Topic: +DEV+  Not By Power But By My Spirit
Not By Power But By My Spirit

"And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit, who lives in you."   Romans 8:11

Scripture Focus: Romans 8

The prophet Zechariah's message to the returning exiles involved rebuilding the temple. But unlike Haggai, Zechariah did not speak to a stubborn, selfish people. His audience, instead, was afraid, confused, and not feeling up to the task. Their temple was so much smaller than Solomon's-which Nebuchadnezzar had destroyed. They felt they lacked the strength to complete even a small temple. By reminding them of the Spirit's power, Zechariah assured them that the job would get done.

Behind their objection, though, was a bigger problem. It's what's behind all of our problems: sin. Even a nicely rebuilt, fully-functional temple would not address their real need. They would never obey perfectly. Zechariah had a bigger solution for them. He prophesied words of hope about a coming Branch, a perfect High Priest who would remove the sins of the people in a single day (Zech 3:9).

We know His name. It's Jesus, who saved all of His people one day on the cross. His salvation is ours, not by our might, but by faith and by His Spirit.

Insight: "Like living stones, [you] are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God." (1 Peter 2:5)

It is our hopes and prayers that these devotions will bring people to Jesus as Savior and have a deeper meaningful relationship with the Lord.

Topic: +DEV+  The Spirit with Us

"For you did not receive a spirit that makes you a slave again to fear; but you received the Spirit of sonship. And by him we cry, Abba, Father."   Romans 8:15

Scripture Focus: Romans 8

When the prophet Haggai came on the scene, a later generation of the first Israelite exiles was brought back home. They were a tiny band of survivors, still subject to foreign kings and generally hated by the people of the land. They had every reason to be anxious about how things would go. Still, Haggai's message to them (and to us today!) is one of hope, because the Spirit of the Lord is with them. Referring back to the exodus from Egypt, Haggai reminds the people that God's promises are everlasting.
When you're facing uncertainty, take yourself back to the memories of how God has kept you safe, has guided you, and has been faithful to His promises. God told His people to rebuild the temple. They were reluctant because doing so would mark them as "different." But that is exactly why they must do it! They should be proud, not ashamed, of a God who has loved them so faithfully.

You and I also need not fear how the world receives us. The Spirit of the Lord is not only in our midst; He is in our hearts, mighty to save.

Insight: "The Spirit will abide with the true church forevermore. This is our hope for the present struggle. The Spirit of God remains with us." (Charles H. Spurgeon, 1918)

It is our hopes and prayers that these devotions will bring people to Jesus as Savior and have a deeper meaningful relationship with the Lord.

Lives in All Believers

"You also were included in Christ when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation. Having believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit."   Ephesians 1:13-14

Scripture Focus: Ephesians 1

The prophet Joel foretold a terrible day of God's judgment on Israel and called his countrymen to repent. The Lord took pity and spared them. More than merely sparing them, He restored what they'd already lost. Additionally, He promised security from enemies and plentiful harvests. Then the Lord did even more: He promised to pour out His Holy Spirit.

He had given His Spirit before (to Moses, David, Joel, and the other prophets), but in this instance the Lord promised to pour out His Spirit on all of His people-men and women, young and old, rich and poor. This promise was fulfilled in the New Testament at Pentecost, when the Holy Spirit was poured out upon the disciples. The people of all nations heard God being praised. Since it is a work of the Holy Spirit that our hearts are renewed and we can confess Christ, the Spirit is indeed evident in all who believe.

How might it change our daily lives to know the Holy Spirit lives in us? We can love and hope and obey in ways that would be impossible in our own strength.

Insight: "The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all." (2 Corinthians 13:14)

It is our hopes and prayers that these devotions will bring people to Jesus as Savior and have a deeper meaningful relationship with the Lord.

