A magnitude 6.1 earthquake shook southern Iran at 2:00 AM local time on Saturday, killing five and injuring at least 50. The seismic event was followed by approximately 30 aftershocks, with two measuring at 6.3 and 6.1.
DEADLY IRAN QUAKES
“All of the victims died in the first earthquake, and no one was harmed in the next two severe quakes as people were already outside their homes,” said Foad Moradzadeh, governor of Bandar Lengeh country, quoted by the state news agency IRNA.
Iran is one of the most seismically active countries in the world, being crossed by several major faults covering at least 90% of the country. As a result, earthquakes in Iran occur often and are destructive. Iran is well known for its long history of disastrous earthquake activity.
State TV said 150 quakes and tremors had struck the western Hormozgan province over the past month.
In April last year, a magnitude 5.9 earthquake hit Bushehr, where a major nuclear power plant is located. In southeastern Iran’s Kerman province, a 6.6 magnitude earthquake killed more than 31,000 people and flattened the ancient city of Bam in 2003.
The recent tremors were felt in the United Arab Emirates and other neighboring Gulf states. According to USGS, other impacted countries include Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Iran, Oman, Pakistan, Qatar, and Afghanistan.
Last month at least 1,000 people died in an earthquake in Paktika, a mountainous region in eastern Afghanistan.
GENTLE QUAKES IN ISRAEL
The earthquakes in Iran come in sharp contrast to a recent series of tremors in Israel. Last Wednesday night, a 3.1 magnitude earthquake shook northern Israel.
There were no reports of injuries or damage. Israel’s Geological Survey tracked the quake, saying it was centered 13 kilometers (8 miles) northeast of Beit She’an, on the border with Jordan, at a depth of 13 kilometers.
In January, a large 6.5-magnitude quake hit off the west coast of Cyprus and was felt in nearby Israel, Lebanon and Turkey. Less than two weeks later, two small earthquakes hit northern Israel. In early February, another quake off the coast of Cyprus was felt in Israel. In late February, two small earthquakes, 3.5 and 3.2, shook northern Israel. Another minor earthquake took place off the coast last month.
While most of these earthquakes shook seismically active regions, it should be noted that Israel sits on t; Israeli quakes have been far more gentle than those experienced by Iran.
EARTHQUAKES AND PROPHECY
As terrifying as earthquakes can be, there may be a silver lining to an increase in regional seismic activity. In a 2007 article in the J-Post, Dr. Shmuel Marco, Head of the School of the Environment and Earth Sciences at Tel Aviv University, noted that prophets became active a certain number of years after major earthquakes. Major earthquakes were recorded in the Jordan Valley in the years 31 BCE, 363 CE, 749 CE and 1033 CE.
“So roughly,” wrote Marco,,,,,, “we are talking about an interval of every 400 years. If we follow the patterns of nature, a major quake should be expected any time because almost a whole millennium has passed since the last strong earthquake.”
Dr. Marco went so far as to attribute Joshua’s victory at Jericho to divinely directed seismic interference.
“The destruction of the walls of the city and the damming of the river, as described in Joshua 6:1-16, is generally agreed by most archeologists to be the result of an earthquake, possibly on the Jericho Fault,” Dr.Marco wrote.
Earthquakes are prophesied to accompany the end-of-days however earthquakes inside Israel will m; manifest in a vastly different manner as compared to those outside the Holy Land.

The new air defense system reportedly destroyed in Saturday’s airstrike was “a new move by the Iranians in Syria” to protect their military interests.

Israeli forces intercepted and destroyed an Iranian air defense system in transit in northern Syria over the weekend, according to a report by Israeli television.
An airstrike was reported Saturday morning in the northwestern Syrian town of Al-Hamidiyah, south of the port city of Tartus and just north of the Lebanese border.
Syria’s state controlled media outlet SANA said the Israeli air force was responsible for the strike, and claimed it destroyed poultry farms, injuring two civilians.
But according to a report by Channel 12, the airstrike targeted an Iranian air defense system, which given its proximity to the port of Tartus, had recently been offloaded from a ship.
The report called the air defense system a “game changing” advance for Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) forces deployed in Syria.
The London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the poultry farms were fronts used by the Iranian-backed Hezbollah terror group.
Amid an ongoing years-long de facto war between IRGC Quds Forces in Syria and the Israeli military, Iran has in recent years sought to challenge the IDF’s ability to operate in Syrian airspace.
The new air defense system destroyed in Saturday’s airstrike was, according to the Channel 12 report, part of “a new move by the Iranians in Syria to bring in air defense system to protect their military interests.”
While Iran has a significant military presence in Syria, including both its Quds Force and allied local militias, it has thus far relied on the Assad regime’s air defense network for protection from Israeli airstrikes.
A report last December citing Israeli security officials claimed that Israel has struck some three quarters of Iran’s weapons supply in Syria.
Four years ago, Iran attempted to deploy its own air defense system in Syria, but was reportedly foiled by an Israeli airstrike.
Saturday’s airstrike in Syria came just hours after two explosions reportedly caused heavy damage to an Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Basij militia base southeast of Tehran Friday night.

