Dan Sacker, Joanna Benarroch and Debby Ifield find the words beyond the tears after losing an inspiring boss, mentor and friend.
When we were asked to write something about our boss Rabbi Sacks, the truth is that we weren’t sure we could.

We didn’t know if it was possible to find the words beyond the tears and we apologise now because this piece, try as we may, will not do him justice.

His passing, too sudden, too soon, when there was so much work still to do, has left a gaping hole in so many people’s lives.

We find it so difficult to comprehend a world without him in it. It doesn’t seem fair, it doesn’t make sense, and we don’t think it will for a very long time to come.

Rabbi Sacks was a giant of his – or any – generation, a Gadol HaDor, an irreplaceable and irrepressible leader of leaders, and a peerless and wise teacher whose intellectual clarity and moral voice carried such weight across the global Jewish community and far beyond. 

Yet to us, as he was to all who had the privilege of working for him, he was above anything else an inspiring boss, mentor and friend. He was the person who phoned us multiple times a day, sometimes to discuss work-related matters but more often than not just to chat about a new book he’d ordered, a new idea he’d read, a random YouTube music video he’d discovered or to laugh at a good joke he’d heard. 

He was the person we spent our working day with, helping to coordinate and prepare him for his various engagements, draft countless articles and speeches, write and research books and record videos, always challenging us to push boundaries, to never accept things as they were, to utilise every avenue possible to bring his ideas to the world. He was even the person who trusted us enough to tweet and use Facebook on his behalf!

But he was so much more than that. He was the person who quietly, away from the limelight, gave so many individuals, groups, rabbonim or organisations who needed it, and needed him, his most precious thing: time, which he did so willingly, unfailingly and consistently. 
He was the person who quietly advised global leaders, helped mediate other peoples’ problems and offered endless support and guidance to anyone who asked his advice. And he was the person who called us when we had personal traumas or issues to deal with. And called again an hour later to check in. And again an hour after that.

Is this the first time that Ilhan Omar has publicly shared her antisemitic thoughts? Not even close to it. And sadly, it most likely will not be the last. You can argue that maybe she was just misinformed about the situation here. Except that argument does not work for someone like Ilhan Omar. Spreading blood libels like this recent one is the norm for Omar.
She has compared Israel to Iran and to Nazi Germany. She supports the BDS movement which calls for the destruction of the Jewish state.
People do not question Omar like they should. No one cares about the truth or the facts. People who follow her and worship her believe her – no matter how hostile she is toward Israel and the Jewish people. And she knows that she is lying. She purposely spreads the lies and the hate.

It is not only Israel she hates. It is America. She is a dangerous woman!
Did people already forget the way she talked about 9/11 and said, “Some people did something?” Did people already forget the way she laughed in the face of terrorism?
It is truly shameful that she is in the American congress. She is brutal to America and America’s allies. It is enough! Americans have to wake up to how detrimental she is to American society. The truth matters, and more people should want to hear it.

Israel’s recent peace agreements with three Muslim countries require major new assessments of the country’s strategic position. This will have to be carried out in conjunction with a re-verification of its political aims. Yet, very little of this can be seen so far in the Israeli public domain.
It would be a major mistake if in Israel the authorities do not simultaneously reflect on what these changes can mean for the future of the Palestinian Arabs. Only if Israel understands what may happen in the territories of these enemies can it best define its own actions.

Israel: Shin Bet Reveals Hamas Efforts to Recruit Minors for West Bank Attacks

i24 News – The Shin Bet, Israel’s domestic security agency, revealed Monday Hamas’ efforts to recruit minors to conduct terrorist attacks in the West Bank.
According to a press release, in October the Shin Bet arrested two minors living in the West Bank community of Beit Umar.

A subsequent probe revealed that Hamas had recruited the two in an outreach effort stretching across multiple social platforms and lasting several months.
The Shin Bet pointed at Balal Kardi, a Gaza-based member of the Hamas military wing cyber unit, as the recruiter of the two.
According to the Shin Bet, the pair was supposed to receive funds, weaponry and apparel to conduct attacks in the West Bank. The two also reportedly tried manufacturing improvised explosive devices, but with little success.
Hamas had tasked them with a number of assignments, including gathering intelligence on Israeli settlements and Israel Defense Forces troops in the area.
The Gaza terrorist group also wanted the minors to set up a shooting attack and an abduction of an Israeli citizen, pledging a financial reward for their acts and vowing to take the responsibility for them.
This month, the prosecution filed indictments against the would-be attackers at the Juvenile Military Court.

Democratic candidate for president Joe Biden’s position on the Iran Deal could lead to war between Israel and Iran, Settlements Minister Tzachi Hanegbi warned on Wednesday night.
“Biden has said openly for a long time that he will go back to the nuclear agreement,” Hanegbi said. “I see that as something that will lead to a confrontation between Israel and Iran.”