To Speak Hard Truths
"Pray also for me, that whenever I open my mouth, words may be given me so that I will fearlessly make known the mystery of the gospel. ,Pray that I may declare it fearlessly, as I should."   Ephesians 6:19-20
Scripture Focus: Ephesians 6

Have you ever been in a position where it was necessary to correct or criticize an authority figure? You may have refused to do so, being aware of your place. Micah was to call out the rulers of his day who took bribes and made cruel demands of the people. The other prophets (who should have been Micah's allies) wouldn't dare stand up. They ignored God in their prophecies and preached for their own advantage, praising whoever fed them and cursing whoever didn't.
It's one thing to criticize an equal, but it's a big deal to speak out against someone who can do us harm. But Micah's charge came from an even greater authority than an earthly king. He had the most powerful ally in the universe-the Spirit of the Lord! He obeyed fearlessly because God was with him and in him. We can be bold, too, in speaking out against sin and injustice. We begin with respect because our hearers may not even know they are sinning.
For those who won't hear the truth, God's Word must still be our message, and His Spirit is our defense.

Insight: "Be merciful to those who doubt; snatch others from the fire and save them; to others show mercy, mixed with fear." (Jude 22-23)

It is our hopes and prayers that these devotions will bring people to Jesus as Savior and have a deeper meaningful relationship with the Lord.

Evident to Unbelievers

"Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day he visits us.” 1 Peter 2:12

Scripture Focus: 1 Peter 2

King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon had a nightmare, and his wise men couldn't explain it to him. But Daniel had interpreted a dream for him earlier, when no one else was able. Daniel insisted that he did not possess special powers to do this. Rather, it was the Lord who showed him the dream and its meaning (Daniel 2:27-28). From then on, Nebuchadnezzar recognized that "the spirit of the holy gods" was in Daniel.

Daniel was among a group of young Israelite men (some of the finest in intellect, physical ability, and appearance) whom Nebuchadnezzar had taken from Jerusalem in battle. Though a captive and an exile, Daniel became more than a trophy for the king. In time, he was a valued advisor to several generations of rulers. It was obvious even to these foreign kings that the Spirit of God was in Daniel. For his part, Daniel was humble and faithful, and gave his God the glory.

When the Holy Spirit is at work in us-causing us to love truth, goodness, justice, and mercy-the world will see it. And all the glory goes to God!

Insight: "Let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven." (Matthew 5:16)

It is our hopes and prayers that these devotions will bring people to Jesus as Savior and have a deeper meaningful relationship with the Lord.

He Guides Us in Worship

"True worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in spirit and in truth."   John 4:23-24

Scripture Focus: John 4

Ezekiel saw fantastic visions during his time as a prophet. We're not likely to ever see what he saw. But we can experience what he experienced-the Spirit of God leading him into worship. The Spirit leads us in two ways. He inspires us to worship in the first place. We may be consumed with our daily lives, thinking about anything but God and His grace, when suddenly something moves us to worship. It may be the sight of a stunning, huge moon; the arrival of a newborn baby; the gratitude you feel to an employer; a line of a hymn sung out heartily at church.

Something stirs in you to worship the God who's given all these things and more. Secondly, the Spirit leads us in proper worship. The Lord not only has preferences, but requirements about how we are to approach Him. In His holiness, He is entitled. The Spirit showed Ezekiel many things the people were doing that were unacceptable.

When we seek Him sincerely, prayerfully, He will show us, through the Word and wisdom, worship that is pleasing and honorable to Him.

Insight: "It is the flame of my life to worship You. , Give me power by Thy Spirit to help me worship now." (prayer from The Valley of Vision, 1975)

It is our hopes and prayers that these devotions will bring people to Jesus as Savior and have a deeper meaningful relationship with the Lord.

Spiritual Conversion
"Because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions-it is by grace you have been saved."   Ephesians 2:4-5

Scripture Focus: Ephesians 2

From the beginning of my studies of the Spirit of the Lord in prophecy, Is aw how we live in opposition to God's Spirit. With our sinful, rebellious nature, our hearts are hard. In fact, the "heart of stone" that Ezekiel speaks about in chapter 36 is not merely stubborn; it is dead, lifeless. But the Lord does what is necessary to save His beloved children. So He gives us new hearts.

A pacemaker, a new valve, or a stent won't do the trick. Our old hearts are too far gone. Even better than a heart transplant, the Lord puts His Spirit in us. Then we find we have new desires. We want to do God's will, obey His rules, abide in Him. Logical arguments or impassioned sermons might not persuade us. It's when the Holy Spirit lives and moves in us that we change in our wills and desires.

