The US has flown two ISIS members to the US to face charges for terrorism and the taking of hostages related to the killing of four Americans. The ISIS members had been held in Iraq under the Law of Armed Conflict and are appearing in federal court in the eastern district of Virginia, according to US officials. Assistant Attorney General for National Security John Demers said it was a solemn day to remember four Americans murdered by ISIS: James Wright Foley, Steven Joel Sotloff, Peter Edward Kassig and Kayla Jean Mueller.
Sotloff was a Jewish journalist who went to Syria to cover the war. Demers noted that Sotloff was a grandson of Holocaust survivors and that he sought to give a voice to those who were vulnerable and victims. Demers said that the US was moved to act because of the families of the fallen and said the US would never rest until justice was done. He vowed to obtain justice for the families and all Americans.

Demers called Alexanda Kotey and El Shafee Elsheikh – the two men brought to the US – terrorists and said they had underestimated American resolve. They will face justice for the “depraved” acts of ISIS. Demers said other members of the ISIS group had faced American arms on the battlefield. “If you survive that you will face American justice in the American courtroom and prospect of many years in prison.” He vowed the US would never forget or quit and pursue ISIS murderers to the ends of the earth.
According to CNN, the two men were charged with conspiracy to commit taking a hostage resulting in death, four counts of hostage-taking resulting in death, one count of conspiracy to murder US citizens, and counts of conspiracy to provide material support to terrorists. Even if they are convicted on some of the charges they could face a very long time in prison.
Sotloff came to Israel in 2005 and studied at The Raphael Recanati International School, Interdisciplinary Center in Herzliya. He also wrote for The Jerusalem Report. He was kidnapped while reporting in Syria in 2013 and murdered by ISIS in 2014. A memorial service was held for him at Pinecrest Florida’s Temple Beth Am synagogue in September 2014. In August 2015, his parents shared a letter with media that had been smuggled out of Syria. “Everyone has two lives. The second one begins when you realize you only have one. Hug each other every day. Don’t fight over stupid things,” Sotloff wrote. Sotloff’s Jewish identity, and the fact he had Israeli citizenship, was hidden during his time as a hostage. Shirley and Arthur Sotloff, his parents, have continued to campaign and speak out about the life of their son.
Federal officials held the press conference on Wednesday and said the ISIS members had been handed to the FBI. Demers thanked the agents and analysts who are the “bedrock” of the department. He thanked prosecutors and others who have worked on the case.
The attorney general also asked to convey the support of the UK which enabled this prosecution to move forward. The UK has opposed the death penalty and it appears the death penalty for the accused is off the table. The US prosecutors say they humbly accept the responsibility for confronting ISIS.

The unique operation to bring the ISIS members to the US was long and complex. They were captured in 2018 and held by the Syrian Democratic Forces. They were held in detention and often gave interviews where they seemed to hold court in civilian clothes, sometimes treated with respect by the journalists who interviewed them. They were treated as curiosities and an almost fetish over meeting ISIS members face-to-face. Later in October 2019 – when the US began to withdraw from part of eastern Syria – the men were apparently transported to Iraq. It took another year to bring them back to the US.
The US says that it coordinates support to family members of hostages and supported families after incidents occur. Also the US says that it won’t rest until all US captives are returned, according to the FBI statements during the press conference.

Bahrain’s Lost Jews Anticipate Return After Peace with Israel
Bahrain’s dwindling community of less than 50 Jews has been offered a new lease on life in the wake of the signing of this month’s historic Abraham Accords, with many in Israel anxious to reconnect to their homeland.
Most former Bahrainis forfeited their passports when making aliyah, so current numbers are unclear. The Jewish Agency has only two formal registrations but numbers are certainly far higher than that. Munir Akirav, 35, born in Givatayim, is one of a small number of Jews of Bahraini origin living in Israel. His mother and her family left Bahrain in 1970.
“My personal connection to Bahrain is based on stories, pictures, videos, from my mother’s family,” he says. “The connection is one of nostalgia and longing for a time of which you were never a part. So, for me it’s a very, very strong feeling,” explains the accountant and credit analyst. China continues to persecute religious minorities, rewriting the Bible to make it conform to Chinese Marxist doctrine, and sending Uighurs Muslims to re-education camps, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has said.
Speaking during a session at the Values Voter Summit 2020, held virtually, Pompeo said: “We watch today the challenge that Christians and Catholics have to practice their faith inside of China.”

China officially recognizes five religions: Buddhism, Taoism, Islam, Protestantism, and Catholicism. The Six Day War was a miraculous win for Israel, as is every moment of Israel’s existence. You can’t explain it. The only way to explain it is with God.
The Six Day War
During the Six Day War, the odds were against Israel. Israel’s enemies tried to destroy it. They were completely outnumbered. The enemies had more weapons, more people. But the impossible happened. Israel won.
Miracle after miracle. Israel even recaptured the Old City of Jerusalem. You cannot explain the victory of the Six Day War without believing that God protected Israel and fought for them. There is just no rational reason that Israel should have triumphed over the enemy! But it did!

Odds Are Always Against Israel
Does it sound familiar? That the odds were against Israel? That seems to be the way history has gone. The odds have been against the Jewish people, yet they continue to exist. Not only do they continue to exist, but they thrive.

 After some extraordinary detective work by the Auschwitz Museum, a briefcase at the memorial has been linked to a child’s shoe which was identified in July as belonging to a little boy called Amos Steinberg. The briefcase, says the Museum, almost certainly belonged to the boy’s father — and he survived the Holocaust. 

Amos Steinberg was born in Prague on June 26 1938. On August 10 1942, Amos, his father Ludvik (or Ludwig) and his mother Ida were first imprisoned in Theresienstadt, and then deported from Czechoslovakia to Auschwitz.
Documents show that mother and son arrived at the concentration camp on October 4 1944 and were almost certainly murdered in a gas chamber on the same day.

But the family was split up at Theresienstadt and Ludvik was apparently sent to Auschwitz on an earlier transport. “We know”, say the Museum, “that he was transferred from Auschwitz to Dachau on October 10 1944. He was liberated in the Kaufering sub-camp”. So six days after his wife and son had been murdered, Ludvik was still being processed in the Nazi system. 

This summer, members of the Steinberg family, who live in Israel, contacted the Museum, and sent additional biographical information and some family photographs.  