Hanegbi said he is not concerned about a likely Biden victory on most fronts, including the area of settlements, but Iran is a glaring exception.
The minister told Channel 13 News that he, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and most Israelis saw the Iran Deal signed by the Obama administration in 2015 – known formally as the The Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action – as “mistaken – and that’s an understatement.”
“If Biden stays with that policy, there will, in the end, be a violent confrontation between Israel and Iran,” he stated.
Hanegbi said US President Donald Trump’s declared goal to negotiate a deal with Iran is not the same, because it would be “a different agreement that he would force through maximum pressure sanctions.”
Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee Chairman Zvi Hauser (Derech Eretz) took a more optimistic approach. Hauser was cabinet secretary during part of Biden’s tenure as vice president and said he knows Biden’s stances and that he is a true friend of Israel.
“I assume that even if the Iran Deal is renewed… it will be better than the previous one,” he told Army Radio on Thursday. “There is broad agreement that it had significant holes when it comes to the interests of the free world.”
Hauser said the Middle East has changed since Biden left office in 2016. “This is a Middle East in which Iran is much more dangerous, in which its weapons and technology are much more accurate and much deadlier… This is not just Israel’s problem, but the whole world’s problem.”
Though Biden and Trump may have different ways of reaching an agreement with Iran, Hauser said the result is what’s most important: “Is he restraining Iran and preventing it from getting nuclear weapons?”
Hauser argued that “today, everyone understands the agreement wasn’t enough to prevent” Iran from developing nuclear weapons, and “countries of the free world know this is their test” – to stop Tehran from doing so.
A nuclear Iran would trigger an arms race, in which Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Egypt would develop their own nuclear weapons, Hauser warned.
“No one sees Iran’s behavior, creating instability in the Middle East, and thinks it’s right to let them win,” he added. “Neither the Americans nor Israel will allow a nuclear Iran.”
Meanwhile, Knesset Speaker Yariv Levin told The Jerusalem Post that Trump’s loss would not be a factor in deciding when Netanyahu will initiate an election.
“I don’t think that would be the relevant consideration,” Levin said.

Rabbi Jonathan Sacks: A Personal Tribute
Rabbi Sacks' towering intellect, eloquence and erudition made him one of our generation’s greatest spokesperson. He was also a great Jewish leader.

We are devastated by the tragic news of the passing of Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks this past Shabbat, one of the greatest leaders of modern times.

Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks was truly a giant. His towering intellect, unparalleled eloquence and erudition made him one of our generation’s greatest spokesperson, touching the minds and hearts of Jew and gentile alike. He was one of the most prolific thought leaders of our era, striking a finely tuned synthesis between classic and modern Jewish thought and texts and the highest secular academia too. His command of both the spoken and written word were formidable.

Like the conductor of a vast orchestra, Rabbi Sacks wove a perfectly synchronised symphony spanning from the particular to the universal, drawing on every available instrument in God's creation. The score he wrote himself was invariably a masterpiece of piercing intellectual and emotional depth and insight.

Well aware of the God given potential placed at his disposal, Rabbi Sacks shouldered his responsibility to inspire Jewish people the world over and mankind as a whole.

Seldom does one meet a person who looks themselves in the mirror, has the strength of character and integrity of purpose to navigate between their own talents and shortfalls, failures and successes and the courage to share personal lessons learned. He possessed the unique ability to combine high intellect with penetrating emotion and heartfelt humanity and care for all.

Rabbi Sacks shouldered his responsibility to inspire Jewish people the world over and mankind as a whole.
That he was possessed of staggering scholarship and awesome capability is incontestable. In my mind however, it is his steadfast commitment to unswervingly shoulder responsibility as a proud Jew and a leader that stands out as an example to us all. He was disarmingly candid about his natural failings and met many an obstacle in his life, both of a communal and personal nature. Yet, from the point in life at which he made the decision to stand up and shoulder a position of leadership, he never stopped communicating God's word to both the loftiest of minds and simultaneously to the man in the street. He pierced the hearts and minds of both.

Rabbi Sacks harnessed his talents to the full in order to maximise his contribution in this world. On many an occasion and at numerous junctures in his life, with over thirty books on bestsellers lists and every honour and accolade achieved, he could have reigned in his enormous workload or simply taken on less. However, he knew his calling and was keenly aware of the urgent need to bring a voice of decency, goodness and morality to an every increasingly confused world.

When others shied away from standing up, he bravely took the stage. This he did to the last. His voice was one of consummate Kiddush Hashem, sanctifying God's Name as he represented the Jewish people on the world stage. Rabbi Sacks' message was all-embracing and inclusive. His calling card was a clarion call to unity, morality, humanity and both personal and collective responsibility.

When our communal centre suffered a tragic anti-Semitic arson attack some years ago, as Chief Rabbi he was one of the first to visit the charred site. The personal legacy I received from Rabbi Sacks that day is one I have carried with me ever since. As we stepped carefully through the charred debris he turned to me and thundered. “Naftali, when they persecuted us in Egypt we knuckled down multiplied and expanded. The quintessentially Jewish response to tragedy is to build bigger, better, stronger than before.”

I don’t know if we have the ability bereft as we are today to be bigger, better or stronger than the giant human being and Jew we have so tragically lost, but I know that Rabbi Sacks would tell us that our duty is to never stop trying and that it is not the individual endeavour, rather it is all about the “Home we build Together”.