It's important that we get the order right. We are incapable of obeying ourselves into a loving relationship with the Lord. But when He lovingly works on our hearts, we change from the inside out. Our new nature is aligned with His.

Insight: Jesus says, You must be born again!

It is our hopes and prayers that these devotions will bring people to Jesus as Savior and have a deeper meaningful relationship with the Lord.

Topic: +DEV+  The Persecuted Church
The Persecuted Church
"Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven."   Matthew 5:11-12

Scripture Focus: Matthew 5

The Spirit brought Ezekiel to the exiles in Chaldea and gave him a mission. He was to share with them the word that God had given for His people, the children of Israel. This was the church of Ezekiel's day. The Spirit had Ezekiel bring a message because God never forgets the church, especially when it is enduring persecution. Christ Himself was persecuted during His earthly ministry.

The apostles suffered at the hands of both Jews and Gentiles. In the West where we are usually comfortable and secure, it can be hard to imagine real persecution. But throughout history and around the world the church has experienced persecution more often than not. Through suffering, Christ identifies with those who suffer with Him. He asked the Father to send the Spirit for the express purpose of comforting the church.

None of us ever goes looking for suffering. But we do know the Lord comes looking after us in the midst of our trials. Remember to pray for the persecuted church around the world as she longs for her reward in heaven.

Insight: Lord, bless and protect Your sons and daughters who suffer mightily. Keep them faithful, and turn the hearts of their persecutors for Your glory. Amen

It is our hopes and prayers that these devotions will bring people to Jesus as Savior and have a deeper meaningful relationship with the Lord.

The Spirit Knows Our Thoughts

"Knowing their thoughts, Jesus said, Why do you entertain evil thoughts in your hearts?"  Matthew 9:4 #

Scripture Focus: Matthew 9

What could be more private than our own thoughts? As soon as we put a pen to paper or type words on a screen, we know that what we've written can be discovered. A secret, once confessed even to our closest friend, can be betrayed. But if we keep to ourselves, never divulging our deepest confidences and thoughts to anyone, all will be safe, right?

God knows all. Nothing can be hidden from Him. He knew exactly what Adam and Eve had done in the garden. The Spirit told Ezekiel what was on the mind of the princes of Israel. Jesus knew the thoughts of the Pharisees. The Lord knows our thoughts, too. What makes all the difference is the fact that He loves us.

We fear those who would expose us, who would use our thoughts against us. Our heavenly Father would do no such thing. He won't humiliate us, manipulate us, or crush us. But He will expose our sin that we might be delivered from it by the blood of Christ who bore our shame. In Him our greatest secret hurts can be healed, and our secret longings can be fulfilled.

Insight: Lord, You already know me. Uncover my own secrets that I might be rid of sin and Your blessings might be fulfilled. Amen

It is our hopes and prayers that these devotions will bring people to Jesus as Savior and have a deeper meaningful relationship with the Lord.

Seeing as God Sees

"The man without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him, and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually discerned."   1 Corinthians 2:14

Scripture Focus: 1 Corinthians 2

We may never have the fantastic visions Ezekiel had. For that we can be grateful, as much of it was unpleasant. He saw the glory of God, but he was also shown the sin and wickedness of his own people. He even saw terrible corruption in the temple. Do we see sin in the church today? Of course we do. And we must be careful in our judgment of it since we are also sinners with our own faults and biases.

We may be tempted to hold others to a higher standard than that to which we hold ourselves. Struggling saints need the same grace that you and I need. While we should not turn a blind eye to sin, especially in the household of God, we have to remember our limited vision-we simply cannot see things from God's perspective. We can be sure, though, that the Spirit is always seeing from God's perspective. As the Holy Spirit guides us in understanding God's Word, we have a standard by which to evaluate what we encounter.
We also can be sure that no eye has seen the things God has prepared for us with Him in heaven one day.

Insight: "The Scriptures are to be interpreted under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, which guidance is to be humbly and earnestly sought." (Charles Hodge, 1871)

It is our hopes and prayers that these devotions will bring people to Jesus as Savior and have a deeper meaningful relationship with the Lord.

