Topic: +DEV+  Omnipresence

Omnipresence

“Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there.” Psalm 139:7-8

Scripture Focus: 1 Kings 8:12-27

Another attribute of God’s that we do not share is omnipresence. I’ve known parents of big families who’ve wished for this one! Similar to eternity, omnipresence does not just mean that God is everywhere, but that space (like time) is a part of creation, and therefore He not only created it but also transcends it. “The heavens, even the highest heaven, cannot contain you. How much less this temple I have built!” (1 Kings 8:27)

If we haven’t received the free forgiveness of Jesus, omnipresence is bad news for us. Then we are like outlaws on the run, twisting and turning in our sleep, knowing the law will catch up with us eventually.

However, in Jesus, omnipresence is good news because it means we cannot escape His loving presence. God cannot be contained, but He has chosen to condescend and dwell with His people in His saving and redeeming ways. He’s chosen a place to dwell because we need a place to dwell. God is everywhere and yet is with His people.

Insight:  “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you” (Hebrews 13:5).

Topic: +DEV+  Eternity: Outside of Time

Eternity: Outside of Time

“Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory for ever and ever. Amen.” 1 Timothy 1:17

Scripture Focus: Psalm 90:1-17

When some think of eternity and God, they think of a very old man in the clouds. Psalm 90 teaches us that God’s eternity could not be further from such a false image. He is “from everlasting to everlasting” (vs. 2), not simply someone who is a lot older than we are. And it’s not just that God’s eternity extends through all of time. We must also understand that He exists outside of and over time as the creator of time itself.

This prayer of Psalm 90 helps us consider God’s eternity and encourages us “to number our days aright, that we may gain a heart of wisdom” (vs. 12). At the unfathomable wonder of God’s eternity, we are reminded not just of how small we are, but also of how brief our lives are.

Without a knowledge of God’s eternity and our promised eternity in heaven with Him as well, we might feel despair over life’s shortness. The gospel changes our thinking. Now we can expectantly pray,

Insight: “Satisfy us in the morning with your unfailing love, that we may sing for joy and be glad all our days” (vs. 14).

If you have prayer requests for anything please email us and we will pray for them.

Impassibility, Pt. 2

“O God, do not keep silent; be not quiet, O God, be not still. See how your enemies are astir, how your foes rear their heads.” Psalm 83:1-2

Scripture Focus: John 11:1-44

It’s hard for our finite minds to grasp the two sides of the coin about God’s impassibility. On the one hand we know that God is not governed by emotions as we often are; He doesn’t react to the world’s events or experience moods. But at the same time, we know our good and just Creator feels compassion for His people, has anger toward sin, and is familiar with suffering.

John 11 tells of Jesus’ deep sorrow and compassion felt at the death of His friend Lazarus. He sees the anguish of Lazarus’ sisters as He comes to the tomb (vs. 33-38). This account holds comfort for us: we know that Jesus really does mourn with us in our pain, sin, and heartache.

Additionally, because of God’s impassibility, suffering cannot overwhelm Him. When He entered into Mary and Martha’s grief, that was not the last word. He overcame it by raising Lazarus from the dead. Days after this event, He would take all of our sin and suffering at the cross, conquering it forever (vs. 25-26). He’ll use our suffering now for our ultimate good (Romans 8:28).

Insight: “O God, do not keep silent; be not quiet, O God, be not still” (Psalms 83:1)

Today’s Reading: Lamentations 3; Hebrews 10:19-39

Today’s Thoughts: Staying Spiritual During the Holidays

“And you will have joy and gladness and many will rejoice at His birth.” - Luke 1:14

If the holidays are about our faith, family and food feasts, then why do we struggle the most with staying spiritual during these times? Shouldn’t these times bring us peace on earth and joy to the world? But the reality for many of us is that we become emotionally stressed out, financially maxed out and physically burned out trying to keep up and keep it all together. Day after day, we become burned out and stressed out and now, our faith becomes affected as we start questioning God, “Are You hearing me?” and “Why won’t You help me?” Like Eve in the garden, we question God’s goodness and His basic command. Eve exchanged the peace of God for a piece of fruit but we exchange His presence for presents.  The serpent tempted Eve to compromise and we know that Jesus called him a murderer from the beginning. He is still up to the same old tricks. We are allowing the enemy to have too much influence at times. He kills our dreams, steals our peace and destroys our hope for the future. Jesus came to earth to reverse the process of death and yet our undisciplined lifestyle of choosing not to obey can lead to negative consequences in our lives.