May his memory be a blessing.

Israel’s former UN ambassador has said Jerusalem’s central concern about the prospect of a Joe Biden presidency is his wish to re-enter nuclear negotiations with Iran.

Speaking on a Jewish News podcast, Danny Danon said if Biden were to start talking to Iran again, it would push Israel towards more regional alliances with Arab states who shared Jerusalem’s fears.
“For us, the major issue is Iran,” he told the podcast’s presenter Phil Dave. “Mr Biden said very clearly that he would re-enter the JCPOA [Iran nuclear deal]. That is a major change from the policy of Trump’s administration.

“Here in Israel we have to recalculate and get ready for a new era. The way we see it, this is a miserable agreement, breached many times by the Iranians. We were against it from the beginning.

“Not only us but many leaders of moderate Arab countries in the Middle East would have to think about what they do if the US changes course so dramatically. They are very worried about the Iranian nuclear race, and they don’t have the capabilities we have in terms of defence systems.”

Danon, who is a member of Benjamin Netanyahu’s Likud party, said he thought Arab states worried about Tehran’s intentions may at first try to convince Biden “not to engage with Iran, not to re-enter the JCPOA”.

However, he added: “If it happens, you will see interesting alliances in the region, with the bond between Israel and those countries becoming even stronger.”

While acknowledging Biden as a “charming” man who cares about Israel, Danon said Israel wanted to see if a Biden White House would bring back some members of Barack Obama’s team.

“We have some bad memories from those players,” he said. “The way they treated our prime minister [Netanyahu], the way they tried to push a revolution in the Security Council before he left office, we don’t have good memories, so it will be interesting to see who is around Biden if he enters the White House.”

The US presidential election was still too close to call as Jewish News went to press on Wednesday evening, with the country’s ideological and political split exposed and exacerbated as never before.

Polls showed that 77 percent of America’s 7.5 million Jews opted for Democrat Joe Biden, compared to 70 percent voting Democrat in 2016, but the big Jewish population in Florida – where Republican president Donald Trump won convincingly – was much less convinced.


Exit polls showed that 41 percent of Jews there voted for Trump this week, up from 24 percent in 2016, leading the Republican Jewish Coalition – which spent £4 million targeting Florida’s “undecided and persuadable” Jewish voters – to celebrate its “success” in the influential state.

In the strictly Orthodox communities in New York and New Jersey, Trump was the clear favourite, garnering up to 80 percent of Charedi support, as anger over state Democrats’ coronavirus lockdowns registered at the polls, yet across the country, far more American Jews voted for Biden than voted for Hillary Clinton four years ago.

Jeremy Ben-Ami, president of the progressive Jewish group JStreet, said: “In this historically pivotal election, Jewish voters have just totally repudiated Donald Trump and a Republican Party that has catered to the most far-right, xenophobic elements of the country.”

What has Donald Trump’s impact been on democracy?
Even before the final count, Biden had the most votes in any US election ever, but the complexity of the electoral college system means that this is not enough. In 2016, Trump beat Clinton despite her winning three million more votes.

As many feared, the vote-counting was beset by legal wrangling, fraud allegations, suggestions of dishonesty and unsubstantiated claims of victory, with Trump at one point ordering a halt to vote-counting, directly contravening the US Constitution.

The day before the vote, the widely respected Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organisations issued an unusual security briefing, urging caution among US Jews both on and after election day.

“It remains likely that violent extremists will target individuals or institutions that represent symbols of their grievances… which increases the potential of politically or ideologically motivated threats against the Jewish community,” it said.

If the result is disputed, as expected, the world’s oldest democracy will join Tanzania, Belarus and the former Soviet state of Georgia in having its recent election challenged, but it may be midweek next week before the true picture is known.

Pennsylvania’s result may be in by Friday, but the deadline for postal votes in Nevada and Alaska is Tuesday 10 November, while the deadline for North Carolina is Thursday 12 November.

Whatever the outcome, American Jewish groups were this week left harbouring concerns about the more extreme wings of each party, after Democrats Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib – who both favour a boycott of Israel – were re-elected.

Meanwhile new Republicans Marjorie Taylor Greene and Lauren Boebert became the first Congressional adherents of the antisemitic QAnon conspiracy theory, the content from which big social media companies have vowed to remove.

Amid the election hubbub, Trump quietly withdrew America from the 2015 Paris climate agreement obliging states to limit their carbon emissions. The US produces 15 percent of the world’s emission but Trump supports the US fossil fuel industry.

Everything she said was based on truth and facts. She stood up for Israel, called out antisemitism and the antisemitism of many on the Left, and did so with poise. BDS is Antisemitic – and so is Omar
The Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement wants to claim they are not antisemitic, despite their obsession with bringing down the Jewish state and despite the fact that its cofounder Omar Barghouti is a virulent antisemite.

Ilhan Omar wants to claim she is not an antisemite, despite her constant criticism and antisemitic remarks about the Jewish state.
But Bari Weiss will have none of it. And what is so amazing is that every time the CNN reporter tried to play devil’s advocate, Weiss had a factual, flawless response. Her responses were based on truth and facts.
Israel is a Democracy
All the claims about Israel mistreating “Palestinians” are false. Israel is the only democracy in the Middle East. “Palestinians” are only mistreated by their own leadership.