This letter is framed by the fact that I’m needing to write it beforehand in midsummer.  So I’m writing it before the autumn.  I believe this September and autumn will be a most critical time.  I believe America is in great trouble and now standing at a precipice - which can lead to repentance, departure, the sealing of judgment, and calamity.  And it can include both shakings and calamities that lead many to return to God.  But no matter what happens or not in the spiritual realm or the physical realm - some things will be true and most importantly in the autumn.

The world changes - but God remains the same.  Everything in this world is temporary.  Everything changes.  People come and go, live and die.  Parties come to power and are driven from power.  Kingdoms rise and fall.  Everything in our lives change.  This world is a changing place.  But one thing does not - God.  God never changes.  Thus He is called THE ROCK.  Messiah is the same yesterday, today, and forever.  No matter what may come, He will be the same when it comes, just as important, just as central, just as alive,  just as real as He was when He walked the earth.

The Lord’s purposes will not be stopped - we know this world if filled with evil and that which opposes the will of God.  And we know that it may often look as if the people and purposes of God are on the weak side of history.  But that’s only how it looks.  David looked hopeless in the face of Goliath.  Paul was in prison, chained for his faith.  Messiah looked defeated on the cross.  Yet, David slew Goliath, Paul touched millions of lives from prison chains, and Messiah on the cross overcame the world.  God’s purposes will move forward and, in the end, prevail at all times, through all things, and will overcome the world.

God’s Word will be upheld - It has been thousands of years since the Word of God was first given.  And yet, it has outlasted every power and kingdom and age that has come after it.  It is a fresh and vital and alive now as it was when it was first given.  So in the days to come, the Word of God will be upheld, and will be in future days just as powerful as it was when God first spoke it, just as true, just as pivotal, and just as life-changing.

God will work all things for good for those who love Him - God never promises that all things will be pleasant, easy, or even good, in and of themselves.  The great giants of the Bible went through much that few would call ‘good’.  But what God does promise is better.  He will work all things, not some and not even most, for the good of those who love Him.  So no matter what happens in the world, in the remainder of the year, or in the days beyond, His promise will prove true.  God will, for real, work all things in the world and in your life for the good of you who love Him.

For we don’t have to be concerned with all things.  We only have to focus on Him who is Lord of all.  He is Lord of all things past.  He is Lord of all things present.  And He is Lord of all things to come.  And that is good enough.  It is more than good enough

Let us look to Him in trust, in faith, and in full devotion, who is Lord of all, every part of life.  And may god greatly bless you and keep you.

~Jonathan Cohn~

It is our hopes and prayers that these devotions will bring people to Jesus as Savior and have a deeper meaningful relationship with the Lord.

Holy Spirit and Blessings

“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” Romans 15:13

Scripture Focus: Isaiah 32:15-18

When we consider the Holy Spirit being poured out on God’s people (especially in the context of the prophets) we might imagine empowerment for some great spiritual task like telling a wicked king, “Thus saith the Lord,” or preaching to an angry mob, or writing to a far-away church a letter that eventually becomes part of the Bible.

In today’s passage, though, we see that the effects of the Holy Spirit go beyond the spiritually dramatic. Even daily life gets better when lived in the light of God’s glory. There are images of natural bounty where formerly fruitless fields produce in abundance. Peace and righteousness replace anxiety and evil, and the people who live there know quietness, confidence, and security. Don’t these passages make you sigh and yearn for it to be so?

It can be so. Jesus promised to send the Comforter. Ever since Peter preached at Pentecost, the Spirit dwells in all believers. The Holy Spirit is ours, not just for great spiritual things, but for provision and consolation in all of life.

Insight: May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in Him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. (Romans 15:13)

It is our hopes and prayers that these devotions will bring people to Jesus as Savior and have a deeper meaningful relationship with the Lord.

Topic: +DEV+  Why We Oppose God’s Spirit

Why We Oppose God’s Spirit

“The mind of sinful man is death, but the mind controlled by the Spirit is life and peace; the sinful mind is hostile to God. It does not submit to God’s law, nor can it do so.” Romans 8:6-7

Scripture Focus: Isaiah 29:22-30:3

When we think of the Old Testament prophets of the Bible, we often think of odd characters who made scary threats and even scarier predictions about the future. But everything the prophets said is from God’s Spirit and is recorded in Scripture for our good even today.