Ludvik Steinberg changed his name to Yehuda Shinan and emigrated to Israel in May 1949. He became a teacher and principal of several schools in Israel. He was highly valued and liked by his pupils and teachers who worked with him. He still loved music and worked as a cantor in several synagogues. He also conducted choirs. He died in 1985. His second wife, Chana, whom he had met before the war in Prague, died in 2014. They had six grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

The link between Amos’s shoe and the battered case was not easy to find. The case was already in the Museum collection and documentation showed that at least two men named Ludwig or Ludvik Steinberg were at Auschwitz.  

But barely seen on the case is the number “541”, almost invisible to the naked eye. After infrared technology showed the number, the researchers understood that this was the number under which Amos was registered on the transport list to the Theresienstadt Ghetto. That clue, together with material in the case itself and the date on which the Steinberg family arrived in Auschwitz, has led the Museum to believe that the case did belong to Amos’s father.

The director of the Auschwitz Museum, Dr Piotr Cywinski, said: “I am deeply grateful to the Steinberg family for the information they have given us and for supplementing our knowledge. With this gesture, objects inextricably linked to Auschwitz lose the anonymity weighing down on them — sometimes unbearable — and acquire a deeper, individual significance.

“As an object of great documentary value, the shoe is proof of the suffering of a particular person, and along with thousands of other objects that we preserve at the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial, evidence of the genocide that took place here”.

The plan now is to move the case with Ludwig Steinberg’s name on it to the main exhibition — and the guides at Auschwitz will be told about the heartbreaking link between it and a child’s shoe.

The neo-Nazi Nordic Resistance Movement targeted Jews in Sweden, Denmark, Norway and Iceland with antisemitic campaigns throughout the week leading up to Yom Kippur - the holiest day in the Hebrew calendar.

The explosions in Lebanon have caused death and damage. And who is responsible? Hezbollah! A terrorist organization. An organization that uses human shields. They do not care what happens to the Lebanese people. Hezbollah has caused them to suffer time and time again.

But the international world is not outraged. They are not doing anything to improve the lives of those suffering under Hezbollah.
Israel is trying to bring the world’s attention to the problems that should really be focused on. The stability of the Middle East is at risk because of those who do not care about human life.

Using humans as shields is horrific. It is time the international world cared!

Israel is What’s Right in the MidEast
It is kind of absurd and ironic. The UN and the international world spend so much time criticizing Israel, yet they refuse to spend a breath condemning Hezbollah for what they are doing to the Lebanese people. The Middle East is filled with countries that want to not only destroy Israel, but destroy the Western world and Western values. The world should be thanking Israel for protecting the freedoms that so many hold dear. They should be thanking Israel for standing at the front lines against terrorism.


Israel defends its people. Israel even defends the civilians of its enemies. How many countries do that?

It is time for the world to open its eyes to the truth: The truth about Israel, and the truth about the countries which surround the Jewish state. Israel is what is good and right about the Middle East. It is the lighthouse in a region that is lost at sea.

On Thursday, a bit of the former glory of the Temple was witnessed by three hundred people who took part in the full-dress reenactment of the Sukkot water-libation ceremony.

The group set out from the Dung Gate in the Old City of Jerusalem in the early evening, making its way down the steep steps leading to the Shiloah Spring. Led by six Kohanim (Jewish men descended from Aaron the Priest) and accompanied by music, the crowd sang and danced as they passed from the archaeological remains of the ancient City of David, through an Arab village, to the spring which was used in Temple times.

The Kohanim wore vestments that were made according to Biblical standards for use in the Temple and several played long silver trumpets that had been prepared by the Temple Institute for use in the Third Temple. One Kohen carried a silver vessel used for the libation while the High Priest carried a spectacular gold vessel prepared this year for this year’s service.

“A vessel like this has not been seen since the Temples stood,” Rabbi Hillel Weiss, spokesman for the Sanhedrin and an organizer of the event, told Breaking Israel News.

The procession then climbed to a plaza overlooking the valley, where a model altar had been constructed of wood. The ceremony, carried out precisely as it was performed in the Temple, took place closer to the Temple Mount than any other Temple reenactment thus far. An equal amount of water and wine were poured into two separate containers. The two liquids then spilled out onto the altar through openings in the containers.

In Temple times, a libation of water was made together with the pouring out of wine at the morning service on the last six days of the week-long Sukkot holiday.

Though not explicitly mandated in the Torah, the water libation is part of the oral tradition passed down from Moses. Sukkot is a joyous holiday and the water libation was the focal point of this joy. In the Temple, the ceremony would take fifteen hours with accompanying celebrations lasting all night until the Temple service began again the next morning.

“The basis of Sukkot is universal, bringing bounty to all 70 nations, as symbolized by the 70 bulls brought as sacrifices throughout the festival,” Rabbi Weiss said. “The world is facing many universal threats and coming together is vital. The Temple was a way in which the nations could come together in holiness, each nation bringing their aspect of holiness and connection with Hashem in order to avert these universal threats.”

“This must necessarily be done from a Biblical basis and from Jerusalem,” Rabbi Weiss said, citing a verse from the Prophets.
And the many peoples shall go and say: “Come, Let us go up to the Mount of Hashem, To the House of the God of Yaakov; That He may instruct us in His ways, And that we may walk in His paths.” For instruction shall come forth from Tzion, The word of Hashem from Yerushalayim. Isaiah 2:3
The United Nations imitated this by establishing Israel as one of their first acts but they have strayed since then, the most egregious act being their attacks on Jerusalem which were attempts to delay the building of the Third Temple. President Trump clearly recognizes this and has called on the UN to either fix themselves or to disband.”
At the ceremony Rabbi Azriel Ariel announced the birth of the red heifer.
“This is the beginning of a long process that will, God willing, allow us to purify all of Israel, Rabbi Ariel said. “This is not us forcing God’s hand. We are simply performing mitzvoth (Torah commandments) as given to us in the Torah.”
He explained that the actual preparation of the ashes will be in two years. Until that time, it is considered an egla (calf) by Jewish law. At the age of two, it becomes classified a para  (heifer) and can be sacrificed and burned, it’s ashes used in the purification ritual.
In the meantime, the rabbis will be studying the relevant laws and the Kohanim will be preparing for the ritual.

A 2,000-year-old mikveh weighing 57 tons, which was exposed north of Hamovil Junction, was hoisted by crane and transported on a heavy equipment carrier, on its way to a new permanent site in Kibbutz Hanaton.

Archaeological excavations by the Israel Antiquities Authority began prior to constructing a central interchange at Hamovil Junction in the Lower Galilee, at the initiative of Netivei Yisrael, recently revealed the remains of an agricultural farm from the Second Temple period, including a magnificent mikveh.

