.”
A spokesperson for Lord Sacks’ family said: “This is a wonderful initiative and one which is hugely meaningful to all the family. In the maelstrom and vitriol that followed the Equality and Human Rights Commission’s damning report into the Labour Party under Jeremy Corbyn last month, few noticed the near total omission in the response from the Jewish community of the very word the EHRC had just reported on: ‘Antisemitism’.

In a joint statement, the Board of Deputies and the Jewish Leadership Council said the report “disgraces those who attacked us for speaking out against anti-Jewish racism”, calling Jeremy Corbyn “a figurehead for old and new anti-Jewish attitudes”.


The Jewish Labour Movement said it had been warning of a “deepening casual culture of anti-Jewish racism” since 2015. The Holocaust Educational Trust said it confirmed “the depth of the endemic anti-Jewish racism in Labour”.

Labour Friends of Israel praised Keir Starmer for starting “to root out anti-Jewish racism”. Even Labour Against Antisemitism (LAAS) distanced itself from its own name, talking about the party’s “institutional anti-Jewish racism”.

Commentators soon picked up the baton. In his searing column, Jonathan Freedland of the Guardian began with ‘antisemitism’ but ended up asking “why anti-Jewish racism might take root”.

Yet the change was already underway. In September, the Union of Jewish Students slammed universities for “failing to sufficiently protect their Jewish students from anti-Jewish racism, the oldest form of racial hatred”.

Later that month, the Antisemitism Policy Trust – which may now need renaming – said Microsoft’s chatterbot had “learned from its social media interactions to post anti-Jewish racism”.

Two weeks ago, it even seemed to have filtered through to the BBC, its news site saying Labour had “failed to stamp out anti-Jewish racism when Jeremy Corbyn was leader”. Goodbye old Jew hatred; hello new rebranded one.

Some may see this as odd, given all the fights it took to get here. For a start, there was the heave-ho over the infamous dash – aka The Battle of the Hyphen – when ‘anti-Semitism’ faced off against ‘antisemitism’.

Then there was the scrap over ‘what antisemitism is’, with criticism of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) working definition giving way to a slow acceptance across the UK.

Yet odd it is not, because the switch to “anti-Jewish racism” is neither natural evolution nor incidental lexicography, as evidenced in the Jewish Leadership Council (JLC)’s annual financial filings, published online last month.

Going back a couple of years, as Labour’s antisemitism woes began to resonate both in the media and throughout Westminster, the JLC said it “took the opportunity to educate not just those involved in politics but the wider public”.

It held eight focus groups, with the help of Gabriel Milland and Public First, and conducted polls from the end of 2018 and through 2019 which “proved hugely beneficial to our understanding of the penetration of the issue amongst the public, as well as what successful messaging looked like”.

Enlighteningly, it says: “One example is the shift from the term antisemitism – a word with absolutely no recognition in one focus group – to the more recognised notion of ‘anti-Jewish racism’. We have made a concerted effort to use this language.”

Here it was, then: recognition that this is a purposeful change, because the word ‘antisemitism’ had in some cases “absolutely no recognition” from the public. What it meant, in other words, often meant nothing.

A spokesman says the focus groups were held in Dudley, South Manchester, Putney and Croydon, “to avoid major centres of Jewish life” but also to have a good UK spread, and that they showed huge differences.

“In Croydon, despite it being nowhere near any big Jewish communities, everyone had met a Jewish person,” he says. “In Dudley, only one person had.”

The organisation went all in on research – its YouGov poll sampled 5,000. It also polled the Jewish community through Survation “to ensure we fully understood the levels of concern”. It then shared its work with communal organisations.

JLC joint chief executive Claudia Mendoza calls it “the most substantial public opinion research into Labour’s antisemitism crisis”, adding that “there were some striking findings, most notably a lack of understanding” of the term ‘antisemitism’.

“Using this understanding we successfully shifted the terminology used towards ‘anti-Jewish racism’, in no way to downplay the uniqueness of antisemitism, but to ensure that no one misunderstood our grave concerns,” she says.

Others were engaged – and wholly onboard. “We suspected that the public basically didn’t know what the word ‘antisemitism’ means,” says Mark Gardner, chief executive of the Community Security Trust, the charity charged with defending British Jews from antisemitism. “But the research showed that it was a deeper problem than we had realised.”

To some, this is less revelatory. Danny Stone, chief executive of the Antisemitism Policy Trust, cites a 2014 UCL poll in which 68 percent of almost 8,000 respondents were unfamiliar with the term antisemitism, and/or unaware of its meaning.

“It’s no surprise that Jewish groups want to talk about ‘anti-Jewish racism’, as we’re doing. I think it’s quite helpful, because antisemitism is a complex word,” he says. “I know of some people saying ‘antisemitism, what does that mean?’ Not only the understanding of the word, but it’s spelling can also be contentious.”

He recalls moves at the UN to widen the meaning of ‘antisemitism’ to include all Semitic peoples, but Semitism “legitimises a form of pseudo-scientific racial classification thoroughly discredited by association with Nazi ideology”, showing how the word ‘antisemitism’ can be “mis-used and played upon”.