The strongest, sternest things they might say are to protect us from the grave harm that comes when we think we can go our own way without God. Ever since Adam first disobeyed God, humanity has followed him in rebelling against our Creator. We want to be in charge. In our confused, twisted thinking, we believe somehow that we are up to the task. How could we possibly be big enough, smart enough, or strong enough to handle a whole world of sin?

But God in Jesus saves us from sin and points us in a new direction. By His Holy Spirit, God gives us the desire and ability to understand and follow His plan rather than our own. God shows us that plan in His Word. When we follow His Spirit, even the odd and scary prophets become wise and trusted friends.

Insight: The mind controlled by the Spirit of God is life & peace. (Romans 8:7)

It is our hopes and prayers that these devotions will bring people to Jesus as Savior and have a deeper meaningful relationship with the Lord.

God’s Glory, Pt. 2
“After this I heard what sounded like the roar of a great multitude in heaven shouting: ‘Hallelujah! Salvation and glory and power belong to our God.’” Revelation 19:1

Scripture Focus: 2 Corinthians 12:1-10

God is glorious! What a fitting way to end a month of meditations on His attributes. “May the peoples praise you, O God; may all the peoples praise you” (Psalm 67:5). This is the conclusion we come to in light of who God is.

Yet for us in everyday life, living by faith and resting in who God is can be very difficult. If we are in the midst of great heartache and sorrow, it is hard to believe that God is good, righteous, immutable, or impassible—if on the rare occasion those words even come to mind at all.

The good news for you today in the midst of agony, joy, or something in between is that God is unchangeable. He will keep displaying His character and His glory in your life. This may look primarily like the grace, unconditional love, and mercy that get you through another day. But even in the darkest of times, you will know the voice of Jesus saying to you, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness” (2 Corinthians 12:9). For this and all of His attributes, to God be the glory!

Insight: May the peoples praise you, O God; may all the peoples praise you. (Psalm 67:5)

It is our hopes and prayers that these devotions will bring people to Jesus as Savior and have a deeper meaningful relationship with the Lord.

God’s Glory, Pt. 1

“So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.” 1 Corinthians 10:31

Scripture Focus: Psalm 104

I hope that meditating on the various attributes of God has led you to a deeper level of trust. Your Father in heaven is good, and He is on your side. His glory and His ways are beyond us (Isaiah 55:8-9). We only know God and His attributes as He’s revealed Himself in the story of creation and redemption. Our own speculations or theories do not tell us who God is. We would do well to note the ancient believer who wrote Psalm 104. He declares the truth of God’s glory through meditating on His creative work in the world. “How many are your works, O LORD! In wisdom you made them all; the earth is full of your creatures” (vs. 24).

This psalm is a blueprint for how to enjoy God’s glory. Glorying in Him can look like breakfast with a friend, an evening walk, a chorus sung at church, or a movie with the kids. In all of these ways, we enjoy the righteousness, goodness, and self-existence of the One to whom all creatures look (vs. 27).

Insight: Let’s try to train ourselves to enjoy God’s glory in the daily rhythms of life.

It is our hopes and prayers that these devotions will bring people to Jesus as Savior and have a deeper meaningful relationship with the Lord.

Topic: +DEV+  God’s Perfection
God’s Perfection

“Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.” Matthew 5:48

Scripture Focus: Psalm 113:1-9

As we near the end of a month of considering the attributes of God, it is worth pondering how all of these attributes fit together. You might say they are all wrapped up in His perfection. This perfection is not just limited to moral purity. It means there is nothing greater or more exalted than God. If God is God, He will indeed be nothing less than perfect.

The psalmist pronounces, “The LORD is exalted over all the nations, his glory above the heavens” (vs. 4). This leads him to ask rhetorically, “Who is like the LORD our God, the One who sits enthroned on high, who stoops down to look on the heavens and the earth?” (vs. 5-6) Amazingly, this God who is exalted over all the nations “raises the poor from the dust and lifts the needy from the ash heap” (vs. 7).

God’s perfection is particularly made known to us in His coming down and saving us out of our own “ash heap” of neediness. His plan was perfect. We respond in praise: “As for God, his way is perfect… he is a shield for all who take refuge in him” (Psalm 18:30).

Insight: God is a shield for all who take refuge in him” (Psalm 18:30).