Israeli Arabs have the same rights as Jews. They can be doctors and lawyers. They can vote. They are part of the Israeli government.
Israel is a world leader in technology and is constantly looking to find cures for illness and improve the world.
But those like Ilhan Omar and movements like the BDS movement do not care about the truth. They have an obsession with Israel because they want to destroy it.
Barghouti has said that “Palestinians” will not accept a Jewish state. Why don’t people realize that none of this is about standing up for the rights of “Palestinians” or Arabs? The focus on the Jewish state while neglecting to address the countries that are really abusing human rights is indicative of complete antisemitism.
Why do other nations and peoples have a right to a homeland, but the Jewish people do not have the right to their ancient homeland that G-d gave them? The only answer to that question is antisemitism.

Israel, Democrats and Republicans
Israel is not just a tiny insignificant country in the Middle East. And Israel does not just have religious and historical importance, but its importance manifests itself in other ways too. It is the only democracy in the Middle East. It is the strongest ally of the Western world in that region. And Democrats and Republicans both value the Jewish state.

Although there are those on both sides who may not be as strong in their support, Israel is generally a bipartisan topic.


There is just something about Israel. After all, it IS G-d’s chosen land.

Israel Represents Strength
The thing about Israel is that its very existence is miraculous. It represents hope when everything feels hopeless. It represents courage when all feels lost. Israel is a pillar of strength. It is a story of undying faithfulness; of unwavering commitment.

Supporting Israel just makes sense. And if America is a strong democracy, it is only rational that they would support Israel which is a strong democracy.


Israel and America share the same values. They share the same yearning for a world without war.

Rabbi Chaim Kanievsky, the 92-year-old haredi (ultra-Orthodox) leader who contracted coronavirus earlier in October, has recovered according to his doctor, The Jerusalem Post’s sister publication Maariv reported on Wednesday.
Dr. Ori Rogowski, who has been treating the rabbi since his diagnosis, said on Wednesday that Kanievsky has completely recovered and is in good condition, the report indicated.

Sadiq Khan has warned the proposed expansion of the Congestion Charge would “split North London’s Jewish community in Hendon and Golders Green”.

The Mayor of London’s concerns come amid government proposals to extend a £15 charge to North and South Circular roads, in a bid to secure more funding for Transport for London (TFL).

The plans have led fears that synagogues such as Alyth in Golders Green could face a reduction in attendance.

North-west London Jewish communities also straddle the North Circular, separating Hendon to the north from Golders Green to the south. Extending the zone would impose a £15 payment on travelling between them.

Khan said it “would in essence split North London’s Jewish community in Hendon and Golders Green”, and would “have a devastating effect on London’s diverse communities, who are already suffering disproportionately as a result of coronavirus.”

“It is simply wrong to hit four million more people with additional costs at a time when many are struggling to make ends meet, and I have made clear to ministers that I will not agree to these draconian terms.”

“TfL’s financial issues are solely as a result of the pandemic. The Government must not punish Londoners for doing the right thing to tackle Covid-19, and should instead come back to the table with a revised plan which is right not only for our city but our country too.”

Leeds University has launched an investigation after a Palestinian terrorist  addressed students, advocating for “armed struggle” as a means of resistance.

Leila Khaled, who hijacked two international flights for the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), spoke to students at a virtual event on Friday.

During the Zoom event, as part of the Apartheid Off Campus campaign, promoted by the University of Leeds Palestine Solidarity Group, Khaled told students that Palestinians are “not afraid of struggle”.
She added: “We have used all means of struggle and we are still determined to continue using all means of struggle including armed struggle.”

Following Khaled’s address, Adam Saeed, the student chair of the meeting, told attendees: “I think we can all be inspired by this”.

He said: “Everything that she said about international law is true, it doesn’t mean that anyone in this meeting endorses or encourages anyone to take arms, what it means is that under international law people are entitled to resist occupation in any means they see fit.”

The event had originally been denied permission by Leeds university itself, who said organisers had not followed protocol or provided sufficient notice, especially about Leila Khaled’s appearance. But Leeds Palestine Solidarity Group said they believed “Leila Khaled deserves a platform”.

A joint University of Leeds and Leeds University Union (LUU) statement said: “We were disappointed that the event organisers chose to proceed without our permission. We are investigating this matter further.”

Khaled’s first airline hijacking was in 1969, when a flight from Rome to Tel Aviv was forced to divert to Damascus. She had extensive plastic surgery to prevent anyone from recognising her when she carried out her second hijack the following year, on an El Al flight from Amsterdam to New York City.

The plane landed at Heathrow where she was arrested and held for 28 days, before being released by then prime minister, Edward Heath, in exchange for western hostages held by the PFLP.

Leeds Jewish Society and the Union of Jewish Students said they are “extremely disturbed and shocked” that the event took place.

“This event went ahead despite it being shut down by Zoom, on the basis that they would have been providing a platform for a terrorist,” they said.