To stay spiritually minded during the holidays, we need to keep our eyes focused on the Lord and include Him in our thoughts. Instead of talking to ourselves, we need to start talking to Him and then give Him the time to talk back. The enemy will use every scheme he can against us to distract us from maintaining a walk with the Lord. It has been said, “If the devil cannot make you bad, he will make you busy.” To combat the temptations to over commit in your time and finances, we must stay in the Word of God to renew our minds and to surrender to His will over our natural-born desires. Through the Holy Spirit, we can overcome and live a life pleasing to God that brings peace in the midst of chaos.

Joy to the world begins with each of us individually. Joy cannot come without the conscious awareness of the Lord’s promised presence wherever we go and whatever we do. By allowing our thoughts to think about God in the daily routines of life, we allow the Lord to have the ability to move through our actions. Only then can we truly maintain the Spirit of Christmas and sing the song, “Let there be peace on earth and let it begin with me.”

Our mission is to evangelize the lost and awaken the saved to live empowered lives by the Work of God and His Holy Spirit. Daily Disciples Ministries makes a difference for the kingdom of God by teaching and training believers how to be in God's Word, how to pray and how to walk with Jesus every day, as His daily disciple.

Impassibility, Pt. 1

“Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?” 1 Corinthians 15:55

Scripture Focus: Hebrews 2:14-18

Sometimes I’m overwhelmed by fears of death. A bit of a hypochondriac, I often

call my best friend, a medical school student, to seek his advice for my mostly-imagined symptoms. Fear of death, as Hebrews says, leads to slavery (2:15). But praise God we know and serve the One characterized by impassibility—not experiencing pain or pleasure or knee-jerk reactions to what goes on in the world.

When we say that God is impassible, it doesn’t mean He’s indifferent or doesn’t care about our circumstances. Rather, it means He cannot “become overwhelmed and overcome by the world’s opposition” (Michael Horton, 2011). You and I may feel overwhelmed, but He never is!

The most heinous suffering, Jesus’ crucifixion, was used to conquer death and redeem the world (2:14). Impassibility means that the God-man took on our sin and pain, and destroyed it. Entering into it willingly, He empathizes with our weakness (Hebrews 4:15), apart from mood swings, worry, or uncontrolled responses. He’s involved with us because He cares about us.

Insight: God cannot become overwhelmed and overcome by the world’s oppressions.

Immutability, Pt. 2

“Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.” Hebrews 13:8

Scripture Focus: 1 Samuel 15:1-3; 8-11; 26-29

“If you don’t like something, change it.” You’ve probably heard that before. In fact, much of life involves changing— through the phases of our kids’ lives, through career adjustments, through transformations that come as we grow older. God’s unchangeableness— His immutability—amazes us more and more as we change constantly.

In 1 Samuel, David is anointed as the new king over Israel (16:13). This passage provides a helpful example of how to understand immutability as it comes up in Scripture. God is said to be grieved that He had anointed Saul (15:35). Did God regret what He had done? What about His will not changing? We remember that God “is not a man, that he should change his mind” (15:29). The change is not in God’s purpose to have a faithful king over Israel or even His own purposes with Saul. It is a change in His revealed plan to have Saul as king.

To understand the distinction between God’s unchangeable will and the changing circumstances of life, know that He is always working out His unchangeable purposes.

Insight: God is always working out His unchangeable purposes.

Immutability, Pt. 1

“I the LORD do not change. So you, O descendants of Jacob, are not destroyed.” Malachi 3:6

Scripture Focus: Deuteronomy 32:4-10; 15-20; 28-36

I grew up at the foot of the Dragoon Mountains in Cochise County, Arizona. While this range is by no means the tallest, it does have a unique rocky formation that is particularly beautiful. Such places give us a sense of awe, of beauty, of might, of our own smallness and finitude. We see that our life is a mist (James 4:14).

But God is unchangeable. This immutability means His very being, knowledge, will, and decrees are fixed from all eternity. God cannot change because He is absolute perfection. He “is not a man, that he should lie, nor a son of man, that he should change his mind” (Numbers 23:19).