This is the first Jewish agricultural farm discovered in the Galilee. The excavations were conducted with the help of workers from the village of Manda, students of pre-military preparatory schools, and volunteers from the surrounding localities, including residents of the nearby Kibbutz Hanaton.

According to the directors of the excavation, Abed Ibrahim and Dr. Walid Atrash of the Israel Antiquities Authority: "The magnificent mikveh unearthed in the excavation is of an ancient type called 'Jerusalem' - with a narrow entrance and a wide staircase, covered with plaster characteristic of Second Temple-period mikvahs. The agricultural farm in which the mikveh is located existed until it was destroyed in an earthquake in 363 CE. It was restored and rebuilt and continued to exist throughout the Byzantine period - until the 6th century CE."

The existence of a tahara facility indicates that the residents of the farm were Jews, who led a religious and traditional way of life, and used to keep tahara as a commandment of the Torah.

The mikvahs were used in daily life among the Jews before the destruction of the Temple and especially after it, to the present day. During the Roman period, mikvahs were built in Jewish villages and farms near agricultural installations such as oil presses, work houses, and wineries. Prior to working with agricultural produce, farmers used to immerse in the mikveh to handle agricultural produce, such as olive oil and wine, in purity.

According to Ibrahim and Dr. Atrash, “The discovery of the mikveh in Beit Hava changes what we knew about the way of life of Jews during the Second Temple period. Until now, since Jewish farms were not known in the Galilee, it was common to think that Jews in Roman times did not settle on farms outside villages or cities. The discovery of the Jewish agricultural farm away from the village of Sheikhin and the largest Jewish city at the time, Tzipori, shows that Jews also lived on agricultural farms, which may have served as the agricultural hinterland of the city of Tzipori. According to the archaeologists, "the complex operation was made possible in large part thanks to the understanding of the importance of the finds and the cooperation shown by Netivei Yisrael, which even donated its heavy machinery for the operation."

Seventeen hundred years have passed since the farm was destroyed in an earthquake, and about fourteen hundred years since the place was completely abandoned, and a huge bridge began to be built in the green valley that would carry a bypass road at Hamovil Junction. One side of the bridge was built at the foot of the hill, and it needed to be anchored. To do this, deep foundation trenches needed to be dug in the rock at the foot of the hill, where the mikveh was exposed.


Since it was impossible to preserve the mikveh on the site, the idea arose to detach the installation from the rock and copy it to a protected site for display, for the benefit of the public.

The Israel Antiquities Authority, together with members of Kibbutz Hanaton, joined Operation Mikveh. The residents, who even launched a mass funding campaign for the cause, proposed placing the ancient mikveh next to the kibbutz's active mikveh. In cooperation with the Israel Antiquities Authority, the Ministry of Jerusalem and Heritage, Netivei Israel, the Jezreel Valley Regional Council and the residents, the necessary funding was obtained to move the ancient mikveh.

In the past week, preparatory work for the extraordinary transport operation was carried out with the help of Hordus Engineering and accompanied by the Conservation Authority of the Israel Antiquities Authority. The mikveh was first hewn on all sides, detached from its base, and surrounded by a steel cage to maintain it and allow it to be hoisted. Today, to the cheers of the kibbutz children and residents, it was hoisted in the air and sent to its new place.

Meir Hajbi, volunteers as a United Hatzalah EMT when he isn’t teaching or with his own family. Six years ago, he assisted Shir’s mother in her delivery and now once again received the boy when he walked into Hajbi’s first-grade class one month ago. “It is very moving for me to see this unique boy walk into my classroom every morning with his knapsack on his shoulder,” said Hajbi prior to the lockdown that resulted in the closure of Israel’s education system before Rosh Hashanah.

Delivering his Rosh Hashanah message to the community, he said the sound of the shofar would “signal not just the arrival of a new year, but also the end of one that many would like to forget.”
In a year dominated by coronavirus, which has caused the deaths of more than 500 members of the community – and over 40,000 across the country, he said the virus “for reasons we still don’t fully understand, has hit Jews of Britain particularly hard.”

That leaves a vicious fight for the 120% of the middle-of-the-roaders who will determine the election.

If the election is based on policy, Donald Trump should win handily. If it is based on style, both sides should lose. Donald Trump’s infantile name-calling should not allow him to even win a primary, let alone the Presidency. But, he has mastered the art of working the media to grab maximum attention at no charge. But, Joe Biden’s obvious lack of mental acuity should also be reason enough for him not making it on to the ballot. The state of the American political system has reached a low point. But, this will probably change by 2024 as a new leadership will take over in Congress and the Senate. The American public will probably crave a return to civility after so much rancor and discord in Washington. A unifying candidate will probably be the wining candidate. But, until then, things will be rather rocky.

This week, 80 years ago, the German Luftwaffe began a systematic bombing of London, which lasted for a terrifying eight months and five days. More than a million homes were destroyed or damaged in what became known as the London Blitz — and thousands of civilians were killed or injured.

Those who have first-hand memories of the Blitz today are in their late 80s or early 90s, and were children during the Blitz — which was carried out in other major British cities, too. Many of the children were evacuated from the capital — though some did return to London, both during the Blitz, and after it ended in May 1941.


Among those who were sent out of London by their parents were Ron Shelley and his little sister, Anne. Today Ron, a national vice-president of Ajex, is an MBE for his services to the Jewish community.

Back in 1940, however, Ron was 10 and Anne was six years old when their parents sent them out of London to keep them safe. They went, at the outbreak of the war in 1939, to Virginia Water, Surrey, only about 20 miles from London, from their home in Stepney Green.

“We assembled in a village hall while people walked round to choose which children they would take home. But nobody picked us, so the billeting officer found Mr and Mrs Hammond, and we were both taken to their home”, said Ron.

The children’s parents visited whenever they could. Ron’s father, a ladies’ hairdresser, became an ambulance driver during the Blitz, a scary and risky part of civil defence. Later, despite being 38, he was called up and sent to a unit in India, while the children’s mother continued war work in England. The Shelley children remained out of London for most of the war, more than five years for Ron and around four for his sister.

The Shelley family were lucky: their London tenement flat was not caught in the bombing, though plenty of their Stepney neighbours were not as fortunate.

And though Ron was in Virginia Water, the fires and results of the Blitz bombing could be seen from where he was. “We knew what was going on — one night in December, 1940, we could see the flames in London”.

Tragically, the bombing was not confined to London. One day at school in Surrey, the headmaster announced that Dan Plant, a pupil who sat at the next desk to Ron Shelley, had been killed, the night before.