It is our hopes and prayers that these devotions will bring people to Jesus as Savior and have a deeper meaningful relationship with the Lord.

God’s Holiness, Pt. 2

“I will not carry out my fierce anger, nor will I turn and devastate Ephraim. For I am God, and not a man—the Holy One among you. I will not come in wrath.” Hosea 11:9

Scripture Focus: Isaiah 6:1-13

We have seen that God is holy in His distinctiveness from His creation. We know that He sets us apart for Himself, and this is not something we take for granted. God is not just holy in His being, but He is ethically holy. That is, He is pure of all sin while we, on the other hand, are filled with sin (Romans 3:10-18).

The first words Isaiah utters upon seeing the Lord are, “‘Woe to me! … I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips, and my eyes have seen the King, the Lord Almighty’” (6:5). He was profoundly aware of his disgrace before the pure, sinless, holy God.

God’s holiness has us in the same place as Isaiah: realizing our ruin because of our sin and brokenness. But He doesn’t leave us there. Just as God’s holiness led to Isaiah’s sin being atoned for (vs. 6), so it is with us. Then Isaiah was set apart for God’s message (vs. 8-13). If that is the pattern, it’s no surprise that Jesus is our holiness (1 Corinthians 1:30) who then brings us into His mission.

Insight: Just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written: “Be holy because I am holy” (1 Peter 1:15,16)

It is our hopes and prayers that these devotions will bring people to Jesus as Savior and have a deeper meaningful relationship with the Lord.

God’s Holiness, Pt. 1

“For this is what the high and lofty One says—he who lives forever, whose name is holy: I live in a high and holy place, but also with him who is contrite and lowly in spirit.” Isaiah 57:15a

Scripture Focus: Exodus 29:35-46

In recent years my mom has picked up a new hobby: making pottery. What started out as a free class offered at a local church has turned into a craft that she is surprisingly good at. She even sells some of her pieces at a local plant nursery. While most of what she has made is fair game for potential buyers, there are a couple pieces we hope she never sells because we want to set them apart, keep them in the family.

Similar to how we’ve held back some of my mom’s pottery to be our own possession, God by His holiness sets His people apart from all the people of the world to be His special, treasured ones. God’s holiness first of all communicates His distinction from His creation, like the potter being distinct from the clay. He is holy and we are not. He is the Creator; we are the creation.

Today’s Isaiah passage, however, shows another part of this holiness. Our high and exalted One has come down to dwell with us and make us His own! He has made us holy and has redeemed us through Jesus (1 Corinthians 1:30).

Insight: It is because of Him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God, That is, our righteousness, holiness and redemption. (1 Corinthians 1:30)

It is our hopes and prayers that these devotions will bring people to Jesus as Savior and have a deeper meaningful relationship with the Lord.

Opened Eyes

"'They have taken my Lord away,' she said, 'and I don't know where they have put him.' At this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not realize that it was Jesus."   John 20:13-14

Scripture Focus: John 20

Most of us like surprises. Yet don't we love to get a hint about the surprise beforehand? You might say we want to minimize the surprise factor, be prepared, know if we're going to like it or not. Especially if the surprise involves being blindfolded, we can't wait to open our eyes.

In the normal events of life, God often "keeps the blindfold on" us. For His own reasons, He prohibits us from seeing the true perspective of a situation. But when He divinely opens our eyes, we're amazed. This was the case with Elisha and his servant who saw the horses and chariots of fire (2 Kings 6:15-23), and it was the case with Jesus walking alongside His two followers on the road to Emmaus (Luke 24:13-32).

While in South Korea, I met “Pop” a evangelical pastor who had  a mission in Seoul He been granted a visa by the government to give him unlimited travels in and out of the country. His eyes were opened to the need to continue evangelizing the peninsula. He saw the glory of God as His light was shed on souls darkened by sin.

Insight: Ask God to open your eyes and surprise you with His glory so you can share with others.

It is our hopes and prayers that these devotions will bring people to Jesus as Savior and have a deeper meaningful relationship with the Lord.

Anxiety

"He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all-how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things?"   Romans 8:32

Scripture Focus: Romans 8

A wave of anxiety is washing over the lives of Christians today. Feelings of unhappiness, worry about the future, and despair overwhelm us. There could be medical or financial or even poltical reasons for our anxieties, but most of us would have to admit we suffer from a lack of trust in the Sovereign God.