This is one of the reasons the Lord is called a Rock (see Deuteronomy 32). While His people Israel waver in infidelity, “He is the Rock, his works are perfect, and all his ways are just” (vs. 4). Because the Lord doesn’t change, even when He disciplines His people, He does so with their restoration in sight.

Insight: “The LORD will judge his people and have compassion on his servants when he sees their strength is gone” (vs. 36).

Aseity: Self-Existing, Pt. 2

“‘I tell you the truth,’ Jesus answered, ‘before Abraham was born, I am!’” John 8:58
Scripture Focus: Exodus 3:13-15

Names are significant. When a couple is expecting the birth of their baby (as my wife and I are), they consider various potential names. They may place more or less weight on the name’s meaning, but even those who give little regard to the meaning of a particular name will say things like, “Not Chris, I knew a Chris once, and didn’t like him!”

If aseity—the fact that God only creates and is not created—teaches us that God doesn’t need anything from the world or from us, His name nevertheless teaches us that this same independent God has become intimately involved in our lives. And His name is important.

“I AM WHO I AM” is the name God gives Himself in the midst of recalling His faithfulness to Israel’s fathers. It communicates to Israel and to us that our unfaithfulness will not stop the Lord from being faithful to us. This is not rooted in some random decision on God’s part, but in His independence from us—in His character, not in ours.

Insight: “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved” (Romans 10:13).

Aseity: Self-Existing, Pt. 1

“For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son to have life in himself.” John 5:26

Scripture Focus: Acts 17:22-28

You’ve probably heard the phrase “self-made man” or “self-made woman.” It’s generally used to describe one who comes from humble beginnings to find success (especially financial). The idea of being “self.made” is quite popular today. The problem, according to the Bible, is that being a “self-made person” really is not true.

It’s because of what aseity is. It’s another of God’s incommunicable attributes (attributes which we humans do not have), and it says He exists completely of His own, because He is the only One not created. What God is and does is independent of His creatures and creation. We are not self-made, and in reality, God is not either.

Also, we’re dependent on Him for everything. We need to be reminded that apart from Christ, we “have no good thing” (Psalm 16:2). Rather than being “self-made,” which our idol-making hearts are prone to believe, we “live and move and have our being” (Acts 17:28) in Him alone. This is a comfort to us, because while God does not need us, still He loves us and calls us His own.

Insight: God does not need us, we need Him. But He loves us and called us His own.

God’s Simplicity, Pt. 2
“Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.” James 1:17

Scripture Focus: Hebrews 6:13-20

Our promises are unreliable. We say, “I’ll see you at 11:00” or “I’ll drop the kids off tomorrow,” and then we forget, show up late, or cancel. Our word isn’t very good because we’re not very good. No wonder so many of us struggle just to keep appointments, let alone keep the high standard of faithfulness we’re called to in our marriages, friendships, parenting, and work relationships. When we look closely at ourselves, we find the problem is our self-conflicted nature, our sinful hearts.

The good news of God’s simplicity is that since there is no sin in Him and since His attributes are never conflicted, His promises to be gracious to us are certain (as today’s Hebrews 6 reading tells us). In Jesus, God has gone “all in” to save you. There is no part of Him that second guesses the love He has for you.

This is why He has not only given a firm promise in the gospel to forgive us and grant us eternal life, but He also has sworn “by himself ” (vs. 13) to show us the absolute certainty of the promise. It’s that simple!

Insight: Standing on the promises of God our King…

God’s Simplicity, Pt. 1

“God is love.” 1 John 4:8

Scripture Focus: Romans 3:21-26

Simplicity is a familiar notion with people in our world today. We read articles and join groups about keeping life simple. We like the thought of simplicity in our homes and schedules. But the simplicity of God? That can be a bit more confusing.

Think of it like this: “On account of its absolute perfection, every attribute of God is identical with his essence” (Herman Bavinck, 2004). Therefore, God not only loves, but also He is love. Not only does He show justice; God is justice. Our righteous God is righteousness. While these attributes may be distinct, God is perfectly all of them.

Paul tells us that in the cross, God has proven His attributes are never in conflict. Rather, He is simultaneously gracious towards sinners and righteous in judging His Son on their behalf. He is at the same time “just and the one who justifies those who have faith in Jesus” (v. 26). His simplicity teaches us that He “is love” (1 John 4:8) as well as “the truth” (John 14:6). That is the simplicity of God… and simply wonderful for you and me.