Ron explained: “There was a German bomber which was being attacked by a British Mosquito fighter plane, and instead of proceeding to London the German pilot dropped his bombs where he was — over Weybridge, and Dan and his whole family died as a result.”

Ruth Glassman is today a Jewish Care Meals on Wheels volunteer, though her work has been disrupted by the coronavirus pandemic.

She said: “My war memories are very blurred —I was a very little girl.

“We had an Anderson shelter in the garden and a reinforced table, a Morrison shelter, in the basement, thought to be the safest part of the house. It was bought because I was too frightened to go into the Anderson shelter; I remember, [during the Blitz], my father used to cuddle me under the table, while my mother went into the Anderson shelter with the rest of the occupants of the house.

Ruth’s father and her uncle Julie became night-time fire-watchers throughout the Blitz, reporting where bombs had landed so that the fire-fighters could attend directly. During the day, her father worked in a factory owned by another uncle, which made sandbags, vital to civil defence work.

One evening, at which point Ruth had been evacuated to her aunt and uncle’s house in Brighton, they told her that her parents’ house had been bombed. “They said that my parents and baby sister, who I hardly knew, were on their way to Brighton. I was delighted that my parents were coming and I was allowed to stay up late to see them. My mother was alone in Filey Road when a bomb hit the house. It was lucky she went under the stairs with my baby sister, as the only part of the house left standing was the staircase”.

Jeffrey Glassman, Ruth’s husband, also has very early childhood memories of the Blitz. He was born in December 1936, so was not quite three when war broke out in September 1939.

He said: “I remember standing in the playground of my primary school, Craven Park School, wearing an overcoat, with a name and address label attached, and with a gas mask on a string, over my shoulder. I must have been about four years old, and we were living at 32 Moundfield Road, Stamford Hill, where most of the Glassman family lived.

“Because of the Blitz, we had to be evacuated. We travelled around quite a bit. [My sister] Linda was born in November 1940 in Worcester, where we lived with a lady named Mrs Potter. The house had a large garden, and I can remember Mrs Potter showed me how to skin a rabbit. We also moved to Stevenage, and Warrington, where I remember there was a coal mine.

“We had an Anderson shelter in the garden of Moundfield Road and I remember sitting in it with Mum and Linda. Mum used to make sandwiches for us to eat in the shelter, as we often spent hours there. We must have moved back to London at some time. I remember us sitting under the staircase at home during an air raid, and also sleeping in underground tube stations with many other families on the platform.

“A V-1 rocket, called a Buzz Bomb or Doodlebug, fell on Moundfield Road and caused extensive damage. You could hear the buzzing noise as it flew overhead, and you knew you were safe as long as you could hear that. The time to worry was when it stopped buzzing, as that was when it fell to the ground. Fortunately, we were away from London at the time. Many houses were completely flattened by the rocket, and our house had all the windows blown out, the roof blown off, and the bath from the upstairs bathroom was found in the kitchen.

“I was told that a lady in the house next door had died in the blast from the rocket. Two young cousins, Anita and Betty, were killed in the Blitz, while they were at the doorway to an air raid shelter. Their house was in the next street to ours, Castlewood Road.

Jeffrey Glassman added: “The war was a terrible time to live through, particularly difficult for the women, who had no support from husbands serving abroad. They had to make the best of things with very little food or money, raising children, being evacuated and moving around the country to wherever they could stay. The Blitz meant bombing raids every night, nights spent in cold dark air raid shelters, houses destroyed, loved ones killed”.

Middle East Dynamics
Aish.com: Israel’s new peace deal with the UAE is a seismic shift – opening up Israeli technology and export to the second-largest economy in the Middle East. The UAE agreement also weakens the BDS movement as Arab countries move away from boycott. Most of all, the agreement puts to rest the myth that peace in the Middle East revolves around first solving the Palestinian issue.

How do you envision Middle East dynamics unfolding over the next few years, and how does the UAE deal impact the Palestinian stalemate?


 
Danon: Unfortunately, I don't see a Palestinian leadership willing to negotiate directly with Israel. So today we have to speak about a new paradigm. In the past, in order to advance Israel regionally, the paradigm was to first solve the Palestinian conflict. Today it's the exact opposite. We are working with the Arab world and they will help us negotiate with the Palestinians. Today we have full diplomatic relations with Jordan, Egypt, the UAE – and other countries may follow soon. Then maybe we can sit down together and try to resolve the Palestinian conflict.

Voting Blocs
Aish.com: The wall of U.N. headquarters is engraved with the visionary words of Isaiah – "They shall beat their swords into plowshares" – hearkening to the U.N.'s original, noble mandate to promote peace and justice. Yet the entire apparatus has been hijacked by corrupt Third World forces – a voting bloc that results in Israel being condemned by more U.N. resolutions than any other nation in the world. Former Israeli Ambassador to the U.N. Abba Eban once said that if the U.N. introduced a resolution declaring that “the earth was flat and Israel flattened it,” it would pass by an overwhelming majority.

Over the past five years, how did you manage to shift sentiment toward Israel in such a hostile environment?

Danon: When the U.N. was established after the Second World War, it had a clear agenda to prevent war and to promote dialogue. Unfortunately, the U.N. today is not the U.N. that was established 75 years ago. Today you see anti-Israel resolutions in a proportion that doesn't make sense. Twenty-two resolutions every year condemn Israel, and only one resolution condemns Iran. This is absurd.

By focusing on three pillars – Judaism, Israel, and innovation – we changed the reality at the U.N. The best example is when I ran for chairmanship of the U.N. legal committee. It was a secret ballot, and I received the support of 109 member states. Only 44 voted against me. I became the first Israeli ever to chair a permanent U.N. committee. This is proof that change is possible.

U.S-Israel Relations
Aish.com: At the U.N., the United States and Israel vote in concert 88 percent of the time; by contrast, other Mideast "allies" like Egypt and Saudi Arabia vote with the U.S. less than 10 percent of the time. In fact, U.S. State Department figures show that for decades, Israel votes with the U.S. more than Great Britain, France, Canada or any other country in the world.

Yet Israel has always walked a fine line in asserting its own national priorities. Ben Gurion defied American pressure by declaring statehood; Levi Eshkol boldly defied the U.S. with the 1967 preemptive strike; and Menachem Begin was condemned by the U.S. for annexing the Golan Heights and destroying the Iraqi nuclear reactor.

In the past, you’ve spoken against appeasing the United States, saying that “U.S. pressure on Israel hurts Israel and does nothing to advance peace.” This was a theme of your 2012 book, Israel: The Will to Prevail. Having spent five years in such a sensitive diplomatic post, working closely with three American ambassadors to the U.N., has your view of this matter evolved?