We may decide to trust earthly treasures rather than heavenly ones, or to rely on our limited human power instead of the limitless divine power of Jesus. Or perhaps our anxieties devastate us simply because we think we know more than God.  Anxiety is not new to God. The Bible urges us often to cast our anxiety on Him.

If you've ever traveled to foreign Countries, you would see that Christians there fight to stand up against life's anxieties, too. They share many of the same feelings of despair and concern as we do-and then more! They worry about their daily provision, their living conditions, their freedoms.

When it seems like your world is crashing in on you, cast your cares on the One who gave His very life to see you through.

Insight: "Cast your cares on the LORD and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous fall." (Psalm 55:22)

It is our hopes and prayers that these devotions will bring people to Jesus as Savior and have a deeper meaningful relationship with the Lord.

Well Done

"'Well done, my good servant!' his master replied. Because you have been trustworthy in a very small matter, take charge of ten cities."   Luke 19:17

Scripture Focus: Luke 19

"Well done." Who wouldn't love to hear that? Imagine Jesus saying those words to you when you get to heaven. The money you earned, talents you developed, or responsibilities you had are not the objects of your life. Your faithfulness in utilizing these things to glorify God and then to expand His Kingdom to the nations are of far more importance.

Your faithfulness with what you've been given in this life will result in great rewards in the life to come.  There is a famous line from the well-known movie Gladiator, where the main character, Maximus, says, "What we do in life echoes in eternity." I've found that while our Christian brothers and sisters in countries over seas are suffering through many challenges due to their faith, this idea takes on more meaning.

They tell about Jesus whatever the cost, and surely that will echo into eternity. But even as many of those in other parts of the world consider this, we know the greater truth. It's not so much what we do in this life, but what Jesus Christ has already done that echoes down into all eternity.

Insight: "Life is not about having things. Life is about knowing God." (John Piper, 2018)

Topic: +DEV+  Servanthood

Servanthood

"'I am the Lord's servant,' Mary answered. 'May it be to me as you have said.' Then the angel left her."   Luke 1:38

Scripture Focus:  Luke 1

In the 21st century, talk of being a servant might seem a bit dated. Who would want to submit to a master who might be harsh? However, in the Bible being a servant of the Lord was an honor, whether you were a king or a peasant. The mighty King David and the lowly girl Mary desired alike to be servants of God.

Thus, I was moved by a Costa Rican pastor a who would actually run from one house church to another house church where he served. Additionally, when asked he would answer, "I'm the Lord's servant; therefore, I'm your servant. It will be an honor to share the gospel and continue to expand God's Kingdom."

How does one embrace such sincere servanthood? It comes because the God we serve humbled Himself to walk and eat among outcasts, to wash the feet of His often-doubting friends, and to give Himself up on a cross for us. Being a servant requires submission, but none greater than that which Jesus has already shown.

Insight: "I am not here to survive, but I am here to serve God's purpose." (Corrie Ten Boom, 1974)

It is our hopes and prayers that these devotions will bring people to Jesus as Savior and have a deeper meaningful relationship with the Lord.

Topic: +DEV+  Time Well-Spent

Time Well-Spent

"Be very careful, then, how you live-not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil."   Ephesians 5:15-16
Scripture Focus: Ephesians 5
I seem to ask myself on a regular basis, where did the time go? Like me, your days may be filled with meeting deadlines, making decisions, answering emails, responding to texts, following favorite shows and social media accounts, going to church activities, reserving time for family, etc. Are we spending time with God? Designating time to rest? Are we making the best use of the time we have?

On my trip to South Korea, I was given a glimpse of what time well-spent is like. Though I had military commitments to regard, the days seemed long because we were occupied building relationships, discipling each other, or simply being with loved ones.

Due to technological limitations, we resorted to visiting soldiers for a cup of coffee, having conversations in person, playing board games, and seizing divine opportunities to speak about Jesus.  That sort of almost-ideal daily routine may be hard to come by in the States. But we can look hard at our own lives to ensure we are "making the most of every opportunity" to make Jesus' name known daily.