Calling on the university and the students’ union to take action, they added: “This event also included academics and students at the University, all being complicit in sharing this platform. It is imperative that Jewish students are able to access academic spaces, both virtual and physical, free of hate and prejudice.”

Professor James Dickins, from the university’s Arabic department, who has previously signed a letter claiming the IHRA definition of antisemitism conflates criticism of Israel with antisemitism, attended the event and gave a speech to students following Khaled’s address.


Board of Deputies Vice President Amanda Bowman has condemned the event, saying: “That a student event took place at Leeds with Leila Khaled is simply unacceptable. Jewish students and academics should have access to academic spaces free of hate, without platforms being shared with someone who advocates for ‘armed struggle’. It is right that the University is investigating this matter further.”

In the three hour meeting with Rabbi Zisholtz, he began with a strong warning: “…the process of redemption is about to start happening very quickly and at a fast pace. It is important that people remain calm and steady to act properly at the right time.

“There is a potential Messiah in every generation and there are righteous men who know precisely who it is. This is, of course, true in this generation. “Getting the word out now that the Messiah is closer than ever is a matter of life and death. Haven’t you heard of Gog and Magog? That is what is going to happen very soon. Right now, the situation is explosive more than you can possibly imagine.

Everyone needs to know whether they are on the inside or if they are going to be left out.” The Rabbi went further to reiterate a number of signs of which prominent rabbis have taken note of and firmly believe to be evidence of the coming of the “Messiah”. “Rabbi Dov Kook, as everyone knows, is a very righteous man.

He is one of the greatest men of our generation…[and] ten years ago when Israel was suffering from a horrible drought, someone asked Rabbi Kook when the Sea of Galilee will again be full,” recounted Rabbi Zisholtz. “Rabbi Kook responded that when the Messiah arrives, the Sea of Galilee will be full. In a few weeks, the Sea of Galilee will be full for the first time since Rabbi Kook made this statement.”

“Another righteous rabbi said that according to the current situation in heaven, there will not be Israeli elections – rather, there will be a war,” cautioned Zisholtz. “If the elections do take place, it’s pointless since it will end like the other elections; no government will come out of it. No one will take the government away from Netanyahu.”

Holocaust survivor and British weightlifting hero Sir Ben Helfgott has been honoured with a Pride of Britain award for five decades of tireless work in passing on the lessons of the Nazi era and fighting for those who lived through the horrors.

Poland-born Sir Ben – whose parents and younger sister were killed in the Shoah – survived Buchenwald and was liberated from Theresienstadt before being brought to the UK aged just 15.


Remarkably, just eleven years later, Sir Ben – who turns 91 next month – captained the British weightlifting team at the 1956 Olympics, a feat he repeated four years later.

He is recognised alongside Marcus Rashford and other lesser known heroes at the Daily Mirror’s Pride of Britain Awards, whose format has been revamped this year amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Instead of the usual glittering dinner in central London, a host of celebrities have been surprising winners around the country over the last few weeks.

Sir Ben – who has held positions in almost every major Holocaust remembrance and education organisation – will be seen by a TV audience of millions next Sunday receiving the famous trophy from Stephen Fry, surrounded by his wife Arza, three sons and five of his grandchildren.

“You shouldn’t have to be Jewish or to have a relatives who perished in the Holocaust yourself to be stunned by characters like Ben Helfgott, though of course it does add an extra element of admiration and appreciation,” said the author and television presenter after making the presentation at the Holocaust memorial in Hyde Park earlier this month.

“His actions speak for all humanity however. His quiet determination to ensure that the unspeakable wickedness and evil of what happened has been inspirational. Against indifference, denial and doubt he has raised a literal and figurative memorial wall that honours the victims and helps push back against the possibility that such horrors might be allowed to happen again.”

It was so wonderful to see his large family standing there beaming with pride and of course I couldn’t help but think “if he hadn’t survived … none of them would be there.”

He would say he had survived because he was lucky, but it was also because he was strong. Literally strong – heavens, the man went on to become an Olympic weightlifter! It’s wonderful thing that Pride of Britain has recognised him.”

He added: “In this time of fear, distress, doubt and anxiety the quiet, unassuming strength of a man like Sir Ben Helfgott reminds us that the human spirit can – like grass through concrete – win through.”

In 1963, Sir Ben helped to set up the ’45 Aid Society to assist the more than 700 children who arrived with him in the UK after the War, leading the organisation for nearly half a century until 2016.

He has also made it his mission to ensure younger generations know about what happened in order that history isn’t repeated. He has served as president of the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust and was a member of David Cameron’s Holocaust Commission which recommended the creation of a national Holocaust Memorial and Learning Centre in London.

Sir Ben said he was “honoured” to receive the “wholly unexpected award”, telling Jewish News: “I have spent much of my life ensuring the victims of the Holocaust are remembered, and the lessons of those times are taught. I hope this prestigious award will help to spread that important message a little further.”

Describing Sir Ben as “a hero”, Holocaust Educational Trust chief executive Karen Pollock pointed out he was just six stone at the time of his liberation.