Danon: Whenever Israel makes decisions by itself without asking permission from friends and allies, in the long run we gain the respect of the world that these were the right decisions. Aside from the examples you mention, Prime Minister Olmert, whose political positions I don't support, deserves credit for his decision in 2007 to attack the Syrian nuclear reactor. President George W. Bush writes in his memoir about the day he told Olmert not to attack – yet after Israel demolished the reactor, Bush’s respect for Israel increased.

So you don't always have to appease your allies. We have to do what's good for Israel and the Jewish people in the long run.

Biblical Rights
Aish.com: In 2010, the U.N.’s cultural arm, UNESCO, voted to declare Rachel's Tomb a mosque, and decreed that preserving it as a Jewish site is a violation of international law. Then in 2016, the White House helped orchestrate the passage of Resolution 2334, saying that Jewish presence in the Old City of Jerusalem – including the Western Wall – flagrantly violates international law.

In response to such hateful denials of the truth, you donned a kippah and delivered a speech at the U.N. – which subsequently went viral – speaking about the land of Israel as the cradle of Jewish identity. You read in Hebrew from the Bible, then held it aloft and declared: "This is our deed to the land."

Also, during your tenure as Israeli Ambassador, you brought over 100 U.N. Ambassadors on trips to Poland and Israel – first showing them gas chambers in Auschwitz, then Hamas terror tunnels in Israel’s south and Hezbollah terror tunnels in the north (dug under the nose of U.N. peacekeepers).

How does Israel’s religious and historic identity impact your approach to global diplomacy, and how does that all affect Israeli security?

Danon: From a Jewish perspective, I led a new wave at the U.N. First, I am a very proud Jew. So I brought Judaism into the halls of the U.N. I brought kosher food to the cafeterias, got Yom Kippur to be recognized, and educated other ambassadors about Jewish holidays, traditions and culture.

Not only did I bring Israel to the U.N., but I brought the U.N. to Israel. Together with these 100 U.N. ambassadors, I traveled the land and walked through the Old City of Jerusalem. In seeing these Jewish historic sites, I asked them, “How can you now say that we have no connection to the land, as claimed by U.N. resolutions and the Security Council?”

I gained the respect of many U.N. ambassadors, including Muslim ambassadors, because I proved our rights to the land. I spoke from my heart and read the biblical account of God’s promise to Abraham. Whether Christian, Muslim or Jew, it is the same scripture, so you can't argue with that. This is our deed to the land. If you have something else, prove it.

Aish.com: Over the past five years, Israel’s relationship with the U.S. has had its ups and downs. Take us behind the scenes.

Danon: During the vote on Resolution 2334 that condemned our presence in Jerusalem, I felt alone with so many of our friends voting against us. On the other hand, I had the support of millions of Jews, Christians and even Muslims who believe in our rights to the land. And I knew that we will overcome this shameful resolution.

Look at what has happened since then – the U.S. Embassy has been moved to Jerusalem, the U.S. recognized Israeli sovereignty on the Golan Heights, and we are now cementing our presence in the region with the UAE peace treaty. So I think we should be optimistic and continue to speak about our rights to the land.

Some people in Israel think that we can appease others by apologizing all day long. We should not apologize for our birthright, our connection to the land. We need to proudly speak out more.

Global Ambassador
Aish.com: How does Israel as the “start-up nation” aid in the cause of international diplomacy?

Danon: When I brought the ambassadors to Israel, I showed them not only the security challenges, but also the opportunities – the innovation, technology, and start-up companies. We Israelis sometimes make the mistake of focusing too much on security. Most people around the world are lucky and don't have to constantly deal with terrorism. People care more about sustainable development – water, food, health. So we have to change the narrative and show the world our capabilities on those soft issues. We can do a real tikkun olam by sending our technology and innovation to the entire world, to build bridges and help them with our know-how.

Aish.com: You brought these ambassador delegations to the rooftop of Aish HaTorah, overlooking the Temple Mount, Mount of Olives, and Western Wall. How would you describe the experience?

Danon: One of the highlights of the trip is coming to Jerusalem and feeling holiness in the Old City. When you stand on the Aish rooftop, one of the most beautiful spots in Israel, you feel the presence of God. You cannot ignore it.

Jewish Refugees
Aish.com: Since the founding of the State of Israel, hundreds of U.N. resolutions have dealt specifically with Palestinian refugees. Your father left Egypt in 1950, among the 850,000 Jewish refugees from Arab countries following the establishment of the State – yet no U.N. resolution has ever referenced the plight of these displaced Jews. What progress is being made at the U.N. to recognize these forgotten Jewish refugees?

Danon: There are more Jewish refugees from Arab countries than there are Muslim refugees who left Palestine. My father left property in Alexandria, Egypt, and many people left everything they had behind. We are not seeking compensation. Rather we demand recognition that this will be written in the history books. So I drafted a resolution about this. Unfortunately, with Covid-19 everything got shut down at the U.N. But I'm certain that Israel will continue to push forward the resolution I drafted.

The Gaza Strip
Aish.com: Throughout your career, you’ve staked much political capital on Israeli policy in Gaza – opposing Ariel Sharon’s 2005 Gaza Disengagement, and in 2014 you were fired as Deputy Minister of Defense for criticizing the handling of Operation Protective Edge. Yet the problem remains unsolved – last year, your hometown of Moshav Mishmeret was hit by a rocket from Gaza, and arson-balloons are used daily in cross-border attacks. How would you solve the Gaza situation – both from the security and humanitarian standpoints?

Danon: I distinguish between the people of Gaza and the Hamas regime that rules Gaza. I feel bad for the people in Gaza, and I pray for the day that there will be a real Palestinian leadership we can negotiate with.

Ironically, at the U.N. I occasionally found myself fighting for the rights of Gazans – against the Palestinian Authority representatives. For example, there was a crisis of electricity in Gaza and some countries wanted to transfer funds to assist, so I helped coordinate this with the U.N. professionals. But the Palestinian representatives of President Abbas in Ramallah tried to block the initiative, hoping to deny the people of Gaza more electricity. That’s who we are dealing with.

Threat of Nuclear Iran
Aish.com: Iranian leaders have threatened to “wipe the Israeli cancer off the map.” The UAE deal gives Israel a better geographic launch-point for any future attack against Iranian nuclear facilities. On the other hand, the Europeans have now allowed the lifting of an arms embargo to Iran. In today’s complex geopolitical environment, what should be Israel’s strategy for stopping Iran from moving full-force to develop nuclear weapons?