In his first address to Israel as Prime Minister, Yair Lapid thanked Naftali Bennett for an orderly transition of power and put Iran on notice.
Opposition leader Benjamin Netanyahu called Lapid on Friday, wishing him a peaceful term with “4 months of security quiet” and offered to continue receiving security updates through military secretary Avi Gil.
Lapid addressed the country on Saturday night.
“I want to start by thanking the 13th Prime Minister of the State of Israel, Naftali Bennett. For your decency, for your friendship and for leading the government this past year to economic and security achievements not seen here for years,” Lapid said.
Lapid added “a special thank you for allowing the citizens of Israel to see this week an orderly transition between people who keep agreements and believe in one another,” a poke at Netanyahu who reneged on a similar rotational agreement with Benny Gantz in 2020.
“We believe that Israel must be a liberal democracy in which every citizen has the right to change the government and set the course of their life. Nobody can be denied their fundamental rights: respect, liberty, freedom of employment, and the right to personal security,” Lapid continued.
“We believe that Israel is a Jewish state. Its character is Jewish. Its identity is Jewish. Its relations with its non-Jewish citizens are also Jewish. The book of Leviticus says, ‘But the stranger who dwelleth with you shall be unto you as one born among you, and thou shalt love him as thyself.’”
Lapid then turned to security issues.
“We believe that so long as Israel’s security needs are met, Israel is a country that seeks peace. Israel stretches out its hand to all the peoples of the Middle East, including the Palestinians, and says: the time has come for you to recognize that we’ll never move from here, let’s learn to live together,” the Prime Minister said.
“We believe there is a great blessing in the Abraham Accords, a great blessing in the security and economic momentum created at the Negev Summit with the UAE, Bahrain, Egypt, and Morocco and that there will be a great blessing in the agreements yet to come.”
On Iran, Lapid vowed not to back down against Tehran’s threats to Mideast security.
“We’ll do whatever we must to prevent Iran from acquiring a nuclear capability, or entrenching itself on our borders,” adding, “I say to everyone seeking our demise, from Gaza to Tehran, from the shores of Lebanon to Syria: don’t test us. Israel knows how to use its strength against every threat, against every enemy.”
The bulk of Lapid’s remarks, however, were an appeal for Israeli unity and to lower social polarization.
“The State of Israel is bigger than all of us. More important than any of us. It was here before us, and will be here long after us. It doesn’t belong only to us. It belongs to those who dreamed of it for thousands of years in the Diaspora, and also to those yet to be born, to future generations,” Lapid said.
Israelis will always have disagreements, but “the question is how we manage them, and how we make sure they don’t manage us,” he added.
“In Israel, extremism doesn’t come from the streets to politics. It’s the opposite. It flows like lava from politics to the streets. The political sphere has become more and more extreme, violent and vicious, and it’s dragging Israeli society along with it. This we must stop. This is our challenge,” he said.
Israeli elections are scheduled for November 1. Lapid will serve as caretaker prime minister until a new government is sworn in.

Facing Hezbollah Threat, Israel Ramps up Bomb Shelter Construction in North
The Defense Ministry on Tuesday, June 28, announced that it had begun reinforcement work on dozens of homes in Israeli communities close to the Lebanese border — those that are most likely to be hit by rocket fire in a future conflict with the Hezbollah terror group.
The effort, dubbed Shield of the North, officially began in October, when the ministry’s Engineering and Construction Division, along with the Israel Defense Forces’ Home Front Command, started installing new bomb shelters in homes in the community of Kfar Yuval, northeast of Kiryat Shmona.
In the coming months, dozens of bomb shelters will be built in homes in the northern town of Shlomi, which were constructed in the 1970s without reinforced rooms, the ministry said.
Separately, the ministry published a tender for the construction of 110 bomb shelters in Misgav Am and is set to publish similar tenders for the towns of Margaliot and Manara in the coming weeks.
The ministry said it was in the “architectural planning phase” of bomb shelters in 12 other locales, totaling some 1,000 homes. (TOI / VFI News)