Insight: God Loves us and gave His Son for us.

Unity: Oneness of Being
“Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one.” Deuteronomy 6:4

Scripture Focus: Deuteronomy 4:32-40

When two people have been married for a long time, not only are they able to describe easily the attributes of the other spouse, but also they begin to share some of those attributes. You might say they grow on each other. This Anchor month will look closely at the attributes of God, some of which we Christians also have and can grow in, and others of which belong to God alone.

We begin by considering the attribute of God’s unity. That is, God is one being. In Deuteronomy, Moses reminds Israel of God’s uniqueness and power, calling them to follow the one true God rather than the many false gods they were tempted to trust and love. Such gods have never performed the great deeds the Lord has.

Moses recounts that while the false gods never had the ability to speak to or deliver a beloved group of people, the Lord did so through many great acts, “by a mighty hand and an outstretched arm” (vs. 34). He did these “so that you might know that the LORD is God; besides him there is no other” (vs. 35). The one true God knows you!

Insight: Jesus loves me this I know… for the Bible tells me so…

Rest

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, …and you will find rest for your souls.” Matthew 11:28-29

Scripture Focus: Isaiah 40:28-31

Do you feel weary? There are times when mental, physical, and spiritual exhaustion overwhelm us. We just need a break. Did you know that you can find true rest for your soul through the words of the Bible? God tells us there about a place of rest—a place we can know in part now and will know fully one day.

From the beginning of creation, God has been showing us how to rest in Him. God even instituted the Sabbath, a day of rest. Many believers observe Sunday as the day of rest, a day set apart to enjoy God and His faithfulness. Reserving the first day of the week for the Lord gives us the strength and wisdom we need for what lies ahead. Our strength is renewed when we rest in Christ.

Often the pressures of life shut out adequate sleep, rest, and meditation on the goodness and faithfulness of God. Do you make time to read the Bible? Each day, draw near to your Savior. Take time each week to rest and worship. Stop running; come to the One who is gentle and humble of heart and will give you rest.

Insight: Come to Jesus and find your rest in Him, hear what He wants you to do and then go and do those things. (J.D. Greear)

God Is Love, Pt. 2

“Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends.” John 15:13

Scripture Focus: Scripture Focus: 1

“I love you” is a powerful phrase. It binds people together in relationships. Parents melt when they hear it from their young children for the first time. Lovers establish new intimacy. Long-time friends experience deeper connections. “I love you” is powerful not only because it is what we at our most basic level long to hear, but because it spurs on love when mixed with corresponding actions.

Our text powerfully connects God’s love to His acts of creation and redemption. This helpfully shows us that love is not just an abstract force, but also a deep commitment that seeks out and embraces its beloved. God’s love is also powerful because it is sure and certain for anyone who rests in Jesus. Because God’s love is connected with acts in history for the redemption of His people, it is a concrete power that rescues us from sin and ruin. Indeed, He “remembered us in our low estate,” and we can be sure “His love endures forever” (Psalm 136:23).

If God loves you even in your low estate, He therefore loves you always

Insight: Greater love has no man than this, that he lay down his life for his friends (John 15:13)

God Is Love, Pt. 1

"This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins." 1 John 4:10

Scripture Focus: 1 John 4:

Ah, love. It makes us stop and think. It makes us dream. If we live life long enough, love also makes us a little cynical, especially if we've experienced heartbreak and love unreturned. That is likely what strikes us about love. We all long for more of it, yet we are afraid to believe there is a "love that will not let me go" (George Matheson, 1882). Because of God's aseity.

He does not need anything from us in love. This is good news because it means that not only is He love-perfect love!-but also as He loves, He does not do so based on our loveliness or ability to love Him back. Indeed, "God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8). Unfortunately, our cynicism about love often sneaks into our relationship with the Lord. We're a bit suspicious of such promises; we're fragile in faith. Thankfully, in our distrust and weakness, we add nothing to His love.

He loves us unconditionally even when we don't think He possibly could.

Insight: What makes you afraid to fully trust that God loves you unconditionally? What does the cross of Christ have to say to this?