Danon: We will do whatever is necessary to stop Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons, and this is not only Israel. U.S. leaders speak forcefully about this, and when I visited the UAE three years ago, most of the discussions focused on the threat from Iran. So it is a regional issue, and we are very determined to stop Iran.

Aish.com: There is talk about Iranian “sleeper cells” operating across the globe. How concerned should the United States be about the Iranian nuclear threat?

Danon: Today with globalization, if you have a nuclear bomb, you can pack it in a suitcase, fly to South America, and within two days it will be in California. So yes, I think everyone should be worried. No one wants the leaders of Iran to have nuclear weapons, because we saw what they did in the past. Look at the attempted attacks on multiple Israeli embassies, and the deadly bombing that destroyed the Jewish Center in Buenos Aires, Argentina – the explosives and terrorists were all from Iran. So, God forbid, if they get nuclear weapons, just imagine what they might do.

Political Future
Aish.com: In both 2007 and 2014, you challenged Bibi Netanyahu for Likud party leadership. Now that you’re back in Israel, how are you positioning yourself in politics?

Danon: I’ve returned to Israel with a lot of passion, knowledge, experience and connections. I am eager to continue to serve my people as a public servant. I support the prime minister, and I stand behind him. But we all know that he will not stay forever, and when the day will come, I definitely see the option of running for an even higher position that I had as a government minister. In the same way I was able to win in the U.N. halls, God willing, I will be able to win also in the political halls here in Israel.

Aish.com: When you were appointed to the role of UN Ambassador in 2015, Haaretz listed "six reasons to worry” – saying that "Danon's appointment throws Israel off the diplomatic cliff." What do you regard as your biggest achievement to silence the critics?

Danon: Because I come from the right side of the political spectrum and my ideology is clear, they doubted that I will succeed. I don't expect them to apologize, and actually I should thank them. Because of the low expectations, it was very easy to prove them wrong. I showed that you can stay loyal to your values – supporting our rights to Israel and being a proud Jew – and still gain the support and respect of the nations. That is the lesson we taught the many skeptics.

Aish.com: What do you regard as a particular challenge you encountered at the U.N., where in retrospect you could have handled the situation differently?

Danon: One issue I regret is that we didn't run for a seat on the Security Council. When a seat became available in 2018, I lobbied for that and tried to convince my colleagues in Jerusalem to give me the support to run for the position. At the end of the day, they decided that we don't have the budget and the manpower. Looking back, we should have pushed more for that. It's about time that Israel, a full member state of the U.N., deserves a seat on the Security Council.

Conspiracy theorist David Icke, who believes the world is run by giant shape-shifting reptiles, has addressed hundreds of anti-lockdown protesters in Trafalgar Square.

The former football commentator, who is banned from Australia for Holocaust denial, recently faced accusations of antisemitism from anti-racism and Jewish groups.


In May the Center for Countering Digital Hate (CCDH)  unveiled a report  alleging Icke is spreading “dangerous misinformation” about Covid-19, including the claim that “Sabbatian Frankists” and the Rothschilds are behind, or helped plan, the outbreak.

He also believes Israel is using the pandemic to “test its technology”.

Also among those present at the “Unite for Freedom” rally on Saturday were the brother of the former Labour Party leader, Piers Corbyn.

Prior to the demonstration, in which protesters displayed anti-mask and anti-vaccination placards, police “strongly advised” people to avoid large gatherings for their own safety. “We are still in the middle of a global pandemic,” it said. “If you attend a gathering of more than 30 people, you may be committing an offence, which is punishable by a fine. We all need to continue to do our part to prevent the spread of the virus.”

Icke’s 1995 book, And the Truth Shall Set You Free, focused on a global conspiracy by “Rothschilds and Rockefellers” and contained a chapter questioning aspects of the Holocaust and criticising society for suppressing “alternative information to the official line of the Second World War.”

Several Jewish schools reported their “best ever” years as nationally the grades surged, the government having earlier cancelled students’ summer exams as part of a suite of measures designed to stop the spread of coronavirus.

Exams regular Ofqual had tried to moderate the marks using an algorithm, but when this was widely discredited it prompted an embarrassing U-turn on grading method, reverting to teachers’ verdicts of pupils’ abilities. The confusion prompted a vicious blame game involving ministers, unions, and bureaucrats – and stress for students.

Nationally, the number awarded Grade 7 or above rose from a fifth to a quarter, while those getting the best marks shot up by almost 40 percent on last year, as policy chiefs said the crisis had sparked runaway grade inflation that would only hurt future years’ students.

This is the third year of the new 1-9 grading system, with 7 the equivalent of the old A-grade, 8 the equivalent to an A* and 9 amounting to an A** rating.

Cross-denominational New Barnet school JCoSS said more students than ever had scored Grade 9 (19 percent, compared to 18 percent last year), while at fee-paying Immanuel Year 11 students had “the best grades in the College’s history”.

However, Hasmonean – the best-performing Jewish secondary last year – refused to publish its GCSE grades, issuing only a comment from Hasmonean Multi-Academy Trust chief executive Andrew McClusky about 2020 having been “extremely challenging”. The school issued a financial warning three month ago.

At Yavneh in Borehamwood, results spring-boarded back to the College’s best, with 54 percent graded 7-9, compared to 44 percent in 2018, and 50 percent in 2018, while at Kantor King Solomon (KKS) in Barkingside, 31 percent of grades were awarded 7-9, with three quarters at Grade 4 or more.

Pipping Yavneh to the post however was JFS, where 57 percent of grades were 7-9, with 37 percent graded 9-8. More than a fifth of its Maths and Religious Studies students got a Grade 9, while a third of its science students could do no better. Like JCoSS, the school said that “a small number of grades were moderated up by the exam board”.

At Immanuel, 88 percent of grades were 6 or higher, an improvement of four percent on last year, with 34 students averaging Grade 8 or higher, but while there was happiness at the results, most headteachers made reference in their comments to the chaos surrounding students’ grading this year.

KKS headteacher, Hannele Reece, said it had been “a very difficult year for students” with no exams this summer, while Yavneh head Spencer Lewis spoke of “an incredibly difficult six months”.

He added: “The constant changes in government and exam board policies and approach over recent days have been very unfair on the pupils”.

Likewise, Immanuel’s headmaster Gary Griffin slammed “government incompetence” which JCoSS head Patrick Moriarty said had led to “huge uncertainty and difficulty, especially during the past week’s confusion over the awarding of results”.