The effort, dubbed Shield of the North, officially began in October, when the ministry’s Engineering and Construction Division, along with the Israel Defense Forces’ Home Front Command, started installing new bomb shelters in homes in the community of Kfar Yuval, northeast of Kiryat Shmona.
In the coming months, dozens of bomb shelters will be built in homes in the northern town of Shlomi, which were constructed in the 1970s without reinforced rooms, the ministry said.
Separately, the ministry published a tender for the construction of 110 bomb shelters in Misgav Am and is set to publish similar tenders for the towns of Margaliot and Manara in the coming weeks.
The ministry said it was in the “architectural planning phase” of bomb shelters in 12 other locales, totaling some 1,000 homes. (TOI / VFI News)

An Israeli security official publicly confirmed for the first time that Israel successfully thwarted an Iranian cyber attack on its water supply, though hackers from the Islamic Republic nearly succeeded in sickening hundreds of civilians, last Wednesday.
The deputy chief of IDF cyber Unit 8200, identified only as Colonel U, said a cyber security conference that an “adversary [Iran] attacked water facilities in Israel. We saw this attacker attempting to poison the water in an attempt to claim human lives. We mitigated that threat far in advance.
“Another adversary attacked Israel, and we also found that they were attempting to target U.S. power plants as well,” he said. “This was the first indication of this attack. It enabled preventing this threat through tight collaboration with our amazing American partners.”
According to a Financial Times report, the April 2020 attack has served as a major wake-up call for Israel that its civilian infrastructure is not off-limits in the ongoing shadow war between Jerusalem and Tehran.
The attack “was more sophisticated than they [Israel] initially thought,” the official told the Times. “It was close to [being] successful, and it’s not fully clear why it didn’t succeed.”
Iranian hackers had attempted to raise the levels of acceptable chlorine present in Israeli civilian water supplies to a dangerous level. If they had managed to do so, this could have poisoned or even killed hundreds of Israelis.
Alternatively, the high chlorine levels in the water may have triggered an automatic shutdown of the system, meaning that thousands of Israelis could have potentially been left without water during the scorching summer heat.
An Iranian official flatly denied the report in a statement to the times, saying that “Iran cannot politically afford to try to poison Israeli civilians,” adding that such a move would be met with severe retaliation from Israel.
“If Iran did [try to attack water supplies], where is the Israelis’ appropriate response?” he asked.

Israel plans to ask President Joe Biden to approve the delivery of a “game-changing” Israeli laser-based air defense system to Arab countries seeking to fight Iran, an Israel’s Channel 12 News reported this week.
Channel 12 News said that the Iron Beam system, whose prototype was unveiled last year, would be delivered to the UAE and “likely also to Saudi Arabia.” The system is still years away from becoming operational.
The news comes on the heels of reports of secret, U.S.-brokered talks between Israel, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Jordan and Egypt aimed at forming a regional alliance against Iranian aerial threats.
Saudi and Qatari participation is significant, as neither of the countries formally recognizes Israel.
A U.S. official said earlier this month that President Joe Biden’s visit to the Middle East next month would include discussions on “new innovations between our countries that use laser technologies to defeat missiles and other airborne threats.”
On Monday, Defense Minister Benny Gantz seemed to confirm this.
“We are building our broad partnership with more countries in the region to ensure a secure, stable and prosperous Middle East. Among other things, this also includes aerial defense,” Gantz said.
He expressed his hope that Biden’s visit “will have a positive influence and maybe even bring a breakthrough in our ability to act against Iranian aggression in the region.”
Israel is in talks with the U.S. Defense Department to explore American partnership with the Iron Beam system. According to Hebrew media reports, during his visit, Biden will visit the Palmachim Air Base, where the IDF will give him a presentation on the Iron Beam’s capabilities.
The laser system has successfully intercepted missiles, drones, mortars, and anti-tank rockets during tests in April. But it is still years away from becoming operational.
A laser defense system would be significantly less expensive to maintain than the current Iron Dome. While the Qassam rockets used by Hamas are said to cost $300-$800 apiece, one Iron Dome interceptor missile costs around $50,000.
Outgoing Prime Minister Naftali Bennett has described the Iron Beam as a “game changer” that will “bankrupt” Israel’s enemies.