Lost and Found

"But we had to celebrate and be glad, because this brother of yours was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found."   Luke 15:32

Scripture Focus: Luke 15:32

I had broken my favorite 20Oz coffee cup out side while working a wood project. It's funny how such a small thing can feel so important. I searched high and low to replace that cup, sent an email to various stores, and began to search for one myself. I was about to give up on it when my wife saw one at a store saying they had indeed a 20Oz coffee cup. When I went back a few days later, I was thrilled to find one. The first thought that came to mind was, "Once was lost but now is found."

You may have had a similar experience at some time. Do you remember the delight you felt when your wallet or necklace or other material item was returned? Now magnify that joy a million or more times. That describes the elation of the father in Jesus' lost son parable. And it is only a glimmer of God's joy that abounds because He has found you and me!

Regardless of your social status, your title or occupation, or what country you live in, if you are in Christ Jesus, once you were lost and now you are found.

Insight: "Amazing grace! How sweet the sound; That saved a wretch like me!; I once was lost, but now am found; Was blind, but now I see." (John Newton, 1779)

"In God, whose word I praise, in the LORD, whose word I praise-in God I trust; I will not be afraid. What can man do to me?"   Psalm 56:10-11

Scripture Focus: Psalm 56:10-11

The Bible encourages you to "fear not" many, many times. Some have even said a form of "fear not" can be found 365 times in the Bible, giving you a word of encouragement for each day of the year. Your heavenly Father knows that due to your sinful nature and the fallen world you live in, fear is eminent every day. He also knows that fear can strongly motivate or freeze you to the point of not thinking straight. Yet God calls you to trust in Him daily, regardless of the circumstances.

Don't fear Him; He's not out to get you or trying to get even with you. Jesus already paid for every single sin of yours-past, present, and future-on the cross.  To be a follower of Christ in a European country such as Germany is not easy. Many German Christians live in fear because of the consequences they may suffer for their faith. They, too, have received God's word to "fear not." The stakes are high when persecution, failures, or sickness come into play. But these are the moments when trusting in God becomes real and our faith becomes sight.

Anxiety

"He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all-how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things?" Romans 8:32

Scripture Focus: Romans 8:31-39

A wave of anxiety is washing over the lives of Christians today. Feelings of unhappiness, worry about the future, and despair overwhelm us. There could be medical or financial reasons for our anxieties, but most of us would have to admit we suffer from a lack of trust in the Sovereign God. We may decide to trust earthly treasures rather than heavenly ones, or to rely on our limited human power instead of the limitless divine power of Jesus. Or perhaps our anxieties devastate us simply because we think we know more than God.

Anxiety is not new to God. The Bible urges us often to cast our anxiety on Him. If you've ever traveled to foreign Countries, you would see that Christians there fight to stand up against life's anxieties, too. They share many of the same feelings of despair and concern as we do-and then more! They worry about their daily provision, their living conditions, their freedoms.

When it seems like your world is crashing in on you, cast your cares on the One who gave His very life to see you through.

Insight: "Cast your cares on the LORD and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous fall." (Psalm 55:22)

Well Done

"Well done, my good servant! his master replied. Because you have been trustworthy in a very small matter, take charge of ten cities."   Luke 19:17

Scripture Focus: Luke 19

"Well done." Who wouldn't love to hear that? Imagine Jesus saying those words to you when you get to heaven. The money you earned, talents you developed, or responsibilities you had are not the objects of your life. Your faithfulness in utilizing these things to glorify God and then to expand His Kingdom to the nations are of far more importance. Your faithfulness with what you've been given in this life will result in great rewards in the life to come.

There is a famous line from the well-known movie “Gladiator”, where the main character, Maximus, says, "What we do in life echoes in eternity." I've found that while our Christian brothers and sisters in countries over seas are suffering through many challenges due to their faith, this idea takes on more meaning. They tell about Jesus whatever the cost, and surely that will echo into eternity. But even as many of those in other parts of the world consider this, we know the greater truth.

It's not so much what we do in this life, but what Jesus Christ has already done that echoes down into all eternity.

Insight: "Life is not about having things. Life is about knowing God." (John Piper, 2018)

Servanthood

"'I am the Lord's servant,' Mary answered. 'May it be to me as you have said.' Then the angel left her."   Luke 1:38

Scripture Focus: Luke 1:26-38

In the 21st century, talk of being a servant might seem a bit dated. Who would want to submit to a master who might be harsh? However, in the Bible being a servant of the Lord was an honor, whether you were a king or a peasant. The mighty King David and the lowly girl Mary desired alike to be servants of God.