“Yet he went on not only to rebuild his life here in Britain, but to captain the British Olympic weightlifting team. Ben has dedicated his life to ensuring that the past is never forgotten, campaigning to ensure that Holocaust education and remembrance will always be a cornerstone of British society.”

“I have spent much of my life ensuring the victims of the Holocaust are remembered, and the lessons of those times are taught. I hope this prestigious award will help to spread that important message a little further.

Sir Ben Helfgott is simply remarkable – the epitome of determination, passion and drive; a visionary leader and a force for good. He is my hero and this Pride of Britain lifetime achievement award could not be more richly deserved.”

Jewish News presented Sir Ben – who was knighted last year – with a lifetime achievement award in 2012 and he has subsequently received such accolades from HET and Limmud FSU.

Temple Mount activist Yehuda Glick wants to run for President
Glick explains why he has what it takes to replace Reuven Rivlin
Glick announced last month that he intends to run for president in a vote that will take place in the Knesset in May or June.
He was born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1965 and made aliyah with his family nine years later to Beersheba, where his father, Professor Shimon Glick, helped start the medical school at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev.
Glick made a name for himself as an activist for enabling Jewish prayer on the Temple Mount. But his activism also made him enemies. Next Thursday will be the sixth anniversary of the assassination attempt that almost resulted in his death. Islamic Jihad terrorist Mutaz Hijazi approach Glick outside the Menachem Begin Heritage Center in Jerusalem, called him “an enemy of al-Aksa” and shot him from close range in his chest and stomach.
Glick miraculously recovered and returned to his activism. An unknown Likud activist at the time named Amir Ohana volunteered to be his bodyguard. They both ended up entering the Knesset not much later. Ohana quickly rose to become justice minister and now public security minister. Glick was sworn in on May 25, 2016, after former defense minister Moshe Ya’alon resigned from the Knesset.
Glick surprised anyone who saw him as an extremist by becoming a bridge-builder in the Knesset, building friendships across the political spectrum, including with Arab MKs. It is that bridge-building that Glick hopes to continue out of the President’s Residence and across the country, he said, in an interview with the Magazine.

“The president of Israel is much more than just a symbol,” he said. “He represents the spirit of the nation. There is a great divide in Israel because of politics and COVID-19. We need a place where the people can express how they feel.”
Glick likes to compare the president to the conductor of an orchestra.
“We don’t see his face,” he said. “We see his back, while he gets all of the instruments to play together.”
Glick said he has learned the needs of different sectors of Israeli society. He does not shy away from criticizing current President Reuven Rivlin, who he believes has not been enough of a unifying figure.
“Over last two years of political fighting, there has been no one who can unite the nation,” he lamented. “The president has been preaching. People don’t like to be scolded. They like to be listened to.”
Rivlin delivered an address at the opening session of the Knesset’s winter session last week that Glick considered less than presidential.
“It was a political speech that took a side,” Glick said. “Half the people thought it was a great speech, and half thought it was terrible. People don’t think he is listening to them.”
Glick’s slogan for his race is “a president with he’arat panim,” which the Babylon Hebrew-English dictionary translates into “kindness, cordiality, amiability and welcoming” but literally means that he lights up people’s faces.
“I arrived in the Knesset with an image as a very extreme person,” he said. “Little by little, I succeeded in creating a discourse across all the divides. What was the secret? He’arat panim. In politics, we tend to look for each other’s failures and hit them below the belt. What we need is to accept others as they are, welcome them and bring out the best in them. It starts with first impressions, leads to building trust, listening and inclusiveness.”  
Glick takes pride in the meetings he had as an MK with representatives of the left-wing lobby J Street and with Christian Evangelicals, because his views were very different than those of his counterparts, but they could still listen and learn from each other. He also has made a point of speaking to demonstrators against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu near his home in Jerusalem’s diverse Kiryat Menachem neighborhood.
While Glick has met recently with 40 MKs about his run for president, it is still unclear whether the demonstrators will get their way and an election will be initiated. If that happens, the next president could be selected by a new Knesset. By law, a new president must be elected between 30 and 90 days before the current president’s seven-year term ends. Rivlin’s tenure will end on July 24. The Knesset speaker and his deputies set the date, which must be at least three weeks after the date’s announcement. The deadline for any citizen to announce his or her candidacy is two weeks before the election. To run, a candidate must submit the signatures of 10 supporters among the 120 MKs.
The speaker must announce the list of candidates at least a week before the election in the Knesset. To win, a candidate must receive an absolute majority of 61 MKs in a secret ballot vote. If, in a first round of voting, no candidate receives a majority, another round is held with the top two finishers from the first round participating in the runoff. A third round would be held if the two candidates finish in a tie.
Because the race is held by secret ballot, it is one of the few votes in the Knesset that does not go by party lines. That is why it is important to Glick to stress that he is not running as a representative of a specific party. Glick said he hoped Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu would support him. But he has not spoken yet to the prime minister, who has undoubtedly not forgotten that in the December 2019 Likud leadership race, Glick backed challenger Gideon Sa’ar.
Currently, no Likud candidate has thrown his hat in the ring. Until recently, it was seen as likely that there would be a run by Knesset speaker turned Health Minister Yuli Edelstein, who once employed Glick as a spokesman. Glick made a point of checking and found out that Edelstein no longer intended to run. The most likely candidates are Jewish Agency chairman Isaac Herzog, whose father Chaim Herzog was president; former minister Shimon Shetreet; Economy Minister Amir Peretz and Israel Prize-winning educator Miriam Peretz (no relation). But the field is far from set.
“I have started meeting with all 120 MKs, but I will be meeting with the public as well,” he said. “I have begun a journey. Once the people are convinced that I am the right man for the job, the MKs will, too.”
Glick also wants to be there for Diaspora Jews and represent Israel to non-Jews around the world, serving as a blessing to all nations.
“I am bothered by the divide between Israel and the Jewish Diaspora,” he said. “I would develop dialogue with the Diaspora and listen to them. Both sides can benefit from listening to each other and understanding each other.”
Glick said he sees his American upbringing as an asset, because the president must speak English well and because it helps to know how to be inclusive and understand the importance of diversity.
“I am here to listen to everyone’s pain,” he said. “I want to be there for everyone. I felt something had to be done. If I sat at home and didn’t run, I wouldn’t ever be able to forgive myself.”