Israel is facing increased pressure from Russia and Iran, including Iran’s proxies. While the Biden administration appears to be disconnected from global issues, Israel and its Sunni Arab allies are increasingly on their own in the face of a determined set of enemies.
Within the gathering storm, Israel enters increased political chaos and another election. An untested and left-center politician, Yair Lapid now takes the reigns of power. His vision for Israel is one of a secular state – removed from its Biblical foundations. Unfortunately for the Jewish State, secularism is the last thing it needs right now.
The next four months may be the most dangerous situation Israel has been in since the Yom Kippur War, when a lack of leadership led to a near defeat at the hands of Egypt and Syria.

Israel is facing increased pressure from Russia and Iran, including Iran’s proxies. While the Biden administration appears to be disconnected from global issues, Israel and its Sunni Arab allies are increasingly on their own in the face of a determined set of enemies.
Within the gathering storm, Israel enters increased political chaos and another election. An untested and left-center politician, Yair Lapid now takes the reigns of power. His vision for Israel is one of a secular state – removed from its Biblical foundations. Unfortunately for the Jewish State, secularism is the last thing it needs right now.
The next four months may be the most dangerous situation Israel has been in since the Yom Kippur War, when a lack of leadership led to a near defeat at the hands of Egypt and Syria.
Today’s danger is far more precarious and requires a heroic leadership – one based on faith – to see it through.

Iran and its proxies are worried about the idea of an Israeli-Arab military alliance built along NATO lines.