Insight: "My soul is consumed with longing for your laws at all times." (Psalm 119:20)

It is our hopes and prayers that these devotions will bring people to Jesus as Savior and have a deeper meaningful relationship with the Lord.

Meet Jesus

"He asked them, Who do the crowds say that I am? They replied, Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, one of the prophets, Who do you say I am?' Peter answered, 'The Christ of God."   Luke 9:18-20

Scripture Focus: Luke 9

For 22+ years Restoration Ministry has been intent on leading people to encounter Jesus and know Him as Lord. All aspects of the ministry have united to present Christ as the fulfillment of Old Testament promises and as the one and only true King. There seems to never be a shortage of the devil's schemes to undermine this, however.

I recall an afternoon back in 1999 when we received an atypical visitor at the Restoration Ministry’s office. My wife and I were serving on the Prayer Teem Ministry team at the time, so I was summoned to meet the young man. I extended my hand to greet him and introduced myself. He responded, "I'm Jesus Christ, the Son of God." I assured him that he was not the real Jesus. I explained why that was so, but at the time he would have none of it.

I thought of the "false messiahs and false prophets" the Gospel books warn of, and my prayer as he left was that he would have an encounter with the one and only Jesus.  Restoration Ministry will always seek to be true to the Word of God, pointing you to Jesus, who truly is, "the Christ of God."

INSIGHT: We must know who Jesus is and He must know who we are to enter the kingdom of Heaven, or find ourselves in the lake of fire at the judgment seat of Christ.

It is our hopes and prayers that these devotions will bring people to Jesus as Savior and have a deeper meaningful relationship with the Lord.

Topic: +DEV+  Language of Life

Language of Life

"Do not be misled: 'Bad company corrupts good character.'" "No one who practices deceit will dwell in my house; no one who speaks falsely will stand in my presence."   1 Corinthians 15:33

Scripture Focus: Psalm 101:7

Generally, I was not surprised when I heard soldiers I worked with using foul language. It often started with name-calling. When it occurred, it was discouraged- not only by us sergeants, but also by other officers. They cared that their environment was orderly and safe. Angry, racist language would jeopardize safety, hurting many and often leading to violence.

Several fights I knew of began with words but did not end there. We are created in God's image. Using harsh words that harm others diminishes us and denigrates the name of Jesus. The better way is to use "gentle answers" that do not "stir up anger" (Proverbs 15:1).

We can avoid those who are disrespectful lest we ourselves fall prey to incivility or aggression. We are reminded of the words of eternal life, that "every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord" (Philippians 2:11).

Surround yourself with those who want to honor Jesus. And rather than calling anyone else a hurtful name, remember that your Savior, in gentle tones and with much compassion, has called you by name.

Insight: Jesus affirms and loves us. He asks us to love each other as we love ourselves and to love Him with our whole being.

It is our hopes and prayers that these devotions will bring people to Jesus as Savior and have a deeper meaningful relationship with the Lord.

Topic: +DEV+  The Lord's Wisdom

The Lord's Wisdom

“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom; all who follow his precepts have good understanding. To him belongs eternal praise.” Psalm 111:10

Scripture Focus: 1 Kings 3:16-28

King Solomon asked for wisdom instead of asking for riches, a long life, or the death of his enemies, and the Lord was pleased. The Bible highlights a famous wise decision that Solomon made.

There were two women, both of whom claimed the same living child. Solomon listened respectfully to both stories. Then he introduced the sword. What did he mean to do? Was not the fear of the Lord to include justice, mercy, and humility (Micah 6:8), not violence? These qualities did, in fact, describe Solomon’s wisdom.

The only cutting his sword makes is to the truth. The sword of justice is not in this story to sever and kill, but to decide what is right. Through it he appealed to the compassion of the true mother.

Our human wisdom does not necessarily lead us to make right decisions. I prayed for wisdom all the while I was working in the prisons. Yet sometimes I failed. Jesus does not condemn us for making wrong decisions (John 8:1-11). His examples and laws illuminate our understanding and show us how to have His compassion and wisdom.

Insight: We do not have Jesus’ wisdom, but when we spend time with Him and follow His laws, He directs us in paths of righteousness.

It is our hopes and prayers that these devotions will bring people to Jesus as Savior and have a deeper meaningful relationship with the Lord.