Sudan will become the third Arab country in the past two months to normalise ties with Israel, continuing the trend of Arab states’ willingness to advance ties with the Jewish state even without a peace agreement with the Palestinians.

President Donald Trump announced the agreement on Friday. According to a joint statement released by Israel, Sudan and the U.S., the two countries will “end the state of belligerence between their nations.”


The statement also noted that the countries will “begin economic and trade relations, with an initial focus on agriculture.” In the coming weeks, the statement says, they will meet to discuss “agriculture technology, aviation, migration issues and other areas.”

“The Arab-Israeli conflict is moving towards an end,” said Brian Hook, the top State Department official who helped broker the deal, on Friday at an Oval Office presentation.

Sudan has been ruled by a Sovereignty Council, led by military leader Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and prime minister Abdalla Hamdok, since a military coup last year deposed longtime Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir, who was subsequently convicted of corruption. He presided over the country during the Darfur ethnic conflict, which involved what the International Criminal Court has deemed war crimes by the Sudanese government.

Earlier in the day, Trump informed Congress of his intent to remove Sudan’s designation as a state sponsor of terrorism, which reportedly is part of the agreement.

Welcoming the announcement, Board of Deputies of British Jews president, Marie van der Zyl, said: “We warmly welcome the normalisation of ties between Israel and Sudan, which will hopefully add to a growing era of peace and prosperity in the Middle East and North Africa. It is our continued hope that this development and spirit of cooperation will also help foster peace with the Palestinians, and greatly enhance the security for all in the region. ”

Sudan will get new leadership in 2022, when the state’s agreed-upon transition period ends. The north African country’s state religion was Islam until earlier this year.

The United Arab Emirates and Bahrain have in recent weeks launched fast tracks to open up diplomatic affairs, trade and tourism with Israel, but Sudan is especially significant because it is by far the largest of the three countries, in land mass and in population. It is also symbolically significant because its capital, Khartoum, is where the Arab League met in 1967 after the Six-Day War and issued its “three no’s” to reject any engagement with Israel whatsoever and to continue the state of war.

Like the UAE and Bahrain, Sudan has not been in a war with Israel and has over the years enjoyed a degree of secret ties with the country. In 1984, the Sudanese authorities assisted in an airlift of Ethiopian Jews to Israel. Sudan’s leader Abdel Fattah al-Burhan in February met openly with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, in Uganda.

There are also thousands of refugees from Sudan’s military conflicts living in Israel.

Over the past few days, a story has spread in Jewish American circles about the roots of the Trump family's ties to New York city's religious Jews. According to the story, Rabbi Israel Wagner, a Holocaust survivor, began organizing prayer minyans (quora) in the underground parking garage in the apartment building he lived in Brooklyn, which was built in 1950 and mostly housed fellow survivors. As the years passed, these minyans expanded "exponentially."

"Having only heard about their landlord, Mr. Fred Trump, by name, Rabbi Wagner set out to meet him in the hopes that Mr. Trump would assist them in establishing a new facility as a Jewish community center," said the message being disseminated on Jewish WhatsApp groups in the US, parts of which were originally posted on the Beach Haven Jewish Center's website.

"From the first meeting, a deep friendship sparked between Mr. Trump, a Lutheran land developer, and Rabbi Wagner, a Polish Jew. Their mutual love, respect, and friendship only deepened over the next 48 years. Mr. Fred Trump donated the plot of land where the synagogue was built and contributed towards the construction. He then attended the dinner every year and generously donated to the Beach Haven Jewish Center. He affectionately referred to Rabbi Wagner as 'My Rabbi' at their yearly meetings," the website said.

The message goes on: "The apartment owner continued giving financial assistance to the synagogue over the years. He was a Christian person who instilled his respect for Jews in his 14-year-old son, a wild and adventurous boy. Today, the rabbi's son clearly remembers seeing the boy at the laundromat, while he and his friends were praying the shacharit (morning prayer). The building owner taught his son the importance of responsibility. His name was Fred Trump and the boy's name was Donald Trump. As we all know, the son learned from his father how to be a faithful supporter of Israel and a generous friend of the Jews."