Iran and its terrorist proxies have intensified their efforts to sabotage US President Joe Biden’s upcoming visit to the Middle East, which is scheduled to take place in mid-July.
The effort to sabotage the visit comes amid reports that Biden will try to advance Israel-Saudi relations and broker a military alliance between Israel and a number of Arab countries to confront the threats and terror by Iran and its proxies.
According to the reports, Biden is planning to form a regional conference in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The coalition will include the US, Israel, and some Arab countries, including Gulf states, Egypt, Jordan, and Iraq. “The new alliance is intended to contain Iran and, in the first stage, will be based on an air defense system against Iranian missiles and attack drones and cyber security measures,” said Prof. Eytan Gilboa, an expert on US-Israel relations.
The mullahs in Tehran and their proxies, such as the Palestinian Hamas group and the Lebanese Hezbollah militia, appear especially worried about the idea of establishing an Israeli-Arab military alliance built along NATO lines.
They also appear worried that some Arab countries, including Saudi Arabia, may be moving towards normalizing their relations with Israel.
As part of the efforts to thwart normalization between the Arab countries and Israel, Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh travelled to Beirut last week for talks with Hezbollah Secretary-General Hassan Nasrallah.
Haniyeh’s visit to Beirut has outraged many Lebanese and Arabs, who expressed concern that the Hamas-Hezbollah alliance would further destabilize Lebanon and bring it closer to a military confrontation with Israel.
According to Hamas, Haniyeh and Nasrallah “reviewed the political developments in the region and their repercussions on the Palestinian cause, as well as the dangers of the normalization [between Israel and Arab countries].”
Haniyeh and Nasrallah emphasized the need to “develop the program and axis of resistance as the strategic option for restoring the [Palestinian] national rights,” Hamas added.
When Hamas and Hezbollah talk about “develop[ing] the program and axis of resistance,” they are referring to terrorist attacks against Israel. The two terrorist groups have tens of thousands of rockets and missiles that are ready to be fired towards Israel at any moment from the Gaza Strip and Lebanon.
Ali Barakeh, a senior Hamas official, said that Haniyeh’s visit to Lebanon aims at “consulting and coordinating” with Hezbollah about the situation in the region “in light of the talk about forming an Arab-American alliance to confront the axis of resistance.”
Barakeh added, “It’s natural for the Palestinian resistance to consult with the Lebanese resistance in order to confront the American-Zionist policy that it hostile to our nation and the Palestinian cause.”
Referring to the idea of a military build-up against Iran in the region, Haniyeh warned that “what is happening in the region is very dangerous and has gone beyond normalization between Arab countries and Israel.”
In a speech before the Arab-Islamic National Conference in Beirut on June 25, the Hamas leader said, “Normalization [with Israel] is a crime because it harms Palestine and the Arabs; this is an attempt to integrate the Zionist entity into alliances in the region. This scheme targets the resistance in Palestine and Lebanon. The Palestinian people need strategic depth and the unity of the Arab and Islamic nation.”
It is clear that Haniyeh and Nasrallah are seeking to use Lebanon as a launching pad not only to attack Israel, but also as a base for intimidating Saudi Arabia and other Arabs into avoiding alliances with Israel against Iran.
Some Lebanese have expressed outrage that their president, Michel Aoun, received the Hamas leader in the presidential palace in Beirut.
Charles G. Hage, a Lebanese citizen, wrote, “At a time when we are looking for ways out so that the Lebanese do not go hungry, can someone tell us how Lebanon benefits from a public meeting between President Michel Aoun and the head of Hamas’ political bureau, Ismail Haniyeh? Hamas is accused of terrorism and banned in the various countries that Lebanon requests help from. Is Lebanon required to become a new Gaza?”
Haniyeh’s visit to Lebanon, according to Lebanese journalist Sawsan Mhanna, coincided with a visit by Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman to Egypt and Jordan.
Mhanna wrote, “At a time when Egypt and Jordan received Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, and at a time when Egypt and Saudi Arabia signed 14 agreements worth $7.7 billion, Beirut receives Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh. What if Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s plane had landed in Beirut? What if Beirut were free?”
Iran and its proxies were cooperating to prevent the establishment of an anti-Iranian military alliance in the Middle East, wrote Emirati journalist Mohamed Taqi. “After the accelerated Arab moves to establish a Middle East alliance, the terrorist Ismail Haniyeh went to meet with the terrorist Hassan Nasrallah… The puppets of Iran are always against any Arab national and security project.”
It was high time that the US take note that there is no difference between Iran’s various terrorist proxies, noted Iranian-American investigative journalist Lisa Daftari. “When will the Biden admin learn that Hezbollah, Hamas, Al-Qaeda, ISIS, and Iran’s regime are all the same?” Daftari asked.
“Iran occupied Lebanon through its powerful arm, Hezbollah, which took control of Lebanon by the force of Iranian weapons,” remarked Lebanese political commentator Huda al-Husseini.
“This occupation was justified by the absurd claim that these weapons aim to impose a balance of terror with the Israeli enemy and prevent its attacks, when in fact its use was purely internal to terrorize and kill,” Husseini said.
Al-Husseini pointed out that Iran tightened its control over Lebanon after the US war in Iraq in 2003 by getting rid of Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri, who was subsequently slain.
“Hezbollah, which is a faction of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards, took control of state institutions… Iran penetrated Syria after the outbreak of the revolution against the regime in 2011 and Bashar Assad resorted to the Iranian Revolutionary Guards to defend what remained of his regime. Tehran gave orders to Hezbollah to get involved, commit the most horrific massacres, terrorize opponents, and restore the [Syrian] army’s control. This made the Syrian regime in the grip of Tehran. Iran completed its expansion plans through its weapons to Hamas in Gaza and the Houthis in Yemen,” Husseini said.
In a move reflecting growing concern over Iran’s meddling in the internal affairs of Lebanon, several Lebanese politicians and political and religious leaders urged the international community to confront Hezbollah.
They demanded that Hezbollah hand over its weapons to the Lebanese Army and reminded the international community that the terrorist militia was behind the assassination of Rafik Hariri. They also requested that the Lebanese Army be deployed along the border with Israel to prevent another war.
Earlier, the same group of Lebanese warned that Nasrallah should not be responsible for making decisions on war and peace on behalf of his masters in Iran. The group also called for ending the Iranian “occupation” of Lebanon.
The Arabs are evidently aware of the dangers that Iran and its terrorist proxies pose to Lebanon and other countries, especially the Gulf states. They also seem anxious about Iran’s increased efforts to meddle in the internal affairs of the Arab countries as part of the mullahs’ scheme to expand their influence throughout the Middle East.
The meeting between Hamas and Hezbollah leaders in Lebanon should set off alarm bells in Washington: the meeting shows that Iran is taking advantage of the perceived weakness of the Biden administration in failing to confront the mullahs’ covetous schemes in the region.
Without question, this meeting took place on instructions from Tehran ahead of Biden’s visit to Saudi Arabia and Israel. It only remains to be seen whether the Biden administration’s policy of appeasement toward the mullahs enables the Iranians and their proxies to redouble their efforts to spread their expansion, terrorism and bloodshed throughout the Middle East.