He added: “We advocated strongly for the use of teacher grades… We are pleased that the change of policy came in time to reward these students with clarity and greater fairness.”

Jewish families also were left fuming at the way this year’s results were handled, with West Finchley resident Les Talisman, whose daughter Leah got the grades she needed, describing it as “a fiasco” causing unnecessary stress.

He said: “This Government handled it so badly. Why they never went for teacher-assessed grades, or even mock results in the first place beggars belief. Pupils feel let down and rightly so. It has brought unnecessary stress to many families.”

Talisman, whose mother-in-law once taught at Immanuel, adding: “I imagine this fiasco has come at great financial cost to the country, and think it will have a long-lasting effect in people’s minds. This incompetent shower of arrogant politicians won’t be in government past the next general election.”

A wide-ranging survey of Black, Asian and minority ethnic (BAME) adults across Great Britain has found pockets of anti-Jewish sentiment were outweighed by positive views among Muslim respondents.
Nearly half of all Muslims surveyed (45 percent) were found to perceive Jewish people positively, according to an online survey of 1,001 BAME adults, released by the anti-racism charity HOPE Not Hate on Thursday.
But the survey also found the highest proportion of anti-Jewish views among Muslim respondents (18 percent), followed by atheists (11 percent), Christians (5 percent) and Hindus (4 percent).

Muslims, who were the most negatively viewed group overall, were also more likely to perceive Jewish or Hindu extremism as a threat (both 31 percent).

The weighted sample survey, conducted in July by polling company Focaldata, does not include any data about Jewish public opinion owing to a small sample size in the community, HOPE Not Hate said.

Stronger action on hate crime was seen as the best way to improve community relations (35 percent), together with increasing anti-racism education in schools (34 percent).

Other popular solutions included a crackdown on extremism across communities (25 percent), initiatives to bring together people from different backgrounds (22 percent) and holding outlets to account for publishing racist material (22 percent).

HOPE not Hate deputy director Jemma Levene said the figures shouldn’t be allowed “to be used to startle people in our community.”

“They were substantially outweighed by positive feelings,” she said. “Of course, we shouldn’t shy away from honest and difficult conversations about antisemitism, but we see time and time again that when different groups have the opportunity to interact in meaningful ways, their mutual views of each other improve exponentially.”

“Our organisation’s experience shows us clearly that the majorities of both Muslim and Jewish communities wish to live together in friendship and peace, so good interfaith and intercommunity interactions are more important than ever so we can all learn not just how to build together but also disagree without falling prey to prejudice,” she added.

(OPINION) Michael Snyder – Last week’s surprise announcement of a peace deal between Israel and the United Arab Emirates caught just about everyone by surprise. I hadn’t heard anything about a potential deal in the works, and the mainstream media in the western world was completely blindsided by the deal.
 
But this has become Israel’s pattern in recent decades. The Oslo Accords, Israel’s peace deal with Jordan and other agreements were negotiated under a cloak of total secrecy because officials didn’t want the public sentiment to potentially destroy negotiations.
President Trump is touting this as a major diplomatic victory, and he is hoping that it will sway some votes in November.  At this juncture, Trump is trailing badly in most polls and he needs another miracle as we witnessed in 2016. But it was really Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that was the driving force behind this deal.
He has been seeking to build relations with the UAE for many, many years, and this deal is the culmination of those efforts. In order to get this deal, however, Netanyahu had to agree not to annex any land in the West Bank…
 
The United Arab Emirates has normalized relations with Israel in a historic US-brokered deal that “suspends” Israeli annexation of occupied land sought by the Palestinians for their future state. The surprise agreement, initially announced by the US president, Donald Trump, makes the UAE the first Gulf country and only the third Arab nation in the world to have active diplomatic ties with Israel, joining Egypt and Jordan.
 
This is a very odd development because too many people it seemed like Netanyahu was dead set on annexing portions of Judea and Samaria. In fact, he specifically promised to do so during the last election. Could it be possible that all of that rhetoric was just a negotiating ploy?
 
If Israel had really gone ahead and annexed those lands, it would have killed any international efforts to create a Palestinian state. But now that annexation is completely dead, the potential for a “peace deal” that would create a Palestinian state is very much alive.
 
According to the New York Times, the relationship between Israel and the UAE “had been building quietly for years”, and according to a British news source this peace agreement will also open a door for “deals on direct flights, security, telecommunications, energy, tourism, and healthcare”…

(OPINION) ETH – An alleged “Bible Code Expert” named Rabbi Mattityahu Glazerson has come out recently and claimed that within just hours after the newly-minted peace agreement between Israel and the United Arab Emirates was announced, he was able to discover what he called “the best appearance” of the Hebrew word ichud which means unity and the Hebrew for Emirates.
“It’s unbelievable. It came once in the Torah in a significant way,” he noted. Glazerson claims he found the codes where God told Abraham that Isaac would be born to him and Sara and that, though Ishmael (the Biblical ancestor of Arabs) would be blessed with material prosperity and large populations, God’s covenant would remain eternally with the descendants of Isaac (the Jewish nation).
Then God said: “No, Sarah your wife shall bear you a son, and you shall call his name Isaac; I will establish My covenant with him for an everlasting covenant, and with his descendants after him. And as for Ishmael, I have heard you. Behold, I have blessed him, and will make him fruitful, and will multiply him exceedingly. He shall beget twelve princes, and I will make him a great nation.

The rabbi claimed that 840, which is the numerical value of shematicha (I have heeded you), corresponds to the number of years the Arabs would have control of the Land of Israel. This word appears in the Hebrew in Genesis 17:20. BIN states:
“In other words, embedded in the Hebrew is a promise that God will bless Ishmael’s descendants with dominion over the Land of Israel for 840 years. We find this hint in the exact verse where God promises Abraham that, although the eternal covenant rests with Isaac and his descendants, the descendants of Ishmael will also benefit from Divine favor".

Anti-fascist campaigners in the UK have warned of a virulent new far-right group that spreads Holocaust denial in its efforts to push a white nationalist agenda.

Researchers at Hope Not Hate (HNH) reported this week on the threat from Patriotic Alternative (PA), an antisemitic group with neo-Nazi adherents created in 2019 by Mark Collett, the former head of publicity for the British National Party.
HNH researcher Simon Murdoch said: “Collett is a longstanding antisemite who has spoken sympathetically of Nazi Germany, described the Holocaust as the ‘alleged extermination of six million Jews’, and has regularly collaborated with David Duke, a former leader in the Ku Klux Klan.”