Thus, I was moved by a German pastor and his family who would ride their bicycles around Stuttgart Germany to a house church where he served. Additionally, when he was asked to not only continue pastoring his existing church but also to pick up another one in need of a leader, he answered, "I'm the Lord's servant; therefore, I'm your servant. It will be an honor to share the gospel and continue to expand God's Kingdom."

How does one embrace such sincere servanthood? It comes because the God we serve humbled Himself to walk and eat among outcasts, to wash the feet of His often-doubting friends, and to give Himself up on a cross for us. Being a servant requires submission, but none greater than that which Jesus has already shown.

Insight: "I am not here to survive, but I am here to serve God's purpose." (Corrie Ten Boom, 1974)

Time Well-Spent

"Be very careful, then, how you live-not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil."   Ephesians 5:15-16

Scripture Focus: Ephesians 5

I seem to ask myself on a regular basis, where did the time go? Like me, your days may be filled with meeting deadlines, making decisions, answering emails, responding to texts, following favorite shows and social media accounts, going to church activities, reserving time for family, etc.

Are we spending time with God? Designating time to rest? Are we making the best use of the time we have?  On my last trip to Cuba, I was given a glimpse of what time well-spent is like. Though we had ministry commitments to regard, the days seemed long because we were occupied building relationships, discipling each other, or simply being with loved ones. Due to technological limitations, we resorted to visiting neighbors for a cup of coffee, having conversations in person, playing board games, and seizing divine opportunities to speak about Jesus.

That sort of almost-ideal daily routine may be hard to come by in the States. But we can look hard at our own lives to ensure we are "making the most of every opportunity" to make Jesus' name known daily.

Insight: "My soul is consumed with longing for your laws at all times." (Psalm 119:20)

Meet Jesus

"He asked them, Who do the crowds say that I am? They replied, Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, one of the prophets, Who do you say I am?' Peter answered, 'The Christ of God."   Luke 9:18-20

Scripture Focus: Luke 9: 7-22

For 20+ years Restoration Ministry has been intent on leading people to encounter Jesus and know Him as Lord. All aspects of the ministry have united to present Christ as the fulfillment of Old Testament promises and as the one and only true King. There seems to never be a shortage of the devil's schemes to undermine this, however.

I recall an afternoon back in 1999 when we received an atypical visitor at the Restoration Ministry’s office. My wife and I were serving on the Prayer Teem Ministry team at the time, so I was summoned to meet the young man. I extended my hand to greet him and introduced myself. He responded, "I'm Jesus Christ, the Son of God." I assured him that he was not the real Jesus. I explained why that was so, but at the time he would have none of it.

I thought of the "false messiahs and false prophets" the Gospel books warn of, and my prayer as he left was that he would have an encounter with the one and only Jesus. Restoration Ministry will always seek to be true to the Word of God, pointing you to Jesus, who truly is, "the Christ of God."

Insight: Luke 9:20  And He said to them, "But who do you say that I am?" Peter replied, "The Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed) of God!"

Language of Life

"Do not be misled: Bad company corrupts good character." "No one who practices deceit will dwell in my house; no one who speaks falsely will stand in my presence."   1 Corinthians 15:33, Psalm 101:7

Scripture Focus: 1 Corinthians 15:1-35

Generally, I was not surprised when I heard soldiers I worked with using foul language. It often started with name-calling. When it occurred, it was discouraged- not only by enlisted, but also by other NCO’s and Officers. They cared that their environment was orderly and safe. Angry, racist language would jeopardize safety, hurting many and often leading to violence.

Several fights I knew of began with words but did not end there. We are created in God's image. Using harsh words that harm others diminishes us and denigrates the name of Jesus. The better way is to use "gentle answers" that do not "stir up anger" (Proverbs 15:1). We can avoid those who are disrespectful lest we ourselves fall prey to incivility or aggression.

We are reminded of the words of eternal life, that "every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord" (Philippians 2:11). Surround yourself with those who want to honor Jesus. And rather than calling anyone else a hurtful name, remember that your Savior, in gentle tones and with much compassion, has called you by name.

Insight: Jesus affirms and loves us. He asks us to love each other as we love ourselves and to love Him with our whole being.