The Board of Deputies’ public affairs director Phil Rosenberg goes further, describing how the changed communal tack is as much a response to those with political agendas as to those with none.

“It stems from two things,” he says. “First, there can be a lack of knowledge. Whilst racism is widely understood, not everyone knows that antisemitism is a form of racism.

“Second, some on the far-left tried to claim that ‘real’ racism was worse than antisemitism. They also insinuated that we were claiming antisemitism to be more important than other forms of racism.

“By using the term ‘anti-Jewish racism’ we remove their ability to do that by being clear that antisemitism is a form of racism and is not in competition with any other form of prejudice.”

Is this a trend? Five years hence, will we all be speaking ‘anti-Jewish racism’? “Not really,” says Stone. “If they find it has better cut-through you may see Jewish groups using it more, but I’d be surprised if the language developed in that way.”

Is it a case of in-speak and out-speak? Is there talk of ‘anti-Jewish racism’ to a non-Jewish audience and ‘antisemitism’ to a Jewish audience? “No, I mix it up,” he says. But the driver is foremost because ‘anti-Jewish racism’ cannot be misunderstood? “Exactly.”

JERUSALEM, Israel – Israeli leaders are calling on CNN anchor Christiane Amanpour to apologize for comments she made comparing President Donald Trump’s actions to Kristallnacht, a Nazi pogrom against Jews in 1938 widely seen as a key starting point for the Holocaust.

“This week, 82 years ago, Kristallnacht happened,” Amanpour said Thursday at the beginning of her CNN’s foreign affairs program. “It was the Nazis’ warning shot across the bow of our human civilization that led to genocide against a whole identity and in that tower of burning books, it led to an attack of fact, knowledge, history, and truth.”

In response, Israel’s consul-general to Atlanta, Anat Sultan-Dadon, wrote a letter to Richard Davis, CNN’s executive vice president of News Standards and Practices on Sunday demanding an apology from Amanpour and the network. CNN is based in Atlanta.

Decades from now, the 2020 election may be viewed as the election that changed the way that elections are fun in the United States of America. Donald Trump may be able to retain power, or he may not. But it seems very probable that there will be massive distrust in the electoral system – on a level that has not been seen in our lifetime. Donald Trump may not be the perfect person to rebuild a broken system. But he may be the right person to scream that the system is broken and needs to be fixed.


As the corona vaccine spreads across America, more and more people will not be scared to go out and protest. Most everyone feels too cooped up at home. If there was ever a cause to fight for, the pro-Trump and anti-Trump movements will feel that this is their time. Get ready for what may become one of the rockiest winters in a long time in the United States of America. Change is hard, and especially when it means that extremely powerful groups are about to lose their grip on enormous power.

Veteran entertainer Des O'Connor with his CBE at Buckingham Palace
Entertainer Des O’Connor has died at the age of 88 – days after a fall at his home.
The TV star died on Saturday, his longtime agent and family friend Pat Lake-Smith said.
Born in Stepney in 1932 to a Jewish mother and Irish father, the entertainer used to joke that he was the only O’Connor who ever had a Bar Mitzvah.

She said in a statement to the PA news agency that the “ultimate entertainer” had been recovering from the fall when he died.

“It is with great sorrow that I confirm that Des O’Connor passed away yesterday,” she said.

“He had been admitted to hospital just over a week ago, following a fall at his home in Buckinghamshire.

“He was recovering well and had been in great spirits, visited by his family – in accordance with hospital lockdown regulations – and looking forward to going home.

“Unfortunately yesterday evening his condition suddenly deteriorated and he drifted peacefully away in his sleep.”

O’Connor presented his own prime-time TV shows for over 45 years.

He was known for shows like Today With Des And Mel and Des O’Connor Tonight.

His agent said: “Des, who was 88, was so well loved by absolutely everyone. He was a joy to work with – he was talented, fun, positive, enthusiastic, kind and a total professional.

“He loved life, and considered enthusiasm almost as important as oxygen. He adored his family – they were everything to him. He is survived by his wife Jodie, their son Adam and his four daughters, Karin, TJ, Samantha and Kristina.

“Jodie’s world is shattered, she and Adam and Des’s daughters are hurting more than you could possibly imagine.

“Des was the ultimate entertainer.

“He loved being on stage – entertaining a live audience. He always said the sound of laughter was like the sound of heavenly music.

“He had a fabulous international TV career, presenting his own prime-time TV shows for over 45 years. On stage he starred at almost every leading venue throughout the world.”

O’Connor launched his showbiz career in the mid-1950s and first began fronting his own TV show in 1963.

The four-times married star has appeared on stages around the world including hundreds of shows at the London Palladium.

He had his own US TV programme and his chat show Des O’Connor Tonight was a British television staple for a quarter of a century.

He also hosted Channel 4 quiz show Countdown with Carol Vorderman, with the pair bowing out together in 2008.

Aged 75 in 2007, he married singer-songwriter Jodie Brooke Wilson, then 38, four years after he first proposed and 17 years after they first got together.

They had a son three years before the wedding.

He had four daughters from his three previous marriages.

His singing career saw him sell 16 million records and spend 117 weeks in top 10 of the charts.

O’Connor was made a CBE for his services to entertainment and broadcasting.