Attached to the fascinating story is a photograph from 1956, which shows the president's father at the synagogue's cornerstone-laying ceremony.

A confidant of President Trump confirmed the story to Israel Hayom. Although Trump is broadly accused by leftist circles in the US of being anti-Semitic, it appears that even in his childhood he was raised with an affinity toward the Jews. As a reminder, many years later, Trump's daughter, Ivanka, converted to Judaism in accordance with Jewish law. The president himself has boasted on multiple occasions about "my Jewish grandchildren."

Abdul Rahman al-Lahim, a Saudi lawyer with a quarter of a million Twitter followers, called "to free the Al-Aqsa Mosque from the Palestinian brats" in a post on his Twitter account Monday.

He wrote the remarks after Palestinian Arabs cursed visitors to the Temple Mount from Arab states which recently signed normalization agreements with Israel.

Al-Lahim tweeted in Arabic his criticism of the Palestinian Arabs, whom he called "raging brats," and his words were translated by Moran Tal.

"It is very important that the emirates, Bahrain and Israel seek after the peace agreements to find a tool to liberate the Al-Aqsa Mosque from the Palestinian brats, in a way that will ensure that visitors to Al-Aqsa are protected from Palestinian bullying," he wrote.

He did not mince words, calling the PA control of the Temple Mount "the rape of Al Aqsa."

The Temple Mount is the Holiest Site of the Jewish people – for at least 3,000 years. Beforehand, it was also the site where Abraham purportedly went up to sacrific his own son, Isaac, but was prevented at the very last moment by an Angel of God. It is the location that King David, around 1,000 years later, would purchase in order to build the 1st Temple. But God told him that his son, Solomon, would build the Temple. Indeed, King Solomon built the Temple there and it stood for more than 400 years until the Babylonian King, Nebuchadnezzar destroyed it.

The 2nd Temple stood there for 400+ years, in the very same place. It was rebuilt in several stages. First, Ezra and Nehemiah built it there. Later on, it was enhance by King Herod. The Temple was always the heart of Jerusalem. Jerusalem was always the heart of the Jewish people’s yearning throughout the exiles. Today, the entire history is unfolding via these fascinating archaeological finds.

This has got to be one of the most epic videos ever. There is really no way to answer back to Dershowitz after this. He is intelligent, accurate, and the student had no idea what to say after he spoke.

The progressive views are often as close-minded and anti-liberal as could be.  No truly liberal person would solely focus on Israel’s treatment of Arabs while ignoring the human rights of all Arab countries.  No truly liberal person would point an accusatory finger at Israel before checking the facts.  Today, that has become the norm.  Prof. Dershowitz properly puts this complainer in her place as it is obvious that this person cares little about the facts or truth.   It is just a predictable progressive attack on Israel.

Once upon a time, liberals were the conscience of our nation. They brought good into the world by reminding us that “All men are created equal” actually means that. Today, the main agenda that the left has been advancing is one of “All men and women and transgenders and whatever they feel like calling themselves should all be the same no matter what.” We’ve lost our way. Prof. Dershowitz, an old-time liberal is the perfect person to call out the radical left.

A Vice President’s View on Religion
The potential vice president, Kamala Harris, wants to basically abolish religion from the system. She is not the only one. Other Democrats plan to do the same. They want to completely remove religion and G-d from the core of America. They want to remove the founding principles. This is not a joke. This is not an exaggeration. Just listen to the way they speak and what they do. Many people might not even be aware of the type of President and VP they plan to vote for.

What about the Constitution?
Does the Constitution not mean anything anymore? What about religious freedom? Don’t Americans condemn those countries that persecute those who are religious or of a different religion?


Well, that is exactly what is happening in America. The Democrats are trying to take away religious freedom. They do not believe that you can be a proud and good American and also be religious. The fact that the potential vice president is against religion is frightening. If she gets into office with Joe Biden, who knows what will happen to those who are religious.

You may not like President Trump, but he values religion. He supports it. He defends it. Trump has done good things for America and for the world. He defends the constitution and the values on which America was founded.


You may not agree with every single one of Trump’s policies, but Biden and Harris will bring America down. They will bring religion down. Their plans for America should make Americans shake with fear, but instead, so many have been brainwashed to not vote for Trump without knowing anything about the other side that they would vote for.

Israelis have flocked to support Netanyahu in multiple elections over the last 13 years. He has served as Israel’s Prime Minister longer than any other Prime Minister – even David Ben-Gurion. Not only does he never tire. He seems to get stronger and stronger by the day.

Actress Maureen Lipman will reportedly be made a dame in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list. The 74-year-old Jewish actress will be recognised for services to charity and the arts following her 50-year career in TV and film, according to The Times.
Lipman, who was made a CBE in 1999, made one of her early big screen appearances in 1968 film Up The Junction, starring alongside Dennis Waterman and Suzy Kendall.
She played the title character’s mother in Roman Polanski’s Oscar-winning 2002 drama The Pianist. Lipman is currently starring in Coronation Street as Evelyn Plummer.