PA is described in the report as “a racist far-right organisation with antisemitism at its very core” which aims to combat what it says is the “replacement and displacement” of white Britons by people who “have no right to these lands”.

Its supporters hold fast to a conspiracy theory that Jewish elites are the driving force behind this ‘replacement and displacement’, with PA’s manifesto saying: “No minority should ever be allowed to wield disproportionate power over the British people or hold disproportionate influence over or within the government.”

In a nod to some well-worn antisemitic tropes, the group warns of “unscrupulous lenders or predatory providers of financial services” and says Britain “should never be used as a pawn for foreign powers”.

Several members were unabashed about their Holocaust denial in group messages, the HNH report detailed. One wrote: “Public Service Announcement: A factoid is a claim that is widely accepted as fact through repetition but isn’t necessarily (and often isn’t) true, such as the Holocaust.”

Another described the Holocaust as “the single most overhyped event in history,” adding: “The West has been blinded since 1945 by the Holocaust story but this is wearing off.” Yet another said: “We’re finding out that more and more Holocaust survivors… Survived. Almost like as if the Holocaust never happened…”

Collett, a proud fan of National Socialism, published a book in 2017 describing the “alleged extermination of six million Jews”, adding: “When it comes to the notion of white guilt, nothing is pushed more strongly.”

Murdoch said: “PA are smaller and less influential than they claim and their longevity is uncertain, but they are certainly one of the fastest rising threats in the UK far right.”

Israel and the United Arab Emirates on Thursday announced the “normalisation of relations” between them – with Israel agreeing not to declare sovereignty over the West Bank and Jordan Valley as a result.

The landmark moment, delivered in a joint statement together with the United States, heralds a new era of diplomatic and economic connections between Jerusalem and the Gulf states, and took political analysts by surprise.


The letter, posted online by Donald Trump, said Israel and the UAE “share a similar outlook regarding threats and opportunities in the region,” in reference to Iran-sponsored militias and regimes.

Describing it as “an historic diplomatic breakthrough” that required “courage” from both Israel and Abu Dhabi, they said agreements would be signed in the coming week that would cover investment, tourism, direct flights, security, telecoms, energy, healthcare, the environment “and other areas of mutual benefit”.


It will also lead to the creation of an Emirati embassy in Israel and an Israeli embassy in Abu Dhabi – a first for both Gulf states and Jerusalem – while stipulating a halt on Israeli sovereignty claims, in order to pursue further bilateral relations.

“As a result of this historic breakthrough and at the request of President Trump with the support of the United Arab Emirates, Israel will now suspend declaring sovereignty over areas outlined in the President’s Vision for Peace and focus its efforts now on expanding ties with other countries in the Arab and Muslim world.”

ANALYSIS: US-Israel-UAE deal is a win-win-win. 

Board of Deputies’ president Marie van der Zyl said: “I warmly welcome the normalisation of ties between Israel and the United Arab Emirates. This is a historic development and an important step for prosperity, peace and security in the region.”

Israel and UAE recently raised eyebrows by agreeing to work together on medical efforts to combat the coronavirus, including a vaccine, and said they would “immediately expand and accelerate cooperation” in this area.

It remains to be seen whether other Sunni Muslim kingdoms in the Gulf will follow the UAE’s lead in normalising relations with Israel, but the three signatories said they were “confident that additional diplomatic breakthroughs” in the region.

Crown Prince Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, 59, has ruled the Emirate of Abu Dhabi since 2004 and been the region’s most active in facilitating external relations with countries such as France, Singapore and Russia, even mediating between Washington and Moscow, while in 2010 he hosted The Queen.

He is a driving force behind military efforts to remove the Iran-backed Houthi militia from Yemen and voiced anger at President Barack Obama’s nuclear deal with Iran.

A large blast has hit the Lebanese capital, Beirut, causing widespread damage and injuring many people, officials say.

It is not yet clear what caused the explosion in the port area of the city. Video posted online showed a large mushroom cloud and destroyed buildings.

Hospitals are said to be overwhelmed by casualties.

It comes at a sensitive time with the country's economic collapse reigniting old tensions.

Tensions are also high ahead of the verdict in a trial over the killing of ex-PM Rafik Hariri in 2005. A UN tribunal is due to issue its verdict in the trial of four suspects in the murder by car bomb of Hariri on Friday.

Lebanon's health minister, Hamad Hasan, has spoken of many injuries and extensive damage.

Reuters news agency quotes sources as saying 10 bodies have been pulled from the wreckage.

The cause of the explosion is still not known, but some reports suggest it may have been an accident. Lebanon's National News Agency reported a fire breaking out at what it called an explosives depot at the port.

Local media showed people trapped beneath rubble. A witness described the first explosion as deafening. Video footage showed wrecked cars and blast-damaged buildings.

The latest reports come amid political tension in Lebanon, with street demonstrations against the government's handling the worst economic crisis since the 1975-1990 civil war.

There has also been tension on the border with Israel, which said last week that it had thwarted an attempt by Hezbollah to infiltrate Israeli territory.

I saw the fire, but I didn't yet know there was going to be an explosion. We went inside. Suddenly I lost my hearing because apparently I was too close. I lost my hearing for a few seconds, I knew something was wrong.

And then suddenly the glass just shattered all over the car, the cars around us, the shops, the stores, the buildings. Just glass going down from all over the building.

Literally all over Beirut, people were calling each other from different areas kilometres away and they were experiencing the same thing: broken glass, buildings shaking, a loud explosion.

Actually we were shocked because usually when it happens, just one area will experience those happenings after an explosion, but this time it was all of Beirut, even areas outside of Beirut.

Shock and anxiety

The videos and images not just of the massive cloud of smoke erupting in Beirut but the damage and devastation it's caused kilometres away have triggered a new wave of shock and anxiety in Lebanon, which is already teetering on the brink of a catastrophic economic collapse.

Just hours before the blast, anti-government protesters had been scuffling with the security forces outside the ministry of energy, demanding yet again accountability from the country's leaders.

There have been grave warnings of hunger in the streets or a reigniting of sectarian conflict if the economy worsens.

And the blast will remind many of the bomb that killed Rafik Hariri. The Lebanese will be hoping that this latest blast will remain a human tragedy - an accident - and not a premeditated

(ETH) – One of the world’s major credit-rating companies just fired a warning shot regarding the U.S.’s worsening public finances on Friday according to MSN as Fitch Ratings revised its outlook on the country’s credit score to negative from stable, citing a “deterioration in the U.S. public finances and the absence of a credible fiscal consolidation plan.”
